KNIME has powerful machine learning capabilities, so should it be your go to choice? There are many advantages to using KNIME, especially the fact that it is free.
KNIME is extremely powerful at machine learning. It is capable of all major algorithms, including complex ones like neural networks. KNIME is also easy to use, and you can do all of this without writing code.

My problem with alternative softwares is that the community isn't as big. So you always have trouble finding helpful resources online. If you have very particular problems they might not be solved.

That is a good call out. I think KMIME does a good job of this and while the community is a fraction of R Bloggers for instance, it is still strong. The KNIME team is regularly on there as well, so I have never had issues getting answers to my problems.

Hi Eric, big thanks for the KNIME intro. Really helped me a lot. Could you please do a RNN (many to one; sequence data) in Keras please? I think I am going to start using KNIME for everything I do now. L

I'd love to except for the fact that I don't know how. I mostly deal with clients at the beginning of the data journey and any type of neural network is well beyond their capability to implement, their needs, and typically their data sets.

@@ewhulbert I am going to try and build it, but it might take some time. If I succeed, would you like me to share the project with you? I have it in Python but don't understand what I did. I am sure KNIME will help me understand it better.

Thanks, Eric, I second your opinion. I have been following your videos and totally support your idea of using tools for being more productive. What is the absolute minimum one should know about data science to help in a regular consulting work?
@ewhulbert
@ewhulbert 5 лет назад
Ashish Pandey do you mean as a typical management consultant or as a data science consultant? For a typical management consultant the answer is not much, but you need to be strong in analysis. Alteryx is mostly used in consulting as an Excel replacement, not as a data science tool. That is a big difference I think between KNIME and Alteryx is that KNIME is a legit data science tool whereas Alteryx is a self service analytics one. Did I answer the question?

@@ewhulbert Thanks for your reply, specifically I am looking for your advice for people who do data crunching through databases and BI tools and want to be future-ready.

@@AshishPandey-vy8wd Once again, its a bit nuanced for consultants. All of it depends on the type of work you are doing. At a minimum I see familiarity with ETL being important because client data is never clean. KNIME is a solid platform for ETL.

Cool bike. I used to have a 2003 Monster 620, but sold it 10 years ago. I loved it, but after too many close calls, I didn't want to risk my life for it anymore.

Thank you, Eric, for the video! I have been in BI for awhile and found a job I want to apply for... but it requires KNIME experience, which I do not have. If I am willing to devote 40 hours a week to learning and practice, how long do you think it would take me to be reasonably functional at it. (FYI, I am an electrical engineer. I have SQL experience and have worked with large relational databases.)

Go for it. Shouldn’t take you too long, just power through and with a background like yours you’ll be good quickly.

Just realized I didn’t answer your question. If you actually spend a whole week or two working on typical projects you’ll be good. The beauty of it is if you understand workflows and problem solving it is really easy to pick up.

Thanks, Eric. I wonder how KNIME compares to Python. I love programming and I find tremendous versatility in Python. Do tools like KNIME really improve your productivity?
@ewhulbert
@ewhulbert 5 лет назад
It can improve your productivity. The biggest benefit to a program like KNIME to using python is the visual workflow. You can easily see what has / has not been done to each segment of data. That is not always that hard when you do minimal pre-processing or the data all comes from one source like in a Kaggle, but real world data is much messier than that. Also, it eliminates any problems with syntax since it is a GUI. One thing I should have mentioned...perhaps I'll do a comparison video...is that you can always just use python or r inside of KNIME. Here is a post on how to set that up www.knime.com/blog/setting-up-the-knime-python-extension-revisited-for-python-30-and-20
