Have you tried foam filling your decoys?
@keatontimmonsyt
@keatontimmonsyt 3 года назад
I tried the other day and failed miserably had already drilled holes in mine so I really didn’t want to use them anymore luckily they were just some ole cheap ones and ones I wanted to get rid of anyways but I wish this would have been out a week ago

I have some cheap decoys that it might be worth to foam fill but alot of the land I duck hunt is beaver ponds on public land so it's usually a good hike in so I don't know if I want to add anny more weight

I have foam filled some cheap decoys it worked great. At least there still floating main thing I had to learn was not to overfill them. I used the great stuff.

Do it for divers, some guys kill em over just foam buoy

Yes I’ve done it. 2 tips . Drill 2 holes , 1 under tail feathers and 1 where the neck meets the body . This will keep you from overfilling and exploding the decoy . 2nd use waterfall spray foam” stuff they use when building koi pond waterfalls “.

When I was in high school, my shop teacher had an aluminum duck and goose decoy molds. He poured a specified amount of styrofoam-forming beads in and heated the molds until the styrofoam reacted and expanded to fill the molds. As I remember there was a little trimming needed, but the results were very impressive. Once painted, they looked awesome.

I got a good buddy named Drew C. that loves to shoot my decoys. All the ones he shoots, I fill with the can foam. When it's expanded and cured, I lop off the extra and seal 'em with silicon or some two part epoxy. My duck hunting buddies are the reason why I buy lifetime decoys now.

Did to several diver decoys and some old mallards. Used Great Stuff Foam. Made a mess, but leaks no more! They will be heavy once done.

I had big reservations about using the spray foam to fill decoys. I always wondered about them getting water logged. Thanks for the explanation 👍

Just did it the other night to some canvas backs decoys. It’s a must for diver hunting. Most of my spread is foam filled from the factory. Make sure the can says closed cell

I did a few about 20 years ago. A few came out okay, but split a few in the process. I just stick with repair or buy new ones now.

I have both foamed and regular decoys. I get the unsinkable idea but foam filled decoys weigh more and since they are heavy, they move less in the wind so they are less effective.
@randym7961
@randym7961 3 года назад
Thanks for the info,,, my decoys will remain foam free as the expense and time involved in filling them with foam makes replacing shot decoys more cost effective .

I had some crap final approach decoys that would break very easily and I figured I had nothing to loose so I took a broken one and drilled some holes in the bottom and sprayed in some great stuff expansion foam and it split the decoy open all along the bottom. I cut the decoy open and found that it didn’t expand all the way up and in filling the body cavity. Did a little research and started reading that the foam would just absorb water so I scrapped the idea (I didn’t really like the decoys anyways so I got rid of them in the end)

Great stuff makes a watertight spray foam called Pond & Stone it is advertised as closed cell foam. Just throwing that out there. Not sure if it was adound at the time this vid was made. Havent checked any prices to see how compares to 2 part marine foam.

Made them heavy a ride odd it’s bin a real fight for a season again this year in Oz bag was 2 ducks and a short season only 20 days instead of 87 we got the bag up to 5 but still 20 day season with a Wednesday start

It can work, but you have to make sure you get the decoy completely full and seal the holes with JB weld or something similar. The only time I will ever foam fill a decoy is if it already leaks

I know you've done a video but I can't seem to find it, what size boss shotshells do you shot at decoying ducks? And also geese. Thanks

I like 2 3/4 number 5 for ducks. 6s are also good too over decoys. I also have shot many 5s for speckle belly geese as well as 4s. Hope this helps!

Man if I didn't know better Lab Coat Guy could be your twin brother. LOL... Not sure how you filmed that without busting up laughing a thousand times in the process. Very clever clip though. The video did provide good information. I appreciate the cost analysis portion. You helped me make a decision to foam or not to foam. Can I send a question to your email? If I remember right it is something like Mr. Producerguy.

Just a thought.... Could you paint or caulk the hole that you insert the foam in so that it is water tight?
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 2 года назад
I think that 3M 4000 or 5200 would be the thing to use. Then paint it.

use the foam for widows and cracks, the other stuff will blow out the decoy. Have foamed many to save them after someone shot them.

I just spend the money on good decoys as i learned early on good decoys produce more successful hunts .. but it is good to know the foam isnt water proof 🤙

I was thinking more about deadening the sound of the decoys while carrying them then floating. That being said, that weight gain is something I did not consider and it is too much for me to be ok with. Thank you for this video. Something else one can do that will literally last forever, is plastic welding. Alot of the plastic decoys are HD-Polyethylene which is an excellent Thermoplastic for welding. They also have commercially available UV resistant HDPE welding rod so the decoy repairs will last as long if not longer than the decoys.

Yeah... I tried the spray foam in some old inflatable decoys that I got for free. They didn't fill the decoy completely or evenly and are really ugly now.

I actually made that point in the video... But there are some people who are interested in repairing or improving decoys they already own- which is the reason for the video.

You should use a table on screen to describe your results. This is typical for many of your videos. New floating duck decoys cost ~$10-20 per decoy. The closed cell marine foam costs
