Should You Retire in Galax Virginia? 

You’re really right about lack of job opportunity. I love this area, but it’s only sustainable for those who are retired, which is really unfortunate.

I grew up in Galax and while I do miss the scenery, it's really gone down hill over the years. High crime rates and drugs for how small the population is, no jobs, very poor area - people have nothing else to do. It will always feel like home to me and holds a special place in my heart, but I'm not sure I could ever live there again.

I am from central and northern Virginia and have been in this part of Virginia. I would NOT live there. I would personally pick a place with access to better quality medical care. The health care facilities in SW Virginia are NOT known for an ability to tackle complex medical issues.

Enjoyed this. Lived in Hillsville for four and a half years. Like going to Galax. Music is spectacular! Do you have a setlist?

Galax really felt the reality of the furniture industry moving offshore. The New River Trail's western end is in Galax.

Medical care if older is an issue. Crime and drugs can be an issue. Unless you can drive slow then you will get a speeding ticket. 25 mph mostly in the city and cops make a living writing tickets. I have a rental house there. Out of town and in the country would be my recommendation but prepare for winter weather and road issues.

I lived in Elk Creek. Glad was the shopping town. So Very Beautiful 😊

It does Snow But those fire 🔥 stoves and fireplaces start going and the Christmas 🎄 tress protects you from the wind. No better place to live. I'm a New Yorker and LOVE THE YEARS I LIVED THERE

Galax is not what it was. I measure the people by their animal shelter, not their wealth. This animal shelter was despicable for up to 2012. Cats crammed into small areas. No a/c. No heat. No mercy? The dogs had stalls/runs to outside. Merciful? Uh huh....I was watching a show on RU-vid telling the worst places in Virginia to live less than a year ago and Galax Virginia was on the list. I don't care how many hooplas you have here in the music....a town and it's people are it's tell-all.

We just retired and moved to FairyStone. We love it. I see art in many forms and less conventional ways of earning money all around. It's a slower pace for sure, not for someone seeking a career. I haven't lived here long enough to know what it needs, but we're content as is. This is a well-done video. Thank you

I grew up just outside of Galax, But i have liveed away for many years. I do still have family in the area and try to visit as often as I can. But it seems like the place has went downhill. I don't think i could move back there even though it's my hometown.

If I wanted to retire to a place that is boring and no one would notice for a week that I had died, this would be it.

Very nice during warm weather but the winter are very cold and bouts of snow.

Looks too expensive for me, but appears to be a great town, especially in the hills. I bet it gets snow too! I like snow - everyone thinks I'm nuts, too! Thank you for a nice video. When I want to relax I'll watch again and again.

Galax is on our short list for retirement places. We love it there.
