I take my dog on as many trips that I can. She is great in the vehicle and loves to sleep in the truck. We have been on several trips with Northology and she even likes Cindy. The only drawback to having my dog along is not being able to participate in activities that the dog can not like white water rafting. I am bringing her with to “Overlanding the Red” which will be her longest ride
My advice is to know the terrain and the extent of difficulty of off-roading prior to deciding whether to take them. If I know I'm going to be wheeling pretty hard, I tend to leave them home with the spouse. For example, I did not take them to Moab with me as I knew I'd be doing some of the hard trails. I did take them to Ouray and to KOAR every year and they do just fine. Also, my dogs are older and I just don't feel they'd have a great time being thrown around the back of the vehicle all day, lol.
Good video, obviously with my channel I take my dog everywhere I go, in fact I will not go on a trip if my dog can’t go. This includes personal life stuff. I’m responsible for her and we come as a package deal. I think it all depends on a variety of things. I’ve made some videos talking about a list that I bring and several of us camping. For me I have a very highly trained protection dog (Dutch Shepherd). Same as what Joe Robinet had (tripper) these dogs are like Malinois from the film John Wick. Very smart, very high drive and very athletic. These breeds are working breeds from spec ops to police k9 etc. They love to please and will not stray from theyre owners. So for me it’s awesome because like you I love to camp/overland alone from time to time with friends. I specifically got a dog that isn’t prone to health problems but would best fit my lifestyle since these dogs can go miles on end. It’s actually to me a lot easier than kids. I disagree that it’s hard or a problem at all camping with my dog. I can see how some dogs wouldn’t be fit or for that matter other pets. My dog travels in a crate never free roaming, which I have a built in platform for her crate after removing my back seats. But I also was a dog handler for many years specializing in homicide/missing persons. I did all the same stuff with my ex partner k9 Apollo who passed away 2 years ago almost a import 145lb Czech shepherd. So it’s just my lifestyle and what I love to do. I couldn’t imagine going camping without my best friend, my dog. PS you ever going to follow us on IG instead of our DMs bahhaha

I do really like having her along and I've been super jealous of folks I've gone with before who's dogs are completely obedient and off leash all the time. I'm worried mine would see a squirrel and be gone but maybe with some more training, it's possible.
Sometimes I wish I had a dog to take around with me. My lifestyle doesn't really work well with dog ownership. My last dog I would have taken along, but he hated car rides as well, but he was calm and was never worried about him running off.
I'm thinking maybe it's really dependent on the breed or at least on the level of training to help them be more obedient and safe. Mine is a sweet heart and she loves people, but she also jumps into their faces to try to lick them and she chases stuff, haha. It's a lot sometimes, but I love her, :D.
We take our dogs on every trip, even when we're ice camping. My camping/overlanding experience isn't complete without the dogs (we have 3). Last month we did a 12 day, 4 province trip to the Rockies. They loved it. I can totally understand why someone would choose not to take them on every trip though.
I think that's awesome! I think if my dog was a little better in the car, I'd probably just take her on every trip and after a few, she'd be fine in all weather and we'd figure out solutions no matter what.
Have two fur buddies. The older one is more seasoned st almost 10 yrs old. He just goes along for the ride. Youngest is 4 in a couple days and does ride very well. His thing is just to be around me. lol

As for the question, I take our Belgian Malinois everywhere. We live by Yellowstone, so depending on what we may be doing in there or in the Greater Area, sometimes leave her at home. The Stone is also not dog friendly. When my local fly shop sends me a fly fishing trip, I always ask the client ahead of time if its ok if I bring my dog with. Some folks just don't like dogs, so she stays home. Something to consider. If we are headed into remote grizzly bear country for some remote fishing, I pretty much insist on it for our safety. Just had a guy attacked near Three Lakes a few weeks back and he ended up killing the griz just before it lunged at him. As a pup I trained my dog to look out for cattle in the wild, making a very big deal when we came across one. A cow kind of looks like a griz... right? So she is pretty messed up always looking for bears. She hits on moose and yes mooo cows. She is not allowed to go after them, just barks and growls letting us know. We go the other way when this happens. I think the big bell on her also helps as she bounces around making plenty of noise. Otherwise, as I Overland around the remote parts of the west looking for new places to flyfish, Orvis the dog is always with me. Thanks again for all the info within this vid. Reminder... Luckily (or unluckily, depending on how you look at it) mine is part Whippet so she fancies herself quite the hunter for a 22 pound pup. She pretty much recognizes all animals anywhere and wants to bark at them. Thanks for the offer on the cabin. That's an amazing offer. Good morning fletch I would try as much as you can take you dog the more you take her the more she will get use to the truck and nose at the camp site some small little restaurants and burger joint will let you bring your dog in if it’s well behaved so I would focus on that and may be go to some training class too and may be when you bring the dog maybe use a ground tent
All good tips! She was good with the ground tent on our last trip. She's pretty well behaved, but also likes to jump up on people. Overall, she's pretty good, but I am definitely considering some additional classes to get her even better at chilling out and listening to me, :D.

No dog sitter, so he goes with. He takes back seat. Need bed, feeding station, food and treat container, his water jug, dog first aid kit, leashes, poop bags, takes lots of space. I don't allow people to mess with him, he is/was a champion show dog, so he's trained differently. He does limit my activities, but couldn't do without him. He's very laid back, he ignores everyone and their dogs. Have to walk him a lot, but we both get exercise.
I do wish my dog was a bit more chill, haha. I love her to death and want to take her everywhere, but she's a trainwreck in the car most of the time, :D. Your dog sounds amazing!
I would love to bring a dog with us. Sadly ours just hates it all. He whines and cries in the car, growls at other dogs and people. It's just not fun for him or us. Maybe the next dog we can train to enjoy it.
Right, I think it may be a little dependent on the breed and type of dog. Overall, mine has fun on the trips, but I can only imagine what she would do in real wheeling situations, haha.
