Should you let your Golden Retriever off Leash? 

Imagine a world without golden retrievers it’s deadly

I am a mail man, dogs are a major concern. We are intruders and if a dog is barking, and I put the mail in the mail box and walk away, they think they have succeeded in saving the families lives. You do this day after day and if given the chance, a dog is more likely to bite the letter carrier than anyone else. Even if they are gentle dogs who would not hurt a fly. That being said, I have never been worried about golden retrievers, even barking ones. On my route there is a golden retriever named Reggie. He is my friend, the owner has him off the leash most times unless he is out in the yard alone. He will always come to me happy to see me. The owner even lets him follow me around the neighborhood for a bit as a mail companion. Friendliest dog breed there is.

It can take a while to train Goldens and trust them off lead but with consistency and routine it all pays off. You are so accurate with your tips. Thx so much.

My 10 month old male knows the recall command and we practice daily outside. But small animals or a scent he loves is still too hard for him to leave alone. Great video.

If they don’t have good recall then don’t even think about letting them off leash! Having a good LEAVE IT helps around squirrels and other animals! Having an extended leash or training lead helps also.

My GR (17 months) plays every morning with a bunch of dogs (all off-leash) in a ten acre park that is not fenced. Since he thinks he is running for mayor, he will often take off to greet someone who is just arriving at the park. He is too far away to hear the "Come" command, so I got an e-collar for him. It is only used when the above situation occurs... nothing else. When I "hit" it (on low power), he immediately turns his head to locate me. I then wave and he comes running. Works every time.

Never use a leash with my Golden. She stays at my side without fail.

Suggestion for a video topic - cover the research from the University of California Davis that shows goldens who are spayed or neutered early have a much higher incidence of hemangiosarcoma (the type of cancer that is the most common killer of goldens) and shorter life spans than goldens that aren't spayed or neutered before the age of 2 or so. You can find it via an online search. I don't think most vets who treat a large variety of dog breeds, cats, and other animals know about it, so they will generally push for early spay/neuter. Serious golden retriever hobby breeders are aware of the research and many have changed their contracts to get rid of the early spay/neuter requirement that used to be standard for puppies purchased as pets with a limited AKC registration (which means if they father or have puppies against the contract their puppies will not qualify for AKC registration). The research strongly suggests you should let a female golden go through one or two heat cycles before having her spayed and if you're going to neuter a male it's best to wait until he's 18-24 months old or older. Female goldens who are spayed very early (i.e. 6 months and under) have something like 5 times the risk for hemangiosarcoma versus those who go through a couple of heat cycles. However, ovarian cancer risk goes up if a female doesn't ever have a litter and is never spayed, so it probably makes sense to have a female golden spayed at some point. Most breeders have their females spayed after they've had a litter or two. If you're always going to have your male golden under your control, i.e. on a leash or nearby and under voice control, I don't think you ever need to neuter him if your contract with his breeder allows him to stay intact. But if you do have an intact male you should be aware that a lot of neutered male dogs will tend to be aggressive toward him, and some kennels will not board him or will not allow him to have group play time (which is appropriate, they should not play with other male dogs without being closely supervised). I had an intact male golden and he was never aggressive, but it was very common for male dogs to be aggressive toward him. There are some reasons beyond the risk of cancer not to spay/neuter goldens too early, including more bone and joint issues, a higher risk of developing hip dysplasia, and overall health and development. Their growth plates aren't closed until about 18 months old, and spay/neuter before that age can cause them to be taller, leggier and have a different head shape than they would otherwise. As an aside, the age of the closing of the growth plates is the reason why you shouldn't have your golden doing high repetitive impact activities like jogging or jumps in agility training when they're puppies, as they can cause long term physical problems.

Hey my dog Tokyo (Golden Retriever) is almost 2 months old but hates leash. I got him a body belt as I was a bit concerned using a neck band. But he hates it starts biting it and just wants to get out of it. This is just the body belt I didn't even attach leash to it once. Any tips on how to train him??? Edit my Tokyo is almost 7 months old and loves leash as it symbolizes going out. We would ask him if he would like to go on a walk and that baby would bring his leash to us and raise his arms (for the body belt) . Its adorable how fast these precious creatures change 😂😂
