I’m from New Jersey and I moved to Seattle in 2004. I L O V E this city ❤️ It was initially hard to make friends and adjusting to the rain was shocking that first year, but I acclimated fast and never want to leave. ❤️
I thought the Seattle Freeze was about the shitty weather and got all confused when they started talking about making friends, so I googled the term, now I understand lol
I’ve noticed in a lot of your videos that you’re someone who obviously loves the sun and “nice” weather. But there’s so many people who are really drawn to and enjoy the gloomy, rainy, “bad” weather of the PNW. I think especially as a real estate agent now, it’s important to remember that not everyone craves the sunshine all the time. I say this as someone from Newport Beach, CA who isn’t a fan of the perpetual sunshine and craves the dreary weather of the PNW. Great video!
This is me. I every day I wake up and see a overcast day, it puts a smile on my face haha. I visited Seattle a month ago and i’m seriously considering moving to Seattle.
as a recent transplant. this was a really cool video to see the insights of other transplants and being able to know what places they were talking about was cool. Seattle totally has a vibe and I love it.
I’m about to relocate from Seattle to San Francisco, but I’m gonna miss Seattle. I love the Pacific Northwest! It’s amazing here!!! So beautiful and a lot to do.
It’s me and my husband dream to end up to Seattle in the next few years. My favorite part is the weather plus the cost of living is similar to that of living in Southern California. We’re visiting in six weeks and I can’t wait to return. I’ve always wanted to move to Washington since I was teenager but had never been. We finally visited in September 2021 and we were ready to pack up our life in San Diego and move the day after we returned. I think I’ll be okay with the Seattle freeze because I have two friends and I mostly just want to be by myself and doing things alone.
Great video! I think about moving to the PNW a lot (I’ve visited twice and LOVED it), so hearing about Seattle from a transplant’s perspective is really interesting!
Loved this video!! Great idea Monica 😊 I’m a Seattle local too and recently moved back after going to college in LA so I definitely know how you feel! Plus, I’ve been working in real estate since moving back so I relate even more 😂 Thanks for repping our city so well ❤️
I was born and raised in Victoria, BC which is just across the border from Port Angeles, Washington .. super close to Seattle. I’ve always liked Seattle but it’s too close to where I was born and raised. I prefer sunnier climates and don’t mind the snow ❄️ as well. I’m not a huge fan of rain 🌧 since I was born and raised with it in Victoria … but now live in Madison, Wisconsin which I love. Winters here are much colder with snow plus we also get a lot more sunshine here as well. But Seattle is a really awesome high tech city.
Born and raised in Seattle. The only good things here are the weather and the Seattle freeze (people ignore you.) Y'all are nuts for moving here. I'm going to Bangkok asap.
I moved here from Texas a month ago and I hate it so far😅 I’m scared I’m going to run back home as soon as I have to deal with short, cloudy winter days
Just got back from visiting Seattle, and I’ve traveled the world and Seattle is ……. Not my fav city. Locals always told us to go out of the main city to explore nature but that’s not really my thing. We did visit mt rainier but that’s a two hour drive both ways. We walked everywhere, Capitol Hill, pike place, space needle, even Washington university., just could not escape the despair of the homeless and the endless litter everywhere and the graffiti and vandalism. Sorry for the negative post. I just had high hopes for my first time in Washington and I just feel duped.
Would you be open to doing a video of the surrounding towns like Bellevue or Bothell? For those that want to live in more of the residential areas? Thanks!!
Just moved from Seattle as a young professional. I’ve lived in 7 different states and Seattle area had the meanest, most aggressive, unkind, and unfriendly group of people I have ever met. Human feces and needles litter the streets of a once beautiful city. It’s so sad what the politicians and the uber rich have let happen.
The lack of friendliness and the politicians and rich people are 3 different issues. Lack of friendliness is chefs kiss, don’t come to Seattle for southern hospitality :) the politicians are the problem. Rich people afforded Seattle some of the best tech. Socialist politicians ruined the place, oh and same with people who want hospitality, gfy
I’m originally from the Philippines but the lawlessness in Seattle is really getting bad. I have 6 more yrs to work here in the states then I’m going back home. If you ever go to the Philippines visit boracay maybe the best beach in the world. Bye Seattle , hello boracay. And in Seattle if you are an Asian guy It’s really hard to get dates. Asian ladies want white men and don’t bother asking whites, Latina, or African American ladies because 99.9% they will say no. That’s why I can’t wait to go back home were there are more women than men 😁 I’m a king again.
I hope at least one of you optimistic and energetic young people ends up helping to shape the vision of Seattle. Get involved in government or community building, please!
@@Alyssaa948 I went to college there and could not get out of there fast enough. I got a great job offer in Seattle 5 years ago and moved and literally have not stepped foot back in Portland ever since... best decision I've ever made.
Look I’m from Seattle and I’ve never left and even I know the freeze 😂😂 But I kinda like it? Which is probably the seattlite in me😂😂 ‘I dont know what it is about being from here that makes me make plans and then cancel them.’ I can’t stop laughing about that
Is there like...a Facebook group or something... for transplants looking to make friends?! Hahaha. Hoping to move to Seattle next year myself, but I feel like being older (I'm in my 30's) it's even harder meeting new people to hang out with. Anyway...Love your content, Monica! :)
I’m from Florida, born and raised and I’m DYING to move to Seattle. My husband and I have a trip planned for a week the beginning of September. I’m trying to get him to fall in love with Seattle too. 😂 I’m a flight attendant that had a long layover there and I fell in love with it all.
If you are a democrat, love your city being burn down and love the summer camp of love. this is the perfect place for you. I lived here over 40 years and thinking of retire here but not anymore.
Haha I’m the opposite, my boyfriend wants to move to Seattle and I’m iffy because I only lived in Florida my whole life 🤣 what stood out to you about Seattle? 👀
@@chanelgerena6146 Personally, I love the weather and nature in the PNW. However, after being there for a week+ my husband can't see himself living in Seattle's type of weather climate. He missed being in a hot and humid environment like Florida lol
I’m from Miami, FL and now live in Oregon. I’d love to live in the Seattle area one day, but I love the whole PNW! The rain, weather, and nature are definitely more my vibe.
@@broklynchedur8757 My husband’s family is from and lives in Seattle. Is it discouraged to move to where we have family? How are transplants destroying the city? Do you think the big businesses hiring transplants from all over the world are more responsible than the transplants?
I grew up in the Bay Area, moved to Boston for school and then to Seattle for the foreseeable future :) Seattle is surrounded by water and mountain ranges making a lot of amazing hiking/outdoors experience so accessible while still living in an urban area. I also prefer the gloominess over Boston's frigid winters and humid summers.
I was thinking about Boston and Seattle lol and the frigid winters of New England make me question is it worth it to be miserable 😂, but then the rainy gloom all yea also make me wonder if ill be depressed being there 😂maybe i should just reconsider my choices 😂
@@Mandy-cn8sq The gloom is the most overrated thing in Seattle. It's not as gloomy as people say. In terms of inches of rain, it rains less here than in the midwest. It mists and drizzles in the winter (we are in the middle of a temperate rain forest), then we have dry, blissful summers. Spring and autumn exist, but barely - mostly we have a wet season and a dry season.
@@eviltwin7072 yea I been up here since early April so I caught a couple months of the rainy season and it's not that bad as they make it seem. I'm from Houston where it rains all the time, and when it does rain it's freaking torrential rain. Up here its just like a cloudy day with a drizzle rain. I haven't seen winter yet but as long as it doesn't snow it's fine to me
@@anthonysiler4938 it's ruined by yall, white depressed people. Everyone I know here loves me. Mainly because I'm always happy and yall are always gloomy and upset and emotional. It's embarrassing watching grown adults like yall act that way
I moved from the D.C. area to Seattle about 3 weeks ago :) Shared a lot of the same sentiments as your friends. Being able to drive an hour to see some orcas or drive the opposite way and go on some incredible hikes is something I would never be able to experience back home. You really get the best of everything here. Definitely see myself staying in Seattle/WA for at least 5-7 years!
Please go away, transplants like you are ruining the city and making it garbage. Go back to where you came from, fix it if you have to but don’t ruin my city just because you finished ruining yours
I moved from DC and it’s not ruined at all. Despite your rude tone and negativity we’d love to have you. I’m sorry that transplants are ruining your city. If you have a problem with it maybe you should leave or take it up with Amazon employees since it seems like they are truly dominating the city you care about.
@@robotikempire oh wow! hope the drive goes well. I really like it here and I actually just got back from visiting my parents in DC and the whole time I missed Seattle. So you can say I am enjoying my new life! You are going to love the weather :) feel free to PM me with any questions or anything!
This was such an awesome video. I loved hearing how differently they explained the way they felt about the city and the things they found interesting and how their answers for best places were are different!
Loved that Rachel was in this one! Three years ago I moved here from Florida and Rachel and Monica's videos where all that I watched to get pumped for it and to learn more about Seattle! Best decision I made was moving here!
Monica’s videos encouraged me to move from phoenix to seattle for sure. i moved here in june. there was soooooo much i had to get used to when i moved here but i fully romanticized the idea of the cozy, rainy city and i will not give a full analysis of my opinion of this city until i’ve experienced winter!
@@ilikexboxalot3060 the winters are really mild! everyone seems to complain about the winters, especially locals, but it’s really not bad! im originally from south dakota so im used to extreme weather and brutal winters. i much prefer the rainy winters here!
@@thrashingmetal i love it here! :) the winters are so mild and the summers are the best in the nation in my opinion! i also love that seattle is big enough to have a beautiful downtown with interesting architecture yet small enough to have lots of neighborhoods outside the city center. the light rail has been very convenient for me and im excited for them to expand the lines. the pay here is so much better than any of the other cities i’ve lived in. i was making $35k/yr in phoenix and now i make $80k/yr. (started at $52k when i moved here and have had substantial wage increases and 1 promotion). i like the work culture here. i have so many sick/mental health/vacation days i never had before. the air is so much better here (aside from forest fire days). the water is better. being surrounded by water is incredible. my one complaint is that i think everyone here drives like a grandma but aside from that im loving it!
@@xtw1995 I'm an Iowan, so I definitely know what harsh winters are like! I'm going to Seattle in May for two weeks and am super stoked. Glad to hear you like it. It's my dream city! My goal is to hit up every neighborhood in the city and do the major attractions when I AirBnB there.
Walk down Pioneer square near the court or even Pike Place Market area and you wouldn't want to live in Seattle. Was not like this a few years ago. It's getting really bad. Now if you stay in MI, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland you will have a great time.
yes basically draw a line from highway 167, 405, up to I-5 anything east of that will be nice area. go west then you have to look for areas that are nicer out of the whole community.
Funny I had a nightmare and felt uneasy told myself I wanted to watch Monica she’ll make me relax and here we are! I’m originally from southern Illinois, moved to Texas one semester didn’t have a great education experience so I went to Indiana. I love my teachers but man do I hate the area I’m in. I always thought I hated home but whenever I go back I realize how much I love it! Most people are taught to move away but I’m definitely moving back once I’m done with undergrad and hope to stay close if I choose to continue on. I was literally dreaming about being at home but had to either call off of work or drive back and make it just in time to clock in. I say I want to move try Seattle all the time but who knows maybe I will maybe I won’t.
I've visited Seattle once in December but grew up in Wisconsin so the winter didn't bother me much. Now after living in Phoenix for 6 years I need to give my sweat glands a break and I'm thinking of moving up there next year. I'll be visiting in October and I can't wait! These videos have always been an inspiration for me.
That’s funny I’m actually going in October too! Originally from New York and living in California for work. Seattle has been a place I always wanted to move too😌
Making friends in Seattle is impossible., unless you already know people. I didn't know anyone there and tried for a decade. I left with only 2 friends. I only hear from one of them once I left.
I was born and raised in Seattle, and while I love that so many people now understand why we have always been so proud of our city, I admit that it is in many ways entirely different from when I grew up. That's fine, life moves on, things change. I chose to leave Seattle because of the weather, and because it was growing too fast for me once the tech companies took over. I like to tell people that when I was a kid the tallest building in Seattle was the Smith Tower (happy that your friend liked that building!) Then came the Sea-First building, which was renamed SAFCO Plaza. We called it 'the box the Space Needle came in,' because it was this big ugly black box that was around 50 stories high. I don't know what it is called now. Anyway, happy to watch your videos to remind me that while I no longer want to live in Seattle, it is still a great city and a wonderful place to live for so many.
I grew up in nor cal and have lived in San Diego/LA the past 4 years and after visiting Seattle last year I have really been considering moving up there because I fell in love with the city/nature and everything. Also work in Tech so I feel like everything flows together. But I'm scared to get out there and have no friends/family over there lol
Love this video! Please do more like it! Girl I would move to Seattle if I could afford it! I’m born and raised in Texas and I hate it here, Austin is the only place worth living and I do love this city for what it is but the pacific north west is the best! The nature, the water, the food, the culture, the proximity to Canada, the weather, I dream of moving there someday!
I came from Houston. Been up here in Portland for about 6 months now but I also spend alot of time in Seattle as well. When and if you get the chance, do it. I love texas and I've got to visit alot of the country but nothing compares to the pacific northwest. It's even more amazing than you think it's gonna be.
Lol cannot agree more! I feel corporate culture has exploded in Seattle over the last decade. It's cool that people are increasingly more diverse in race/background, but I find workaholism vibe exhausting (probs nothing like east coast yet tho). Rising cost of living encourages that culture as well, and may be a tipping point for me to move out to the burbs. Wonder if others share this view.
I'm from Seattle. Moved away 5 years ago ! I'm in Texas in Houston and it's now reached its limit for me. It's ghetto here. 😩. I'm ready to move back home but to an area I did not grow up !
@janelytoledo5641 Seattle has beaitful summers. Cost of living is more but jobs also pay more. Great transportation systems. Most people live on outskirts of seattle... 15-20 mins outside city limits. Kent /renton/seatac to name a few places.
Super introverted. I need friends. Guess I'm not moving to Seattle. I live in CT and the freeze is a thing here too. My social time is when I'm driving to and from work and I get to sit in traffic with all these beautiful people.
I can relate both to "sort of" being from here, in that I was born as raised in Spokane, and to being/feeling like a transplant, in that after I left Spokane to join the Army at age 18 in 1978, I lived in so many different places in the US and around the world. I finally ended up in the Puget Sound area (via then-Ft. Lewis) in the Army in 1988, left the Army in 1990, and settled in Seattle in 1991. (It feels ironic to me now that I've lived in the Seattle city proper longer than I've lived anywhere else!) Your video touched on so many good points, and the one about the Seattle Freeze resonated with me. I've found that finding friends through shared interests and activities really helped me to start to overcome the "Freeze". But people here are definitely reserved, in my experience, much like in a lot of Northern European places. But I'm constantly amazed by the fantastic natural beauty of the region and I really love living in a city by the water.
Seriously don't move here. The freeze will rub off on you and pretty soon you'll find yourself being super passive aggressive, manipulative, and pretentious. One time I was in the Midwest and someone actually went out of their way to say hi to me in the grocery store, asked me about my day and such. I just stared at him like "who is this bozo and what does he want from me." Don't be like me, move somewhere nice.
I had to move to WA/Seattle in HS cause my dad was military, lived there thirteen years which was thirteen years too long. Finally moved back to the Midwest with my wife last year and it GENUINELY took a couple months to be comfortable with people being genuine and nice to me. Seattleites are fake as fake can be, the miserable weather makes it worse, and OP is correct, it will rub off on even the nicest of people. Not to mention the downtown is completely drug and crime infested
I was born and raised here in Seattle and yet some of my best friends are recent transplants. I find it funny how locals always complain about the new people and yet, that's what it took me to beat the freeze.
I was born and raised here in Seattle, but moved to a more rural town. I won’t go back. There’s no more Seattlites in Seattle, just a bunch of transplants and I hate each and everyone of them.
I find it hard to believe a Seattle native experienced the freeze. I’ve never heard of that. I’m 4th generation from Seattle and I love the freeze. Seattle is for people who don’t want to bother others, and those who don’t like being bothered.
Could you make a video about the options of public transport in Seattle? Do people use cars as much as in LA? Or they can use the sub or bus to travel around the city? :)
Don’t move here. Public transportation sucks and is unsafe. Very car dependent and lots of traffic. Also there’s the Seattle freeze. Maybe Portland or Atlanta would be better.
Has anyone ever told you look a loooot like Shelby Church? I was actually scared of how much you were similar, even though you were an AI deep fake channel 😂
I moved from Hawaii to Charleston South Carolina for college. I thought my life would be in Charleston but decided to move to Seattle right before the Pandemic hit. All my friends I made were at the Dog Park, to be honest. It's not that hard to make friends :)
@@marystravellife I think London would be easiest because of the language, but I also really enjoyed my visits to Copenhagen. Most probable might be Zurich though because my husband has Swiss citizenship (even though he’s American born), and Switzerland is central. I love France and Italia too, but would likely just visit regularly. My sister-in-law lives in Berlin but I didn’t like it there too much. What part of Europe are you from? Are you moving back to Seattle or a different part of WA?
@@VKat I used to live in London and it’s a great place to live! You can basically travel the whole country including Scotland by bus & train for cheap prices. My home in Austria is close to the border of Switzerland and Germany (about a 20 min drive away). I never lived in Switzerland but it’s a beautiful country. When I visited Berlin I didn’t like it that much either. I moved back to Seattle in August 2021 and I’m still here :)
PORTLAND IS A NO GO!!!! During the pandemics and roits is worse than a hillbilly place. Was okay, at one point a very long time ago. I’m a Washingtonian local 🌲
Portlander here.. I LOVE Seattle for trips, it's a blessing to be only 3 hours away. I moved to Austin, TX for a new experience though because I needed the sunshine, I fucking LOVE Austin. A difference in culture is amazing for me! I don't think very many Oregonians move to Washington since they are so very similar, but Oregon is more friendly and more affordable. I also find Oregon to be a lot more geared towards hippies where as Seattle has a classy business metropolitan feel. I love every visit to Seattle it has an elevated and fresh feel! Your videos are awesome by the way. PNW LOVE
one thing about Seattle is, people seem soo just genuine and chill. honestly I would prefer to be ghosted/flaked on than to force hangouts with people who don't wanna hang, either with me or just at that time. I seriously feel like Seattle is my vibe
Seattle is similar to Vancouver (Canada) it actually sucks when you’re constantly flaked or ghosted even on dating apps. Dating is terrible. And people rather hang out with their partner only everyday and forget about their friends as if they never existed. Not what it’s cracked up to be.
Moved to Seattle from Orange County (Irvine) and lived there for 10 years(West Seattle off 35th and then to Beacon Hill). I was immediately hit with the Seattle Freeze.. It took a minute to make friends but I eventually met my wife (PNW Local) and It didn't take long to convince her to move back to CA with me!
short answer. NO shit's too expensive unless you work in tech, amazon has killed off a majority of small businesses and unless your a game studio artist you will never make enough to live here! homelessness has increased due to a skill gap and most people who lived here back in the 90's have been priced out due to a completely screwed over housing market.
Can the Hawaiian guy and the California lady please say "like" a few more times per sentence? And why do you drink from take-away plastic cups when you sit down in a coffee place?
I was born and raised in California. Moved to Iowa after college then moved to the Seattle area right before the pandemic hit. Alot of the aspects that were described in your video I felt aren't unique to just moving to Seattle. Even though the midwest is known to have friendly people, it still felt like a "Seattle Freeze". It was hard for me to make friends and I had to really try by intentionally putting myself out there. Most of my friends in Iowa are the people I worked with but that friendship did not build easily and most of them are also transplants to that area. People were always nice to your face but they would rarely invite you to go do anything with them or hangout outside of work. It wasn't because they were mean but because they were comfortable with their set of friends they've made over the years of living there. I feel the same way here in Seattle. The pandemic definitely didn't help though in making new friends so only time will tell. I loved all the places I've lived so far. Each place has their own unique characteristics and charm! But so far I've been loving Seattle even during this pandemic!! :D FYI, west coast best coast =P
You could replace Seattle with any major metropolitan city and make this video 50 times. This is how pretty much everyone feels about where they live and those that transplanted somewhere.
I am 62+...kaid skerlong; have lived in WA State since I left MN (t3rd Grade)...with some stints including College in Eastern WA=love it here...unemployed and no vehicle or house of my own...I enjoy your vids, I am a TBI Survivor College Grad [class of 1987]you are looking good
They’ve ruined our streets, and they’re dangerous now that bikes don’t have to stop at stop signs to cross roads, they just jet out in front of traffic like retards.
Born in Jamaica raised in Florida, was a travel nurse for years before I discovered Seattle 8 years ago. The best thing about Seattle and it’s surroundings cities is the amount of activities that are available.
