I was fighting an endless war with the dreaded Staghorn Algae, and was ready to scrap my tank. Then I came across some info that duckweed and algae are in direct competition for light and nutrients. So I let my duckweed grow out of control. It blocked out the light, sucked up all the nutrients, and the algae was gone in a few days. I now keep duckweed in a fishbowl outside, incase I have another algae outbreak.

Omg that's exactly why I'm here, my tank has a whole invasion with algae and I was dead serious on scraping my tank. While I began cleaning it, I realized there were quite a lot of shrimps still alive, which was unexpected, but I couldn't get rid of even half the algae since it was stuck on the moss, and the moss was stuck on the driftwood. Suddenly, I realized what I need, a full blown duckweed artillery to fight these monsters.

I buy pretty much buy any duckweed I find in pet stores and they are always happy to be rid of it because they get it on accident lol

I'm glad you mentioned that it leeches the nutrients. These seem perfect to grow in the open water around my Venus flytrap. Seems like it'll help to keep the water from evaporating and Venus flytraps like very low nutrient water so it works out.

I am building a fish room/ aquaponic plant room/ plant room. I am very interested in your Venus Flytrap growing. It sounds like perhaps you have created a type of bog where you have your Flytraps growing in somewhat of an aquaponic envirorement. I would love to hear what exactly you do.

@@phillip1beer No, my setup is not quite that technical or elaborate. I have an 8x8 mesh pot that is filled with sphagnum moss. I grow B52 flytraps in it. In order to keep them hydrated at the perfect rate, I keep the pot in the top of a stone bird feeder and fill it up with distilled water or rain water so that the bottom of the pot is submerged in water. Problem is, on sunny days the water tends to evaporate. Rain water and distilled water isn't always readily available in my area. I was thinking I could put duckweed in the exposed water to help keep it from evaporating and also leech the nutrients.

@@xfiringsquadx It sounds like a great experiment. My biggest question would be how well the Duckweed would grow in distilled water and rainwater as it is devoid of minerals and without fish, it would probably have no nitrates to feed on. However, I think light is a major factor and It is often grown in plastic tubs with no fish. I would love to hear a full report on your experiment. Do you have a source of Duckweed? I have plenty if you would like some if you reside in the US. It is very hard to kill and I could probably send it to you in a ziplock bag on a damp paper towel in a small box. I have not tried to raise Flytraps for a long time. I think it was before the rise of the internet and I knew very little about caring for them so I failed in the endeavor. It seems I remember that they grow in places like South Carolina in sphagnum moss and sandy soil in a habitat where few plants will grow. They grow in a niche where there are few nutrients available and so they are preditor plants that gather their nutrients from the insects that they trap. Do you grow them inside and if so do you catch bugs to feed them? I have read that if you grow them outside during the warm season they do well and will catch plenty of insects on their own. Actually, there are numerous other predator plants. I have thought of planting a little predator garden. They are very interesting plants.

@@phillip1beer Thanks for the offer. I'm good right now but I'll definitely let you know if I need some. I hope to test this in the spring when the flytraps start growing again. They are dormant right now. I live in south Texas and grow mine outside. They get plenty of food on their own. It looks like crane flies are what they seem to feed on the most followed by fruit flies and an occasional spider or two. If you take good care of them, they'll spread. I started with one plant and now have over 21 different rhizomes. I still grow them all in the same arrangement but it's getting crowded in the 8x8 mesh pot. I leave them out all year and they grow perfect in my growing zone. Mine are native to north and south Carolina like you've read about. Yes, there's quite a few carnivorous plants and they are all very interesting.

@@xfiringsquadx Keep me posted on how it goes with the experiment. Perhaps by then My room will be all up and running. I might have to try growing some myself. Perhaps I can grow them outside and winter them in the lights in my basement. I have heard they need a winter cycle though. It seems I remember them being wintered over in a guy's garage in Chicago. I seem to remember some people saying they put them in the refrigerator to induce the winter cycle. I have heard they need this cycle to grow and be healthy. I imagine Texas night in Winter can get chilly but seldom freezing but warmer daytime temps. I will be very interested in your experiment.

It is actually one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world. It has a complete complement of Amino acids in higher proportions than soybean which does not have a complete complement of Amino acids. Some people use it dried as a spice. It has tremendous potential as a super-food of the future. To say the least it can be dried and added to homemade fish food recipes. It does all of the great things you mentioned in the aquarium but many hobbyists hate it. I look at it as a crop that can be harvested regularly. If you have a little toaster oven, that you can pick up cheap at second hand stores, you can cut the drying time to a few hours baking at low temperatures. there are many videos on youtube showing how to do it. Generally, a few hours at 170 degrees will dry it. You can dry it in the Sunlight on a tray for about 24 hours till it dries out. Store it in old fish food containers. Some fish will eat it like flake food but it makes a very nutritious and natural ingredient in homemade frozen fish food. I am glad to see you are getting back to your hobby. You are a young man and when you are young sometimes other things get in the way. This can happen also at many other times in a person's life. One thing about you is that you have it in your bones. It may wax and wane but you will always return to it because you enjoy it so much. There is no end to the different directions that you can take the hobby so though there may be times you have other commitments that trump it you will never get bored with it.

Your aquarium set-ups looks good to me. The more natural the better. As long the fishes and other habitat are healthy....and for a week without feeding them! Lucky you, you have duckweed. In my country, i cant reproduce duckweed. But water lettuce were plentiful. 😁

I'm constantly fighting the duckweed battle and I'm still losing. I spend hours and hours trying to get rid of it but it always comes back. And then I give up for a couple weeks until all my plants are completely blocked of any light and start dying and then i start the battle all over again. My tank has shrimp so i cant add other fish to eat it. To those in a similar situation, Ive just ordered a water skimmer and i have high hopes. Taken out as much duckweed as I can and will be keeping at it until the skimmer arrives and then it can take over. My tank is pretty large (140 Litres) so I will be adding additional water pumps to make sure all duckweed circulates towards the skimmer....wish me luck!

Biological control methods are the best. I have an 85l setup. I struggled for ages with filters needing constant cleaning, fish dying, algae blooms and nitrate spikes during hot weather. I have given up entirely on the filter now, having introduced duck weed and amano shrimps to keep the water crystal clear. I also have plenty of snails so I never have to scrape the glass. I changed my gravel for a clay based substrate and scattered ceramic rocks on the bottom. I have an air pump to keep the entire thing moving, which is infinitely more reliable than an impeller which will burn out when your filter media gets blocked.

@@Jo-kh1yo The substrate provides surface area for the good bacteria to live in. The bubbles provide motion & air to stop it going stagnant. The amano shrimp provide particle filtration. Basically it does everything a filter would do... All I do is change some of the water from time to time with fresh rain water. In fairness: my tank is under-populated & with really hardy fish.

Yaaay! I ordered 2 1000+ duckweed from ebay for my 50gal long. Im so excited for it to come in!! Rn i have 1 baby oranda😍 and i plan on getting 2 more in the future :3 hope by then ill still have the duckweed

I haven’t caught the duckweed yet lol. I bought frogbit but it almost died out in my tank. I think the surface flow was too much for it. Now I only have it in plant only tanks without filters. I really want nice floating plants like red root floaters but I don’t want to buy them just to lose them to the flow

Frogbit always seems to melt in your tank. I got some eBay and it just died off, I think you need pretty much zero surface movement to grow Frogbit, it seems to hate any kind of surface movement I've read

Duckweed is great for sucking up those extra nitrates that causes algae blooms to appear. I also find my Endler fish are constantly grazing on the stuff and always look well fed with full stomachs, even the fry. I have a red Sea aquarium with a sump and have just superglued 1 half inch course sponge over the overflow grills (to not restrict the water flow going through the grills too much) and it stops any duckweed from getting into the sump where the main filtration takes place. People say it's a pain to deal with - but you only need scoop some out every week to maintain how much is in the tank and takes only a few minutes scooping some out with your hand. If you use duckweed though, only have plants that can live in low light conditions such as Java Fern on bogwood, avoid any plants living below that require high light levels. I always remove some duckweed so there's a small surface part not covered with it, so some light does get through the surface of the water and provides an area where the fish can still go not covered by duckweed and for feeding.

Had a little duckweed but it never took off until I got rid of my HOB filters. With just a sponge filter and airstone the duckweed went ballistic. I'm probably okay with that but monitoring to see how it impacts the fish and plants in the tank. So far, probably okay. Should say tanks plural because it's now in both 10 gallon tanks. One tank has 5 blue spotted sunfish & 5 white clouds, the other tank has a mix of tropicals: cherry barbs, flood light tetras, corys & a neon tetra. Thanks for the video! God bless.

that depends of what your trying to achieve doesn't it. If you are using a bio filter on your tank, duck weed is kinda going in the wrong direction. because your focus is on using the bacteria in the filter to balance the nutrients in the water. if your biofilter is working correctly there should only be enough nitrates in the system to grow the plants you require growth from thus the nutrients produced and nutrients used up are in balance.

Hey keeping fish simple. I just started a duckweed tank in my 30g breeder. Transferred some biological media from an established aquarium to the duckweed tank along with some easy green, a small power filter, heater and a beamswork 6500k light. Duckweed is not really growing

I keep trying to get the duckweed to take in my tank , but i often see my galaxy rasbora swim between the frogbit and chomp any duckweed they can find xD guess it's nice for the males. they often forego feeding time in favour of grandstanding displays and especially the weaker males can grab a snack in a hitch.

Thank u for the info ..... I just brought in duckweed from my outdoor pond & put it in a 30 gallon aquarium with a lot of live planted underwater plants, 2 minnows, a beta, tiny plecko & snails. Keeping it simple & small & easy but I want to save my duckweed. Not having as much luck with the lettuce??? The duckweed is doing great , lettuce dying ,,,,,thats ok. I'd like to keep just the duxkweek but question is about it shading the bottom from lights Concerned that the lights wont get through it to the plants at the bottom ...... ????? Can u answer this for me ? Looks like u have more duckweed than me on top & more underwater plants & it is doing fine..... how does the light get through?? What type of lights are u using as well? i use frogbit, i used to have duckweed all over the surface of my tank but they died after i move them to new tank with new water uncycled water, so i think theres stil few of em but i dont know, yeah they always stuck on the glass and get brown and dry its annoying and spoiled the glass

Sorry, but why did you go away for 2 weeks and not make sure your fish got fed? There are so many options to help with that. Everyone makes mistakes, it's just I recently saved some fish that had been starved for 2 weeks, not even any duck weed to eat. They didn't ask to be put in a glass tank and rely on humans for everything.

Actually I'm struggling to have a sustainable supply of duckweeds. I have some outside and they multiply decently in a week, another is in my molly and guppy tank which multiplies somehow, in my betta tank they don't since the water is slightly acidic because of the tannin and my goldfish tank they gobble them up within an hour though I tend to feed it on them. So for me I really love to have all your extra duck weeds if I can :-) because my goldfish really like snacking on them.

If they get stressed they will absorb the young. That's what I've found out on RU-vid here. I watch a lot of KGTropicals as well as Aquarium Co-op, lots of good info there. Obviously I watch this channel as well.

This junk plant with the small leaves and tiny root strings is horrible. it just made me mad as fuck I had to scoop it out my catfish was got all pissed off it ruined my evening. for some reason it never grows in my other two aquariums though those fish will eat it

Fair enough. I didn't mean to sound overly critical and I DID enjoy the video, it is just the title threw me. I am looking for a tutorial on growing duckweed outside of my 75G fancy goldfish tank sufficient to allow me to scoop up and pour a quarter cup or so 2 or 3 times a week into the 75 as a good veggie food for the goldies along with their pellets, bloodworms, peas etc., plus enjoying the constant de nitrifying effect of the duckweed. When I introduce a lot of duckweed at once into the 75 hoping to have it last it blocks light for my other plants and makes water changes a mess, but eventually it all gets eaten and goes away as the goldies are non-stop munchers eating faster than the propagation rate. If I had a constant 20 or 30 % cover of duckweed that I could control by adding more/less, the other plants get light, the nitrates are consistently consumed and the fish always have something to munch on. Win Win Win. But I have no way of sustaining the supply of duckweed without buying more every few weeks. What idiot buys duckweed constantly lol. I want to grow my own in maybe a plastic tote(s) in the basement or my den with maybe a nano pump for aeration, some sort of reliable light source, etc. to keep a constantly thiriving supply, but I have not found any information on this specific goal. Any suggestions on where to turn for help, what to do to accomplish this...or just tell me I am completely crazy. I have watched a ton of videos about duckweed but I have not found anything on point for what I would like to do.Any help is greatly appreciated.
