Should You Open Carry Your Pistol?

Been open carrying for around 16 years, level 2 or 3. Situational awareness is key.

I have to carry OWB. If i don't i end up with bad sciatic pain. Luckily in TN open carry is legal, but i still tend to keep my shirt down over it.

To me you were describing carrying OWB not open carry. If you carry OWB and pull your shirt or jacket over it you would be still carrying concealed.

Open carry is allowed here in MN but I don’t usually do that unless I’m going to the range etc. I just don’t want to deal with the Karens that will freak out.

My spouse and I argue about this. He tells me I should open carry and I say no because I'm 5'2" and 115lbs and can be easily overpowered by a male. I also have my two kids with me while running errands so I'm aware, but sometimes can be distracted. I'd rather stay concealed for that element of surprise 💥✨

My only real concern with open carry is the open invite to confrontation. Where I live it’s normal to see someone with a rifle, we’re on the rural side of things. But when someone passing through sees this they kinda get wide eyed. So in metro areas open may not be the best option. I don’t live in a city for a reason lol.

I don’t care about what ppl say- I open carry and use a holster with retention and I practice deep situational awareness. Strangers thank me for carrying and police friendly-wave at me.

The last thing I want anybody knowing is that I’m carrying a gun. I want them to know I’m carrying only when they get that “surprise”. Pocket carry in baggy style cargo shorts everyday in warm ass Florida is the only way I carry, and it’s usually a “stack and a half” gun like the 365, Hellcat, Shield Plus or CR920X. Lately it’s the 365 macro variant with the radian ramjet.

I like what WPS was saying about open carry. It might be a good idea for all of us to open carry for 1 month a year or something similar. It lets people see how many people around them are usually armed. I think it would surprise a ton of the public to see how many of us are around them all day every day and armed.

i’ve been open carrying for a while. I carry a safariland level two duty holster. I live in Nevada where it’s pretty much normal. A lot of people open carry. It’s been an open carry state since 1864.

I wouldn't recommend small of the back carry. If your back is against a wall, you can't draw. Also, if you fall with the pistol in that position, you can suffer from a serious spine injury in your lower back. Generally I'd only recommend appendix or hip carry.

Tennicore Holster G19x Tlr light, 3 o’clock carry, outside waist. I am able to conceal WITH the TENICORE holster with zero print. I switch holsters and it prints like a mofo. i use the leather pancake holster every day it's low profile but it's a little sticky as far as drawing your weapon , you have to practice your draw as you should with any system , i'm in N.C. so open carry is legal and if i don't feel comfortable in a crowd i can always drop my shirt tail over it concealed just like that

Concealed carry every day, unless I'm in the woods/mountains, then I chest carry. Be aware of the laws where you are as well. I had a friend in Nevada carry all the time, but then he stepped onto the strip and found out the hard way the entire Vegas strip is privately owned! Crazy, I thought it was public space, nope. And I mean I understand where he's coming from bc after the Vegas shooting, an everyday cc guy might think to carry to defend himself and others if he needs, but no no. Be smart, be safe

Should You Open Carry Your Pistol? IMO - No! Absolutely NOT in public. Hunting in Bear country, then yes! You do NOT want anyone to know you are armed, if you do, you BECOME a target and lose element of surprise. Know the law, Keep it small, keep it concealed and keep it comfortable!!! BTW, I have carried concealed since the 1970's without an issue.

I don’t necessarily agree with open carry for the exact reasons you talked about. I’m licensed to conceal carry and only carry IWB appendix with a proper holster. Obviously this takes some time to get comfortable with having a firearm aimed at your junk but it literally leaves no printing and I don’t have to worry about people knowing I have my firearm on me

NC here, been open carrying since 2016. Head on a swivel all my life. Farm raised by a Nam vet and WW11 grandpa. Never had a problem with open carry and pray daily that I never do. Always ready if it happens. 🙏🏼👊🏽💯🇺🇸

Open carry not only draws attention from bad people but it also draws attention from the Police who sometimes like to stop you and ask you questions. I have had a Glock in my pocket in a pocket holster since 2007 without any issues. Stay ready and safe everyone.

Woods, hiking and at home. Had an experience with someone with bad intentions and it’s amazing how quickly the demeanor and attitude of the person changes to compliance when the surprise is presented. 100%. I don’t open carry here in California in public but if I did i would carry a level 2 or three retention holster and learn/practice trapping the arm, turning, pushing away or presenting with a priority in retention techniques.

NO, if a criminal see it, he will try, steal it .walking around in, gas stations, stores, or walking around in on street. Less someone or anyone, know you carrying a pistol, in your pocket or in your wristband. .basically open carry, in public, make you a Targeted individual, people start calling the police, and security Guards, are watching you, and following you around in the store, citizens and costumer and employees, get very nervous, some have very bad ANXIETY ATTACKS. Or psychologically mental breakdown and other things.

I carry somewhat concealed. Anyone familiar with the topic would know I do. But most don't. Where I live, open is an option. In my church, several carry openly. But when I'm by myself I'm not going to make myself uncomfortable either way. I carry for MY comfortability, my safety. Let the chips fall.

I carry OWB every day but never open carry. I have to carry IWB very rarely due to my clothing choices.

No. Unless you're bow hunting, fishing, hiking, or something, in bear country. And ESPECIALLY don't be one of those douchbags walking around with an unloaded AR strapped to your back, because "you can." All open carrying is going to do, is draw negative attention to yourself, or like you showed, a real criminal will just sneak up behind you and take your gun from you.

I open carry everywhere as I like educating the public and law enforcement officers and have a great situational awareness . It will also deter most criminals from even thinking about doing anything shady. I may be targeted, which I already took into consideration before strapping up 🤷

I had a similar experience while walking into my dojo... open caring a 1911/8 rd mag... turned my back to the group so I could see them in the reflection of the glass.... they immediately crossed the street to avoid me... I live 25 miles from Norfolk! I also carry two 10 round mags in a mag holder :)

I work in an environment that requires open carry to enhance security. I have found a good quality "thumb break" holster helps keep my weapon readily accessible but also secure from gun grabbing idiots who get a quick finger in the eye. A thumb break is considered a level two retention. Level three is available but makes your weapon less accessible with slower time to the draw. Nothing replaces staying situationally aware when open carry is required on the job.

Howzit Chadd?.... When y'all were talking about getting in and out of your vehicle,, my thought was, copperz do it their whole shift without taking off their belts or the pistol out of the holster. Just a thought.

OWB is my favorite as long you're wearing the right shirt or hoodie to cover your weapon, and it's not printing while bending over.

you have to be careful presenting in Virginia - the situation you described can be considered "brandishing", but the chances of a handful of knuckleheads from Norfolk (whew) understanding this is very very slim. carrying is serious and I think you have to continue to educate yourself about everything it requires

I pocket carry a Colt Defender in a kidex holster. Totally comfortable in all climates and weather conditions. If legal, I would consider open carry in a level 2 or 3 holster for the deterance benefit.

You already know Chadd doesn't open carry and covers it up. Look what he does with that long hair, scraggly beard, covered in tats and those hillbilly hats. No one in their wildest dreams outside if right HERE would ever guess he is a former U.S. Navy SEAL. I'm sure he even has other SOF who don't even pickup on it other than he is in really really good "combat" shape. Some muscle and very solid with a "medium" build and endless stamina and endurance to go with it. Those big bulky dudes ain't nobody....neither are the 150 pound 5' 9" + guys who are sickly skinny.

You can go quick releasing level two and three retention and just refuse to walk around this world like a scared kiddy cat worrying about how other people might feel. If some goon wants that they’re gonna have to knock me out, figure out the puzzle, then run. I don’t think they’d try it.

Got me 1 of them urban carry lock leather for my glock 31. Owb super close on body and great comfort. And that lock thing works great for retention. Check em out.

Don't do it , I know 2 people out here in Albuquerque/ Rio Rancho area who have been disarmed and another was a very close call. Some of these idiots just don't care, they see an opportunity.

What about someone that lives in a big power wheelchair? NOBODY is willing to train me because of my chair! They have all the high speed low drag tactical wizardry for normal folks but they write wheelchair riders off completely. What? Don’t I need training and practice that actually meets MY needs and abilities? Apparently not because NOBODY will even discuss it with me. Your carry options are extremely limited in a wheelchair. There’s no real estate to hang things on and it requires one hand to actually drive the chair. One guy told me that I was a dead man rolling.

I just purchased a Smith & Wesson bodyguard 380 that fits perfectly in my front pocket and me being with my hands in my pockets at all times which has always been my nature it’s perfect. My winter carry is the Hellcat Pro but the bodyguard 380 is the perfect gun for lightweight summer clothes! it also has the integrated crimson trace laser. Just a great gun in my opinion and with a heavier trigger pull you don’t have to worry about an accidental discharge should the interior of your pocket or something gets snagged on the trigger.

To everyone hating open carry in these comments, dont do it if you dont want to, but dont hate others for exercising rights. Personally, I open carry doing the usual outdoor things, hiking, hunting, camping, offroading. Im also not afraid to stop at the gas station, grocery store, or anywhere else on the way to or from doing those outdoor things.

Most holsters designed for conceal carry don't have locks like holsters worn for on duty to prevent theft. There were some criminals who have attempted to steal guns from officers which is why you see holsters made with different level of safety to prevent theft. Conceal carry is the best choice when out in public and also our responsibility to ensure our firearms don't fall into the hands of criminals. Criminals get firearms from theft and when they use it to commit a crime, how would you feel knowing your firearm was used? Every time a firearm is used by a criminal, anti-2A always lump us in with criminals. Conceal and secure.

I open carry in the wilderness and when I'm dressed like a cowboy. No one bats an eye. I will try to open carry when I'm in my reenactment events and see if anyone even cares.

If I’m trail running at dusk on a random Tuesday and don’t expect to see anyone else on the trail, seems like open carrying with a chest holster would be better than concealed

I have multiple EDCs, multiple holsters - whatever it takes to make sure I carry the best option for the day, every day. I don't open carry for the reasons demonstrated here, but to each their own.

I am from SA and we only open carry on a gun range I use your first option use that on the range you can open carry on the range with short pants with out a belt

I pocket carry,it doesn't print. I tried IWB and OWB. I can actually draw quicker than trying to lift up my shirt and draw when IWB. And a firearm prints too much and is difficult to conceal in these Southern States because I usually wear short sleeve up to Dec.
