In my initial review of the Alpicool T50 12 volt compressor refrigerator I said that if I had any problems that you would be the first to know about it. We did have a problem with the first unit that we received and I thought it important to let you all know how Alpicool handled the situation. Here it is, plus more on the refrigerator's use and how it functions for us.

I too can relate to that. the 18 year old part of my brain says "sure you can" and the 62 year old body beaten up by jumping and other adventures as a young man in the Army says "are you kidding me?" I looked up your link to the unit on Amazon (wife has that Prime thing) and was surprised how inexpensive they are. I was thinking like $700 as it was switching over to load. $319 for the 50T and $349 for the 60T. Something to seriously consider, the Jackery also.

I'm currently investigating a refrigerator/freezer for my build. Liked what was said about the customer service, then I opened this link....I thought give those customer service numbers a call, maybe it was a fluke they were disconnected. All 3 numbers are no longer working...removing Alpicool from my list of contenders.

I have been very happy with my Alpicool C50 (single zone) using it as a freezer. When I am not traveling, I keep it in my car and use it for grocery shopping. My drive home is up to 1.5 hours and it keeps all the frozen foods frozen, even when it 95 and sunny. I haven’t had any issues with it yet.

Thank you for the excellent review. One concern I'm developing is reflected again by your experience. Basically, I have read more than a few reports of these units having problems with excessive current draw as time progresses. Your case is a perfect example of this. As the number of hours of run time increases, some people have reported a similar problem of the current load increasing with these units. Specifically it would have to be an issue with the compressor motor or the fan (current drawing components). I suspect it would be the compressor motor. In the cases I have read about, over a period of use, the refrigerators compressor motor resistance increases, causing them to draw more current. This would be the case if for example the windings, brushes or other components of the motor are not of high quality and good design. A simple test is to check the amps drawn new and compare that over time. If the amps drawn is slowly increasing then eventually a failure is possible. In essence, heat would slowly increase the resistance of the windings and possibly other components resulting in the failure that you had with your first one. While a replacement resolved the issue with the first one, my question is will the replacement eventually suffer the same fate? I would be VERY interested to hear from you again on this replacement unit after you have used it a length of time similar to the original unit that failed. I suspect if it was checked, the compressor motor itself is getting quite warm if not hot while running and that is causing an issue. OTOH....if the people reporting the issue are not leaving adequate ventilation for the unit at the vents, that could cause this problem as well and that is no fault of the unit. If the unit is run with the vents blocked even once, the heat rise could damage the compressor motor. I am planning to purchase one of these as well. Probably the same unit you have. I'm looking on YT for more reviews on these after at least one year of nearly continuous operation to see what the consensus is. I may take some compressor temperature readings on the one I buy to see if that's the case. If so, a SOLUTION might be adding heat sinks to the body of the compressor motor housing. I found your videos very helpful. Thanks again. Their Customer Service sounds stellar. Perhaps there are people who view this video who have put a lot of run time on them and can comment on their experience and that might be helpful to all.

Hello Randy. On my second unit I never had a problem like you mentioned, even after it being ran for a month at a time and I just recently ran 24 hour tests in it for current draw against a new Iceco refrigerator to see which one was more efficient. The Alpicool was by a small margin. I did end up having the Bluetooth feature fail and I contacted Alpicool and they requested I send it back for a refund. They paid for the shipping. I think that these units are more likely to have a problem with the electronics than they are with the hardware, just my opinion. Again though, even though I had the refrigerator for at least a year, I had no problem with warranty because the service was immediate and friendly. They're not aware of my channel and others have reported the same service also. It seems it's easier for them to just give a refund than it is for them to do an exchange though and that's the only reason I don't own one at this time. Of course I have other refrigerators because of my channel or I would buy another Alpicool again without hesitation.

We purchased our T50 almost 2 years ago based on your recommendation for our cargo trailer conversion and would agree they're great units. We have 335w of solar, a Renogy charge controller and 100ah Duracell AGM battery. Will be upgrading to a Lithium Iron phosphate soon but so far have never run out of power even in 85F weather with fridge and ceiling fan both running quite a bit. Also did a week's camping in June, mostly cloudy weather and still never went under 12.3v. Great review!

I brought one of these last year for my boat. It run continuously for 13 months and died 😭 but I loved it so much I’ve replaced it with a smaller model 💖 I recommend running it as a fridge only or dual if summer/running the engine daily. My new plan is to use a Y20 as a freezer and then use freezer blocks in a high quality coolbox as a fridge.

I've had my Alpicool C15 for 3 years and still working great. i got it from Amazon on a flash sale for $110. Used mostly on 2 or 3 day off road desert trips 5 or 6 times a year I have not bought a single bag of ice since having it (ice is not cheap in Death Valley). Because it's not the most durable brand I always strap it down on my sleeping bag to absorb shock and so far so good. My oversized Jeep battery powers it overnight no problem and I have an Awanfi 300w battery pack that runs it for exactly 24 hours if needed. At 3x, even 4x the price, the "better' brands just cost too much.

I've been around these 12 volt refrigerators now for years and I've never seen or heard of one of the compressors going bad (on any brand). Any problem, which has been rare, is usually in the electronics and that's usually the control panel itself. The panel is replaceable and I know that on the Alpicool it just snaps in and out.

Interesting, the original Bluetti AC50 did not have regulated 12V output. That has been corrected in the new version "S". So the original Apicool would not have the limit the Jackery did. However, a new one would act the same as the Jackery.

The reason why it’s acting up when you plug it to Jackery, is the chemistry of Jackery, it uses Lithium-ion while Bluetti used Lithium Iron Phosphate. With Jackery’s Lithium ion the voltage drops as the capacity of the battery depletes while the Bluetti’s Lithium Iron Phosphate retains its voltage @ 12.8v up to 90-95% of its capacity and the refrigerator shuts down when voltage drops to a certain voltage. I experienced this myself with my refrigerator and Rockpals battery using Lithium-ion, but when I bought a Lithium Iron phosphate I have no problems at all, using all its battery capacity. I hope this helps.

I now use nothing but LiFeP04 power stations, mainly for the much longer life of the iron phosphate type of battery. Thanks for that info!

Sounds like the Jackery is working fine! This is like an RV A/C start/run capacitor issue with a small generator. The addition of a "Hard Start" capacitor to the RV A/C quickly solved that issue on my rig... maybe a similar approach with this fridge, maybe? A slightly higher capacity start/run capacitor for the compressor might be in order. Good Luck & Happy Trails!
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 года назад
That was the problem with the first unit I had, but I don't think it's actually a capacitor on these. I read it's more of a "slow start" feature that is programmed in to work like a capacitor. I could be wrong, but I don't see a capacitor "can" on the refrigeration.

Great review! Vevor makes the same model for about $308. I have the 62 qt. Free shipping to Alaska no less! Thank you Amazon! I may add some extra insulation to mind as I'm doing a built-in for a van conversion, so talking about insulating the cabinets it sits it. Of course while still maintaining ventilation. And Amazon has a five year warranty available for about 12 bucks. I was thinking I had to spend $1200 on a dometic, but these are a good buy.

They really do have the best warranty service that I've experienced. I found that if you buy through Amazon, like I did, then it's best to go through Amazon for any warranty or questions. The one great thing about Amazon is that they won't allow slackers to sell on their site.

My Alpicool has been great for about 2 years, the only thing I don't like about it, is, it's almost impossible to read the display during bright daylight. Mine (40 qt.?) only cost $224. on eBay new. It has wheels and handle too, but on the long side.

My 30 quart lasted 10 months, then the fan went. I got no response from my email to the company. It was a small plastic piece (cost less than a penny). After repair it just never cooled right. Now it will not get cooler than 54 degrees. I've replaced it with a bougeRV. Maybe I will try contacting Alpicool again because right now I am not happy.

Yes Maggie, please contact them. If you bought your Alpicool through Amazon then go back through them to get the proper link back to the Alpicool company. I think that makes a big difference in how fast you get service on your complaint.

Those work, but run almost continuously. You can run an 8 cubic feet home refrigerator through an inverter for less power. They are only good for someone in a dorm setting or similar where they have plenty of power, but very little space.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 года назад
Mine only averages 13wh over a 24 hour period, cycles normally and doesn't run continuously at all. If it did I'd return it. These are 12Volt compressor refrigerators, like the dorm refrigerator that you mentioned.

@@gonagain I know I have an Engle that I love. I had an Alpicool and it was trash. 13 wh is impossible. That's 1.08 ah. An led light will draw more than that. I was exaggerating when I said continuously, but they run about 45 minutes out of every hour, even at 70ish degrees. Multiple people have confirmed this on RU-vid.

Yes, we either move it or put a thick wool blanket over the top. But being lower than the heater helps too.

@gonagain
@gonagain Год назад
Hi Marta. It, and most other 12volt compressor refrigerators of that size, use about 13wh per hour in 70 degree ambient temperatures. If I have this figured out right, that would average out to about 24ah per day, or 312wh.

It is running for 5 minutes 2 times every hour when you use it as a single zone 30-40F, yes. But, when set as a dual zone, 4F freezer and 40F fridge, in Max mode it runs 15 minutes and then shuts down for 6 minutes, so different from what you have :). In Eco it runs a longer cycle yet, 25 minutes On and 4 minutes Off, because Eco runs at a slower speed and is struggling keeping it cool, this is with outside temperature 75. It came a lemon-ish. Display doesn't read current temperature in the left bin - I can set it to 40 but don't know when it has reached 40, had to put a thermometer inside. Phone app shows same problem - no current temperature in the left bin. Sent email to Alpicool yesterday on Saturday, will see if anybody responds.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 года назад
If you bought it through Amazon then you need to go to Amazon for a return authorization, even if Amazon's 90 day warranty is up, they will direct you to the proper email for a return. From my experience, you won't have any problem with Alpicool concerning warranty service, but they may have you try a factory reset first. They will most likely have you return it for a full refund and they will pay shipping too.

Just bought this fridge/cooler to use with my mini camping trailer. Looking to do a permanent battery set up dedicated just for the cooler running the freezer/fridge combo option. You mentioned you run it off a "house" battery? Could you give some specifics? I have a solar panel set up just need to get the battery but I dont know which one I should get. There are so many choices 😁. Can you help me out with a recommendation? P.S. Loved your reviews on the T50, its what convinced me to go with that one.

Hello Terry, I have a regular 12volt AGM deep cycle battery hooked up to my roof solar panel and a Renogy controller that runs my refrigerator, lights and fan exclusively. That's the house battery I referred to. Hello, I am looking to buy an AlpiCool T50 but want to make sure my Jackery 500 will be able to keep it running. Most campers are running them on solar power. I see that you have tried running it off a Jackery as well but had some issues. Do you know if it will work on a Jackery500? I do not have solar and so I plan on running it off a Jackery500. I think yours was a Jackery1000.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 года назад
You shouldn't have any problem at all and the Jackery 500 will easily run it for 24 hours or so. Plug the Jackery into 100-200 watts of solar and with any sun at all you'll be good indefinitely.
