Thank you. I've felt a bit of this myself. My wife got her dream job after years of working towards it, and it happened to be on the Big Island. It's a difficult move, but I appreciate your awareness and consideration. I very much look forward to making more friends and a more community focused lifestyle.

@@boss_ftw: Hawaii county is country living, so be patient with the community. It is country living and the people are generally very friendly, generous and laid back. My wife's side has lots of family living out there. Hilo is the larger city and there is Kona. Everything else is smaller towns, but lots of ground to cover. East side is wet, West side is drier and not as wet. It's a little more expensive than Oahu but there lots to do out there that you can do. Just enjoy being closer to nature. Good luck.

Me and my partner decided about two years ago that we wanted to move to Hawaii from North Carolina... we worked really hard and did are research and we were able to pull it off and we now live in Kailua Town and we love it. The people have been wonderful where ever we have been and so welcoming.. Also this channel is something that has helped me (on so many levels) understand what we were getting ourselves into and I just want say Mahalo from the bottom of my heart!

Growing up in Kailua to adulthood, it is a community that I could appreciate living there without ever having to leave Kailua or the Windward side. Best place to raise a family and live without being overcrowded. Enjoy the Windward side. Watch sunrise from the Beaches or take the drive back to Kailua early in the morning and see the bustling traffic town bound and enjoy the panoramic view from the Pali, Wilson Tunnels or H3, and you'll know what I mean. Blues sky, Blue water, waves, lush green mountains and you know what I mean. Try appreciating the smell of fresh lush green ginger plants along the old Pali Road/Look out or around Nuuanu reservoir and you'll appreciate it.

DONT CHANGE HAWAII, LET HAWAII CHANGE YOU! Respect the locals, the traditions, the aina, the lifted Tacoma’s! Ask for permission, no just do whatever you like. No ack like one clown, cause I guarantee you one braddah or sistah would put you in check (we have no filter when it comes to disrespect) When driving, SLOW DOWN this ain’t the mainland. Pick up your opala, if you packed it in, pack it out, Hawaii is not your trash can ( I go fishing at my usual spots and see some tourists getting all buss 🍺 on the beach, and see they just leave their cans on the sand, like c’mon, you no mo common sense?; like me wipe your ass while I pick up after you too?) And please, don’t try doing some dumb shit for your tik tok like trying to take a dump in the queens palace. Big mahalos. I really really needed to hear this. I transferred here 7 months ago to be closer to ohana, so that is main reason. But of course I love the culture and weather and food. I was raised in Tokyo so this is the only state in America that I feel “at home”. I respect the history, the ‘āina, the culture, the people, and have deep love for nature and marine life. Yes it is very expensive but to me, it is worth it to be near ohana as I finally got to spend my first Thanksgiving with them in my adult life and I am over 50 years old.

@@movingtohawaii yes. I went to Seiden International and Nishimachi International schools. Absolutely feel at home. I lived in Texas all of my adult life except for a few years in Georgia and Tennessee and though I assimilated, I never felt “at home in my soul”. I went out of my way to find oriental markets and would feel a sense of comfort in them and the food but my surroundings never felt right. I have been visiting Kaua’i for over 50 years, whether on vacation with parents (we would go to Guam or Saipan or Hawaii a lot) or visiting my sister for past 30 years she has been on Kaua’i. So yes I may be the most haole looking haole but I am grateful to be here and I am serving my country as a federal government nurse and I am not rich by any means so I am not out here buying up properties and land. I am just here trying to make a living and flying to neighbor island to spend time with my ohana because life is short. I felt at home day one here and nothing here was a culture shock. The only thing I don’t “get” is the 9th island infatuation and “staycations” lol. Much alohas to you Derek.

My partner is being relocated to O’ahu Hawaii for his job, I am coming with him. We already came for a week visit before the move and are super excited about the warmth, the vibes, the beauty and culture. We are coming from Tacoma, WA, and looking forward to getting more sun and heat in our lives. We are both kind, thoughtful, laidback people and think this transition will take some work, but ultimately provide us with opportunities to grow. I am one of those people that is worried about being an outsider, or unwelcome. I am pale white, and I burn easily, so I’m going to stick out. I’ve already left my job here as a massage therapist and look forward to a break from massage for a while, while we get established, before getting my certification in HI. We have an apartment in Aiea and get the keys Dec 10th. I am going to look for opportunities to volunteer in my community and try to get to know people while helping. I am a bit nervous, this is a huge change for us, but ultimately appreciate your videos and perspectives. It would be really cool to meet you sometime when we get down there.

Great desserts too. Second floor is Roast Duck Kitchen in front of the escalator. Hard to beat the Chinese Roast Duck. Plenty of shopping areas and a great jumping point to the West side, North Shore, Windward side and to downtown. As always, you gave an excellent presentation on the topic. I will just like to add to what you have stated, moving to Hawaii is not necessarily a bad thing as long as one has a good long term plan, and has the assurance of a job security. It also helps if you have a family on the Island, because I have seen people getting depressed after not being able to afford to go see their family members on the mainland. Additionally, moving to Hawaii is a change in lifestyle, if one embraces this change, they will thrive and will be happy. Housing affordability is a big topic and I do recall that you touched upon this topic in one of your videos about how tough it is to be a teacher in Hawaii (from affordability point of view)The food prices in Hawaii are significantly higher as well. At the end of the day, it’s an Island lifestyle, offers good things but with certain caveats.
@HelloFromHawaii
@HelloFromHawaii 2 года назад
Mahalo! Housing seems to be the biggest issue here. It keeps coming up. I wonder what would happen if Hawaii solved its housing problem.
@kouheimassey
@kouheimassey 2 года назад
There's a lot of reasons people don't want/are afraid of people moving to hawaii. I think it's that a lot of homeless people in hawaii are people who moved from the mainland and didn't anticipate the costs. Also, that a there's a lot of rude tourists, and people don't want rude people moving in, people who didn't grow up with the whole aloha spirit thing. The whole mixing pot of cultures in hawaii is great, but I think there's a fear of Hawaii changing too much. Like how you used to be able to see Diamond head from far away, but now it's blocked by all the tall hotels. It's scary seeing hawaii being changed, like zuckerberg buying 600 acres of land. With the whole housing supply being low...it's hard to really recommend people to move to hawaii, when we can't even help our homeless. I guess it's the idea of 'reserving' housing for people already here, instead of worsening the supply:demand ratio of housing. I like the third point. Financial literacy sucked in highschool, even in mililani high. Not a lot of people knew how they were going to be able to make ends meet if they were to stay in hawaii, especially after seeing their parents struggle (and even worse with covid).

Oh man…I completely disagree on almost everything you said here. You’ve heard all the arguments, so I won’t rehash them, but claiming that people who are moving here have nothing to do with the cost of living increase for locals and the subsequent difficulty and impossibility of staying in their home, is choosing ignorance. They’re not being blamed because locals just “need someone to blame”, they’re being blamed because it’s the truth. Walmart destroys small mom and pop shops, amazon destroys brick and mortar shops, similiar argument. They didn’t succeed at taking out the local business because one person shopped there. They succeeded because many people shopped there. Surely you understand that it’s not just a few people moving here, it’s many. And the correlation is obvious but also scientific, they’ve done the numbers. Yes, the local US govt had a hand in it, as well as foreign and mainland businesses, and some locals own multiple properties, but the vast majority own nothing. After literally building the community that all these people love, locals struggle just to stay in this community. And it’s happening all over the world. So, are we now blaming the locals for losing their homes? Sorry native hawaiian, you can’t live in Hawaii anymore? Sorry native venetian, you can’t live in Venice anymore? Sorry, brooklyn native, you can’t live in brooklyn anymore? Why? Because others want it now. I travel everywhere and see it all the time. BTW, localism/tribalism is not unique to Hawaii and is not something to be ashamed about. As I’m from here, and like I mentioned, travelled all over the world, I have been “other or outsider” quite often which is fine. I don’t mind other peoples’ defensive, protective nature over their homes. And, I highly doubt the majority of people who move here even care about the impact they have on the local population or the environment, and even if they do care, they still end up doing what they want.
@HelloFromHawaii

Your kindness and perspective is reassuring. I am a white mainlander moved to Hilo 2 years ago, without knowing anyone here. The couple local people I have actually gotten to know have been so kind and accepting even though I'm an outsider. It means so much to me to have those relationships, and really helps me feel more comfortable. Whenever I am just walking down the street though, or in the stores, the distain for my presence is palpable. I guess It's a good experience to be an unwelcome minority for some period of time in ones life. I think probably it's like this in many places in the world where outsiders are seen as such. It has also been interesting to see though how local people treat me differently when I'm wearing my scrubs vs when I'm wearing my regular clothes. I do love my job here and I'm glad I get to give back to the community in a healthcare setting, but yes- the cultural differences and the general feeling of isolation that is coming with it is the thing that is making me think maybe it was a mistake to move here.

There is a person on social media that gives people advice on moving to Hawaii. That person and I converesed via email. This person is not a local in Hawaii. This person is what I call a mainland transplant. When I mentioned that retirees are good for Hawaii because many have money to spend in restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, tourist destinations but that they generally keep their mainland doctors and Tavel back and forth from Hawaii for healthcare so they are not a burden on Hawaii's healthcare system that this makes Senior Citizens good citizens for Hawaii. Senior meaning 55+. This transplant totally disagreed with me. This person did not feel 55+ was good for Hawaii. Needless to say, I did not seek moving to Hawaii advice from this person. If a person wants to move to Hawaii that means they love the islands, they love the culture, they want to keep Hawaii beautiful. Most people who move to Hawaii want to keep Hawaii the way it is, the way locals want it to be. Most transplants do not want to spoil Hawaii, they want to experience what the locals already have. We want to experience what paradise is. We do not want to ruin Hawaii. I still have not moved to Hawaii. It is a dream for me. It may be a dream that I take to the grave with me. It's a sweet dream.
@tracyalan7201
@tracyalan7201 2 года назад
Good luck on the dream. It can be expensive for cost of living and medical, both go up if moving to the outer islands. Most of the major medical specialists are on Oahu, so if complications occur, travel from the other islands would have to be factored in. Costs for living goes a little higher, while everything to the other islands generally gets a little further, so plan ahead on location. I have relatives on Kauai, Maui and Hawaii counties and all have pros and cons. Lanai and Molokai have their own charm but are travel to/from can be more complicated. I think the more you learn via the internet and when opportunity arises to visit and experience it, the more you can decide whether or not the dream is something to want to spend more time on.

I think in the past outside interests had a lesser impact on home prices but now people are migrating from cities to areas in the country where they can work from home. Low interest rates just added fuel to the fire. Therefore we witnessed an increase in home prices across the nation but the impact is more dramatic in desirable places to live like Hawaii. A realtor friend said that since Covid, cash deals for homes sight unseen are not uncommon. We all witnessed home prices soar in Hawaii the past couple years and I think it's probably a combination of locals trying to get into a home competing with mainland money coupled with short supply. I like your hypothetical senario if homes in Hawaii were only available for residents to buy, it wouldn't work for reasons you mentioned. It has to be free market. Hawaii residents need to make more money so they can compete with outside money. The government has always been talking about diversifying our economy since I was in high school and I'm surprised that after retuning to Hawaii 40 years later, they are still talking about it.

I fell in love immediately, because of the people, the culture and especially the energy you feel there. It is such a special wonderful place. I tried back then to work there as a dentist but that didn’t work out. Now I dream of retiring in Hawaii. But when I hear everything about the homeless people, native Hawaiians that cannot even get a house and there comes me that buys a house away from them. We won’t have tonns of money but still can buy a house. I do feel bad about that. You are totally right I think. The biggest problem is the rich people/companies that are buying away/expensive building all the housing. Same is happening in my country. It is impossible for younger people to buy nowadays. But stil…. I’ve been dreaming my whole life and would love to be part of a community in Hawaii in a few years. We were wondering if the unwelcoming sentiment from some local Hawaiian residents were widespread, so thank you for helping to shed light on this subject. Born and raised in Hawaii. Moved to mainland for school and work. When I thought about moving back to Hawaii in the 90s, my friends in Hawaii thought I was crazy. Even back then, Hawaii was not what I grew up with. After investigating the pay scale, cost of living and cultural shifts. I decided it was better to visit Hawaii than live there.

I loved this video -as I was intending for 10 years to get enough money to make our move with my wife to Hawaii and I was feeling some genuine guilt for what the US did to this sovereign country with our military and large corporations - disgraceful. And if my own moving to Hawaii and buying a beautiful home contributed to difficulty for my Hawaiian cousins I would feel genuine shame and sadness for it. Thank you for your words of sincere respect and kindness and aloha to all. those already there and those who would love to live in such beauty and contribute to the good of all if possible and allowed, TY!

Hawaiians have very similar mentalities to certain states on the mainland. If we just put aside our differences and learned to understand one another, we'd find that we have lots in common to share with one another, and that's another step we can take to unify everyone under the same umbrella.

Nothing to feel guilty about on your behalf, you are just being honest, this is the reason for the high success of your channel, plus me and my wife and are not going back just like that, this time we have a back up plan, the 1st time was like one hell drill , now we have a good idea what to do , no more 12 luggages , just the carry ons, But, summarizing everything , taking in consideration that when were there was right in the middle of the pandemic, things were tight, I dd enjoy having Magic Island all for ourselves whenever we were there. But, all in all, I kinda got the feeling that we were in Acapulco, Mexico , rather than in Hawaii, USA, when Hawaiian natives have found a better place to live in Vegas or Florida, that's a reading between the lines, because of the much to be desire situation of the homeless, not to mention that the so called agencies that are suppose to help seem to really don't care for the people, . As i mentioned before, besides wanting to go into real estate, I also want to go into politics, I have great ideas of how to diminish 1;- the homeless situation. Yes, there will still be homeless people, but not for the reasons there are now greedy land owners and 2;- how to return to the money making tourism of the 60's, most of the greedy millionaire landowners will not go for it, for starters, If I had the power as a politician, I would implement Rent control laws, and eliminate this cock & bull story that, if a land lord wants to evict a tenant, all he has to do is put an add in the newspaper, and the tenant is out, without his due process of law. Yeah, if the tenant has fallen behind, then it has to happen, however, in most states , a guy who has a mortgage, does not have the right to redeem his property after the foreclosure sale, even if he's able to pay what he owes, I would change this, That's just the beginning , I will also work in getting the ridiculous hotel fees down as they were in the 60's, that would attract more tourists, that weren't able to afford coming to Hawaii,, and in the end, the money made by tourism will double, but as I mentioned, I know a lot of real estate heavies will laugh at this idea. And 3, I have a good plan how Hawaii would get their sovereignty back and the USA will keep their military outfits on the islands. But, believe me, there's a black day, black as hell coming to the real estate world in Hawaii, maybe not this year, next , maybe not in 20 years, however, the living prices have gotten so ridiculous, there's going to be a day no one can afford to take a vacation in Hawaii. As they say; " You can't burn a candle on both ends too long ".Mahalo for reading my comment.

Thank you for this.....because we have been feeling bad about wanting to move to Hawaii. This has been something that we have wanted to do for many years, after we retire. We have been going to the Islands for close to 30 years but with our last trip we felt (for the first time) a local resistance. And, for the first time Kauai (where we have many friends who have lived there for many years) became my least favorite Island. Our twin daughters make us feel bad about gentrification, but I explain to them ....that is exactly what happened to our town on our beach in California. And, that it is everywhere...in every State. And, many people in these other states are pissed as well because people are moving in and around taking "their housing". I would be bummed too. But, like I said, "It's everywhere". I think that the people of each state should think very hard on who they vote in as their representatives , I mean who they choose to put in office. Their representatives should be there to help them and to protect them. The people need to fight for what they want. The gentrification thing is not going away. There just has to be a way for the representatives to help their local people. I don't know how that works but that is why our representatives get paid the big bucks :)

I still dream of living there. The aloha vibe, the cultural diversity, the atmosphere, the love. One of these days. Beautiful islands, beautiful people. I once read something about the theory that the original settlers of the Hawaiian Islands arrived closer to 2000 years ago. Then, approximately 1000 years ago, Tahitians arrived and began to overtake the original inhabitants, who were supposedly a different ethnicity of Polynesian. I believe it said that's where the term 'Menehune' came from. It was a reference to the prior Polynesian inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands, and I think it suggested it was a derogatory term. None of this is fact, but theoretical, yet quite possibly true. Which, could be fascinating that the current Hawaiian culture oppressed the original inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands. Maybe this theory won't be well received, and that makes sense. It doesn't diminish the fact that the original Hawaiian government that was a recognized sovereign nation was overtaken and subjugated by the U.S., which was still a terrible injustice. But, it is fascinating, human nature.
@charlietaylor799
@charlietaylor799 2 года назад
Yeah it's an interesting theory. Supposedly the Menehune got pushed further and further away by the Tahitians (moving from Big Island westward) until the last ones were on Kauai and even out to the NWHI. I read once that in a census taken in the late 1800s, they recorded a group of about 60 people in Kauai who identified themselves as Menehune. Very interesting

You are 1000% accurate and despite people hoarding properties (locals/mainlanders), the world is changing so that affects everyone, everywhere! I am originally from Jamaica and currently surviving in Hawaii by way of New York but there are times I become selfish in my thought process as to why "people" keep coming here. However, there is good and bad in everything so some may romanticize the branding of Hawaii then upon getting here realize that you have to work, which changes their outlook. I'd love and appreciate it if you could expound more on this topic by tapping into (work-trade) because that has also contributed to both sides of the experience! Overall, we are all world citizens and should be able to RESPECTFULLY travel around without abusing each other, while finding our footing among ideal connections between destinations. "Wah gwan 🤙..

I used the BUS for transportation and enjoy ed unlimited free entertainment and food. However it is no place especially now to try to raise a family. The key to me living in Hawaii was no need for cash or expenses. Didn't make much income but didn't need it. To raise a family everything costs alot and wages don't compete with the mainland. 💖 I live "born & raised" on the mainland (East Coast), and I sincerely enjoy Hawaii, but I've noticed that there's a big emphasis on "local-ism". I'm in one of the major cities in Virginia, but I/we do not continually base every single thing on being from "Virginia". - seriously, who cares?? I think because Hawaii is remote, and has had such a horrible PAST, there's a resentment towards outsiders - I definelty get it ! and being "local"", may be the only thing some may feel as though they have left?? but it also seem like there's a lack of maturity, about what's really important over there?? Education, Housing (for locals), Health care etc.etc. are so much needed, and perhaps should be more concentrated on besides - who's a "local". And those visiting or moving to Hawaii should be more respectful to the land and people of Hawaii (and leave the arrogance & ignorance) at home!! On one hand, the locals don't appreciate "outsiders", but on the other hand, they're needed - physicians, attorneys, journalist, military!! etc.etc You're trying to have it both ways.😐 Thanks for your videos*.

Get choke kamaʻaina blame the tourism industry for high cost of living.While I agree w/ auntie Haunani in saying the tourism industry is a pimp and they made Hawaiian culture the prostitute, my question is, would hawaii be as modern as it is w/o tourism and investors moving in? And I also hear choke people saying the tourism industry should be replaced w/ industries like agriculture so we can grow our own food and even grow hemp, but iʻd like to ask how many people in the hospitality & tourism industry if we make that transition cuz im no mahiʻai but i donʻt think it takes 100 people to run 1 compound harvester,plus we gotta import materials to make tractors & machines also driving prices up. And if we see agriculture as an alternative,weʻre an island w/ limited space and rising sea and groundwater levels, plus if we switch, you donʻt think another Sandford Dole or wealthy investor will come in and dominate that industry screwing over kanaka maoli & kamaʻaina.

If you are going to complain, the people of Hawaii really don't want to hear it. They also complained in the 80s and 90s about the Japanese buying all the property, then in the 00s it was the Chinese, now it's the corporate people buying the properties. It's always going to be someone buying the land, but that's why HHL is supposed to be giving away the land to the Hawaiians.

Listen to yourself! You say "spend time thinking of ways to make Hawaii a better place" followed by "not coming here and changing things around". It is required to change things to make it a better place, otherwise it will be just the same! But then, you're changing things! DISRESPECTING US!! You can't have it both ways. What some Hawaiians have is hatred for any outsider, and admit it: you know this to be true. It is for a large number of Hawaiians. When Hawaiians return to Aloha, when they accept that outsiders want to improve Hawaii, with positive intent, positive change for all, then things will get better for all. Not before.

E kala mai iaʻu & Mahalo nui for your comment. Native Hawaiians have never benefited anything good from visitors. When visitors came, they always took & never gave anything back. Visitors would gaslight & say that they were doing us a favor or the most current discourse is that they're "stimulating our economy", even demanding Aloha because that's "being hawaiian". Natives have always been at the losing end when it comes to outsiders. Lands lost, culture & language exploited. Natives are facing an overall erasure but it's easy to say that "Hawai'i is a paradise" when non-natives are not living oppressed on their own sacred lands. Outsiders do not want to make Hawai'i a better place, Natives do, because they have that sacred connection & MANA to their 'āina. Hawai'i is their Moku'au'hau. @@alexaanneisaacs I love your comment. You explain my point better than I ever could have. Outsiders have not benefitted Hawaiian natives, upon arrival by Cook through the theft of the nation. It was total theft and there should be reparations, plain and simple. Then the real estate grab by outsiders sealed the deal, to the detriment of Hawaiians. When I meet loving, wonderful Hawaiians it is like meeting brothers and sisters, the best. Unfortunately, the wounds of the past cause some Hawaiians to be hostile to anyone who is not Hawaiian. Many outsiders truly would like to make Hawai'i a better place, but do not know how. Your suggestions would be appreciated. But that means change from what now exists, which was my objection to the OP's comment. He calls for improvements without change, which cannot happen. Sending Aloha and eager to hear your solutions.
