Fixing your drawing means spraying it with FIXATIVE! It's essential to spray your drawings in order to protect them - especially if you've made a drawing with charcoal.
However, there are a few things to consider when spraying your charcoal drawings, and in this video I'll go through exactly what to be aware of.
I'll also share the process of how i spray my drawings.

I am a total beginner but I love using charcoal. I have bought some fixative based on casein as I don't like the smell of other types. I will certainly test well before I fix my next masterpiece! Thank you for all your wonderful videos; they are inspiring.

Your mom will be very impressed. Absolute beauty. I think i have to replace my fixative with a quality one. Thanks for the video and have a good trip to Ireland.

Test your fixative! Some spray wet, some spray dry. The dry stuff is the best. Pay the extra money for a decent spray it's worth it.

A related question! I have charcoal and graphite drawings I just rediscovered from years back. I'd love to spray them, but I'm concerned about sealing in dust. Do you have any suggestions for how to best clean these types of works prior to sealing? 😬

Wow, that's a tricky one.... I am not sure I have the answer. If the drawings are extremely coated in dust, I really don't know how to solve that, because you don't want to brush away any of the charcoal marks. I would probably use something like a really light brush to dust off the areas of the paper that don't have marks of graphite or charcoal and see if that removes the dust. On the other hand if you can lightly shake the drawings and remove any surface dust that way, it might help? I will say that I recently had a situation where there was massive building construction going on right next door to my studio and the dust was incredible. I managed to keep most of my drawings covered, butt the dust got everywhere! .... long story short, I feel like the drawings were fine in the end, and to my eye at least, the dust didn't remain on them. ... I guess you'll need to decide if the layers of dust are actually all that visible and whether or not you spray the drawings. Otherwise, seek advice from someone like a framer? I always ask my framer for tips on cleaning drawings, she's extremely knowledgeable about that. Sorry I don't have an exact answer for you!

Do you spray pencil drawings as well.

Me personally, no I don't. Graphite definitely doesn't smudge or get moved as much as charcoal. But if you wanted to be sure to protect your work, then you can spray graphite drawings too.
