Should you get a Suica?
What's the difference between a Suica and a Pasmo?
Is a Suica the same as a JR Pass?
Is the JR Pass worth it?
If you don't feel like watching and you want the answers to the above quick, Suicas and Pasmo are two of many IC cards that are accepted universally throughout Japan. Get one because it'll make your life easier. Get a JR Pass if you're traveling a lot across the country.
JR Rail Pass Calculator - www.japan-guide.com/railpass/
*All I did was google "JR Pass calculator" and take no responsibility over its accuracy or the results you get from heeding its advice.
Day trip passes, Metro passes, and specialty trains (romance, green, etc.) are not included in the above.

Update: Pasmo released an app for a mobile version similar to Suica. However, I have a Huawei Mate 10 Pro and because my phone doesn't support the 「おサイフケータイ」I can't use it. Here's the link: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilepasmo.android

Thanks so much, very helpful! Now that things may actually be opening up, I am holding a JAL ticket in my hot little hands and cannot wait to finally visit Japan next year! I am watching every video like this that I can find (and been studying Japanese for a while, for the fun of it). Let's hope the madness ends and I'll actually be able to go! I'll buy you a beer if I run into you for your great advice! 😆

It works with Google Pay as well. www.blog.google/products/google-pay/add-suica-and-waon-google-pay-japan/ The caveat is that it only works with certain android devices. I have a Huawei device and as far as I'm aware, it doesn't work with it.

Linking to the Apple wallet is super convenient. I can reload credit as I walk towards the gate or while on the train itself. However, I’m not sure if it’s possible to migrate my card and credit should I move to an Android phone.

@@wrblue08 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Suica and Pasmo both have android apps now but they only support certain devices, so you'd have to confirm that. My Huawei Mate 10 Pro is not supported for anything NFC in Japan unfortunately. I bought this device in Japan too

We have a similar system in Hong Kong called the Octopus card. It works the same way it allows to use the subway, bus, as well as restaurants, convenience stores, vending machines, honestly i dont have to worry about anything else other to recharge it once in a while.

Hello. We are planning a trip from Osaka-Kyoto-Takayama-Tokyo. Since, it’s not roundtrip, is it still best to purchase a JR pass or is it better to get an IC card instead? Thank you!

Hi, I plan to travel from Osaka to Tokyo, and a day trip Osaka-Kyoto (return). We are staying in Tokyo before take off to our country. We want to of course save as much as possible, but not at the expense of convenience. What would be the pros and cons of getting a JR pass or a SUICA card or something else that you recommend? Which one do you think would be best for my situation? Much thanks, RM

Hi 👋 what would you recommend to the people who will stay 4 days in Tokyo and 11 days in Kyoto? We are planning to go there next spring and confused about what to buy, regional train passes or JR pass...
@MasaTanahashi
@MasaTanahashi 4 года назад
I would suggest laying out the places you want to go first and seeing what train lines are closest. You can't really make the cost comparison without knowing where you're going. But in general, JR pass won't be worth it unless you take the shinkansen twice.

Are you able to use the Suica card everywhere or is it limited, because I’ve seen some places saying it’s limited and some saying it can be used at all stations?
@MasaTanahashi
@MasaTanahashi 4 года назад
I haven't travelled to all stations so I can't say for certain, but the ic cards are usable at most stations. It's limited in the sense that some trains require an additional ticket. To ride the shinkansen, you need specific tickets. Any train with reserved seating you'd need to purchase an additional ticket. I haven't had any issues using my suica/pasmo in the greater Tokyo area or in the Kyoto area.

A JR pass will work with all JR lines. You just show it to the people at the gates. You need an IC card or pay separately another way for non-JR train lines.

I guess nobody explains this question on YT, If you're traveling with a group or with someone like your family, do you need to get each IC card per passenger? In case you just need one card for your family, how do others get into gate? Do you pass the card to other member once you get into gate or just keep on scanning (one at a time) whoever holding the card?
@MasaTanahashi
@MasaTanahashi 4 года назад
You're probably right. I've gotten this question a number of times recently. One IC card is needed per passenger. Each card has a unique key to it so when its tapped in, it can't be tapped in again, only out.

I'm confused, can I use to the JR Pass to travel on local metro around tokyo in addition to the shinkansen or only the shin?
@MasaTanahashi
@MasaTanahashi 4 года назад
So, to clarify vocabulary "Tokyo Metro" is the name of a transit company that has a bunch of different train and subway lines. Japan Railways (JR) is another company that own a bunch of train lines. The JR Pass can be used as an unlimited ride ticket for all JR train lines. But you can't use it for Tokyo Metro or other company lines. JR Pass can be used for many, but not all shinkansen as well.

So I can use the Jr pass on the majority of the metro in tokyo?
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
The JR pass is priced for long-distance travel. In the order of 3000-5000 yen per day. Typical use in the city core would be around 400-1200 yen per day. Though going farther or being inefficient with train transfers will cost you more. And it does not work on the majority in Tokyo. It works on a few lines. One of them is a loop line, and much of the city was basically built around this loop line, so it still has quite good coverage despite the few lines it has. So if you have JR pass working while you're in Tokyo, it's often fairly effective. But due to pricing, you want to minimize the time you have it active in Tokyo- if you have it active in Tokyo region, it's time to go to Yokohama and Kamakura, maybe Hakone or Nikkou or Fuji. When it expires you can get ~500-800 yen per day pass for the NOT-JR subway, or just pay the 400-1200 yen you'd likely pay per day just using normally on whichever trains you like.

Thank you for the video. I'm planning to visit Japan once they open the borders to tourists and this was one of the things I was confused about. So essentially a Suica/Pasmo is an UK Oyster Card (for anyone that knows or have been in the UK), that you can get at any machine at the stations as well as top up the card. I have a question regarding returning the card. In order to get refunded the deposit amount, do you still get to keep the card as a souvenir or it goes inside the machine? Thank you once again ☺️

If you look up JR Pass calculator, you'll be able to figure out if it'll be worth it for your trip! Everyone's case is different so you should look into it yourself. As for the suica/pasmo/icoca, if you're going to be taking anything other than JR lines, having an IC card is really nice.
