We have goats because we don't have the space for a cow. Our one alpine doe gives us a gallon of milk every day. We have had pretty goaty tasting milk and that isn't fun, but the quality of your goat makes a HUGE difference. We had poorly bred does in the past and they are the ones with the not so good milk. Our new doe is from top milk lines and her milk tastes no different from cow milk. Goats are also great because when trained properly you can take them camping with you. We took our goats backpacking, had fresh milk, and even made cheese while up in the high mountains.

We got a cream separator for our goat milk and it’s been a game changer! Making butter and ice cream along side everything we do with goats milk is amazing. I would love a dairy cow but absolutely adore my goats. They are like dogs in our family(but can be frustrating sometimes too of course)

I have a cream separator too, worth the investment if you have dairy goats. Mine is an antique from when my Grandmother was young, still works perfect.

We actually do dairy sheep because my stomach can't handle the milk protein and/or casein in goat and cow milk. So many choices for dairy animals and it's so unique to each farm. Love you guys! Look forward to your videos.

I had read that sheep only have a 5 month lactation period. Is there any truth to that? Just curious how long one can reasonably expect to get milk from a sheep each year

@@evj1326 if you buy a dairy sheep, it can be much longer. We have a dairy breed and they could go 8-10 months. All depends on genetics

When you can't choose, get both! We have 2 milk cows, but got given a dairy goat. Now we have 2 of each. The cream is why I love cows milk the best though!

I have Nigerian Dwarfs an get anywhere from a quart to a quart and a half from each one. I researched the amounts given by each breed and didn't want to deal with gallons and gallons. I bought a cream separator, works great. I grew up with fresh raw cows milk and raw goats milk. Was an easy choice to choose goats over cows for our milk.

I wish I had more cream than what I do from my goats. However I have an intolerance to cows milk and I don’t find the same problem with goats milk so I kind of had to go with goat. I get worse problems with sheep oddly enough. So goat it is for me. Just means I need to overcome some challenges. If you don’t want goaty milk than get it cold fast. Also stay away from oberhasi and toggenburg, they have very pungent milk even if you get it cold fast. Alpine can also have stronger milk. I’d recommend Nigerian dwarf, La Mancha, or Nubian, in that order. Nigerian dwarf is the creamiest then La Mancha which makes it sweeter. Another thing, if you want less goaty milk keep them away from bucks. Finally I find that Alfalfa makes for goatier milk, at least with my girls. So I give them good quality grain and a high protein timothy or orchard grass hay

Oberhasli is actually known for tasting like cow's milk which is one reason we breed them. I've also owned Nigerian and Alpine, and they've all tasted similar. It really depends on raising/living conditions, health, and diet as well as chilling the milk asap. We've also never had an issue with bucks rut smell.

Never noticed goaty milk in our Nubian and she was 100% on alfalfa plus pellets. Added BOSS n grain and got lots o milk. Just a knucklehead of a Nubian which is why we are getting out of them.

Great video! Grew up on a small dairy producing and selling Grade A raw milk and it was awesome! We had about 40 head that we milked twice a day. Also enjoyed goat milk when we had it which was not often but occasionally. I can echo that it was nice having all the milk and cream we wanted. Challenge is it's a 24/7 responsibility - a lot of work and yes...cows can be hard on fences too!

The fat in goat milk is generally recognized as being better for humans. I use it for making kefir without any problems. It's important to get it up to temperature quickly without overheating. I do this by heating several gallons of water in a brew kettle to approximately 109F and then submerging a one gallon bottle of the milk and kefir grains (open and filled about one inch from the top). Keeping it submerged at this temperature, it only takes 8 hours to make a gallon.

I have Sannen, Boar, Nigerian Dwarf goats, and milk cows that are half Jersey. In a nutshell, everyone is fed alfalfa and pasture. Lots of water, and grain while milking. No one can tell the difference in the milk but cheese is another matter. Hard aged cheese tends to have tbe goats influence not bad from my girls but I use the milk for soft non aged cheese like cream cheese, mozzella, and mascapone. I do have a cream separator. My Sannens and Sannen Boar cross milkers produce a gallon or more daily of wonderful milk. The Sannen ND provides hald a gallon but it has twice the cream content of the Sannens. The whey I feed the pigs, and soak the grain for my chickens in.

You explained that well. Ive had both cows and goats over the years. I like them both for all the things you mentioned. Now that I am in my 70's and don't need much milk I have mini Nubians because they have a good amount of butterfat and produce less than other breeds like lamancha's and saanens, and are also a nice size for handling since the Nigerians are to short and the large breeds to strong for me now. I sold the cows a few years ago because I couldn't pull calves during a hard birth anymore. So Age and other issues dealing with ability are a consideration too. I have had folks come over and couldn't tell my goat milk from cow, they all say it tastes wonderful.

A well bred, well build dairy goat is all we need. We are getting out of Nubians (too noisy) and into LaManchas. I prefer those well bred goats though I just use AOB when it comes to breeding. Kids are usually eaten around here and many are not picky. But what comes out of that udder-BIG importance. We only feed alfalfa, grain up n add some goodies for maximum milk production that also keeps the doe in good condition while in milk. If we had a choice of dairy cow, I would totally get a Guernsey cow. I love the idea of that yellow milk for butter n cream goodness!

In my youth I used to keep and breed British Toggenburgs. As far as the milk goes the Fat Molecule size of a goat is about 5 times smaller than the cow and so having a much greater surface area it is much more digestible and can be tolerated by people that are Lactose Intolerant. After kidding out, more likely to be twins than a singleton and I was getting about 4 to 8 pints a day. A goat will give its own weight in milk every 8 to 10 days. They can be fussy feeders preferring to reach up, cleaner fodder, rather than eat from the ground. For fencing it is like trying to keep a heard of antelope, so electric or a six foot fence. A book I used as a reference is Goat Husbandry by David Mackenzie. I am sure if anybody in the US gets it they will be able to modify the British Aspects to US use. I found that the taste of the milk was dependent on the diet. One goat had odd tasting milk and this was the result of eating a particular weed, avoid the weed avoid the odd taste. In the UK we add milk to tea/coffee and the flavor is much better with goats milk, going back to cows milk was like drinking soup.

I really love and prefer fresh goat milk. But id have said goat milk was nasty if you'd asked me back when id only had store bought milk. I don't know what causes it but every brand of store bought goat milk ive ever had has been disgusting. Id hear ppl say that goats milk tastes pretty similar to cows milk and id think they were crazy. But then I discovered a local dairy goat farm and fell in love with goats milk.

This gives me hope. My daughter is lactose intolerant. I had been wanting a dairy cow, and was thinking about saving up for one, but I'd hate for not the whole family to be able to benefit from it. On the other hand I HATE the goat milk I've had before. It is just so yucky tasting. I have heard that sheep milk tastes more like cow milk and that it can also have the effect of not causing the tummy problems for people who are sensitive to cow's milk, so I've also been considering that. But maybe I just need to find someone locally who does dairy goats and see what I think before I make any hard decisions.

Our goat milk taste just like the processed cow milk you buy in the store....you can't tell the difference.You have to keep the goat away from weeds and after you milk, get it into the frig right away.I let everyone that comes over here to visit drink goat milk and they all say the same thing..."your kidding...wow...I never knew it taste just like store bought milk...yum", LOL.

For most the goats are more economical on feed and hay. What goats have you had? My goats would give almost 1/2gal of cream. And made excellent yogurt and creme fraiche. And I never had any milk taste goaty. Though they were Nubian. I have spoken with others and international goat day at TX A&M, I forget the campus but it is reported that the "Alpine" breeds Do produce flavored milk. That's why they are also known as the cheese goats.

You didn’t mention space needs for both. I’d love to have a dairy cow but we don’t have much pasture. We have less than a quarter acre of pasture but we have 16 acres of woods with lots of shrubs and brush that goats love to eat. I can rotate them through the woods unlike a cow that needs more wide open space than a goat.

I don't have personal experience with mini cows but really want one and have done a bit of research. My conclusions have been that a mini dairy cow is great for a small family as they produce less milk than a full size cow. They can cost a bit more (where I live) because they're considered a boutique breed. But if you can afford the cost up front, they require less space to graze and less food. My dream and goal is own one or two mini dairy cows one day!

I grew up in Northeast Texas on a homestead/farm. We had two dairy cows until I was 14 years old. One was a old Holstein and the other was a Jersey. Then Holstein passed away and not long after that my grandmother sold the Jersey. Goodbye fresh milk. We also had some goats, but they were mostly used to keep the grass and brush under control and make fertilizer for the garden. The point I'm getting to is this: I've always drank cow's milk, but now that I'm getting older (55) it's getting more difficult for my system to process dairy properly. I've heard that goat's milk is easier to digest and is healthier for humans than cow's milk. Is this true?

The fact that the cream is naturally incorporated with the milk in goat milk can make it easier to digest, but I've also heard that as long as you're drinking a quality raw cow's milk and giving it a good shake before drinking, it should digest about the same. Not entirely sure how true that is though. Goat's milk does have different nutrition to offer than cow's milk, as it is higher in minerals like magnesium and folate, but cow's milk is higher in vitamins such as B12 and D3. So really, they both have their benefits! In your case though, it may be worth trying out goat's milk to see if your body has an easier time digesting it, or at least finding a good quality raw cow's milk.

I'm kinda bummed because the goat fits us more since we don't have kids to also drink the milk, but I really want cows milk for the cream. We don't usually go through more than a gallon in one week. Gallons each day would be overwhelming. 😳 May have to find a neighbor and do some trading.😏

It doesn't take long for a good dairy goat's cream to rise. If it is only you or two people, a day or two and you should see a creamline. Our doe produced a quarter inch in a day-by end of week, it was almost three inches. Nom! Too bad she was a brat on the stand. Do NOT like naughty goats. Her daughter will probably be that way but is more food motivated.

We have a cream separator for our goat milk. Well worth the investment. Our alpine doe gives us 1 gallon a day. What we don't drink gets made into cheese or sent through the separator to become all sorts of wonderful delights. :)

You said you milk the goats "most of the days." Sooo.....they aren't milked everyday? You also said you get "about a couple cups of goat milk per milking." Do you get a couple cups per goat per day or a couple cups every couple days per goat?

I'm a long-time dairy goat owner with Nigerian Dwarf goats. A goat needs to be milked on a regular schedule, much like cows. My best goats give a quart, milking once a day. Sometimes a first-time mama (first freshener) will give only a pint as she hasn't built up an udder yet. I prefer once a day milking as it fits my schedule better than 2x each day. Hope that info helps!

Goats can be picky if you are feeding hay but if they won't eat it, it isTainted in some way. Cows aren't as discerning as goats can be. Goats, like deer are browsers, so watch your shrubs, fruit trees, and THE garden.

I had goats for yrs and I have traded goats for cows.... literally. I have 2 cows because I traded them for goats. After my last trade I found out I was sensitive to goats milk. Who is sensitive to goats milk? Really? Anyway the butter is my main reason and I dare make cheese with cows milk because it never tastes goaty.... for us too. Cows all the way.

@@leviahimsa lol. So it’s safe to assume you use a smart phone, tablet, and/or laptop that didn’t require mining to produce. Or do you only care about animals and not the overall environment? If that’s the case, I hope your cell phone service doesn’t rely on a tower built somewhere that destroyed animal habitat. I also hope you don’t consume ANY vegetables that have been produced with any modern farm implements. If so, the blood of lots of small animals is on your hands. Should we discuss the amount of habitat loss due to modern roads, interstates , etc? Or do you not partake in modern transportation either?

Cow's milk is for baby cows, goat's milk is for baby goats... a calf grows how much, and gains how many pounds from mom's milk? Humans don't need that.. "but we've always done this..."
