Hello, I have a question. I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum when I was pregnant with my kids. Now I am considering weight loss surgery. Do you know if there is any correlation between dehydrated and malnourished individuals after surgery and people who have had HG previously? I am scared to be dehydrated and malnourished if I get the weight loss surgery.
@LiveHealthyMD
@LiveHealthyMD 2 года назад
We do not believe there is any association with dehydration and malnourishment. There is no predictability whether or not you will be nauseous after weight loss surgery if you have HG. Although nausea is an early side effect of weight loss surgery, it almost always passes relatively soon - and if it is lasting can be a result of the surgery not HG.

Dear Doctor, Thank you for this great explantion!!!! I am dutch and in the middle of the process. 20 september i have a talk with my surgeon and then we Will decide whether I would go for a sleeve or a bypass. I have spoken to him in an earlier stage and when he heard i have an irritable bowel syndrome he immediately said that I should go for a sleeve, while I wanted to go for a bypass. I weigh 106 kilo, bmi 39,3 and need to loose 40/45 kilo’s. Do you agree on this one?. My irritable bowel syndrome is like when I need to go, I neeeeeeeeeeeeeed to immediately. Sometimes it is solid, sometimes it is fluid. Curious to hear your reaction

I’m in triage right now. I’m seeing the leading surgeon on the west coast and from what I’m told gastric is best. You’ll lose way more weight and less complications. The sleeve is good but you’ll only lose a certain amount of weight and it’s very easy to stretch your stomach out and of course the acid reflux you’ll have to live with. It’s your choice but your best bet is to talk to a actual surgeon not RU-vid. Best of luck gorgeous 🤙🏼

I had the gastric sleeve ten years ago this December. I lost 72 pounds of weight in the first ten months. Gradually over the years I've gained 20 pounds but I do not regret this operation. The first two weeks post surgery are the hardest but slowly you will start to get use to your new stomach. You may feel very cold for a few months because your body will be re-adjusting to the decrease in food intake. I HIGHLY recommend following the twelve step OA programme as it works exceptional well with gastric surgery. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi Ruthie, you can go back to eating solid foods. Your surgeon will have you transition from liquid, to soft foods, to solid foods several weeks post op. We do not recommend you start eating solid foods immediately after surgery. 2 weeks after surgery you will follow a liquid diet, then from 2-6 weeks will be soft foods, then 6 weeks+ post op you can go back to eating solid foods.

Kidney stones are often more common after a gastric bypass and would explain why your surgeon would suggest the sleeve gastrectomy. It is hard to diagnosis or provide medical advice without physically examining the patient, therefore we recommend that you consult with a bariatric surgeon (if you haven't already) about your specific health concerns

The gastric bypass and the duodenal switch due to the malabsorptive nature and reduced nutrient intake. However, we do not recommend you choose a surgery based on the fear of hair loss. Hair loss will lessen within in a few months of surgery and will go back to normal.

My daughter considering she’s “morbidly obese “ her BMI is 60..She was told she may have to loose weight prior or it would be too risky? Also does anyone have a preference bypass or sleeve? Thank you!
@LiveHealthyMD
@LiveHealthyMD 3 года назад
Some surgeons do not feel comfortable doing surgery on patients with a higher BMI. Similarly, some hospitals and bariatric programs can not perform surgery on patients over a BMI of 50 due to hospital restrictions. We recommend you reach out to a few other bariatric surgeons to find one who does perform surgery on patients with a BMI of 60+. If you are located in Georgia or in a neighboring state, we would be happy to direct you to find a bariatric surgeon that meets your daughter's needs. Based on your daughter's BMI, the surgeon would likely recommend a bypass as it offers more significant weight loss results, but this is something you and your daughter would need to discuss with the bariatric surgeon to decide what is the best treatment option based on her health and weight loss goals.

The sleeve is a joke. You lose weight, you look & feel great & then after 2-3 years, the weight slowly creeps back. I regained everything and so do a lot of other people. Nobody ever told me it is possible to regain the weight. Too many people lose the weight & have the same story of regaining it with the sleeve. I think some of the surgeons are too conservative and leave too much stomach. But none will admit that. It's always the patient's fault. No one tells you that upfront stomachs can stretch to the point of your old stomach size.
