Love the video, and as someone who is currently on the D&D youtube grind, I gotta say, Fred is spot on. The competition is crazy and so much of the platform is often just everyone repeating themselves. You really gotta find untouched niches or do something special if you want to grow, which is pretty tough when you're small and new. But if you've got an angle no one's doing yet - I say jump in!

There's some really good points here. I'm relatively new to being a "D&D RU-vidrs" so here's a bit about my experience so far: - It's a lot more work than I originally thought and takes a lot more time. Which means sometimes motivation dips. - You meet some really cool people. - As said in the video, making money isn't really a thing until you get bigger (10,000+ subs). - Have a goal in mind and stick to that. For example, mine is teaching DM's how to improve their table. - The D&D community is quite opinionated. Hope that helps anyone thinking of making a channel!

Welcome new RU-vidr! Also, thought I would point out... really not a lot of money at the 10K sub mark either. In one month, my RU-vid check amounts to 4-6 hours of work at my day job. So.... not much at all. Especially for the amount of time and work you put in. Ya need to start looking at 50K plus to consider being able to rely on RU-vid as a source of supplemental income.

Forgot to mention the emotional roller-coaster ride as a RU-vidr. When a video is doing good, there is a super high feeling, but when a video does not do very well... that low, is extremely low.

I agree with your panel. It’s really hard to make money in youtube. Just do it for fun. I would add don’t pigeon hole yourself to D&D, like Zero’s Hobbies or Game On, they show more than D&D. I started this for my friends to recap our adventures. I would love to collaborate with some channels.

Great video! Lots of very insightful & realistic perspective on the hobby of RU-vid. One of my favorite things about Vlogging is that it forces me to organize my thoughts and store them in a format that I can sort through at a latter time. 10 years ago the RU-vid search engine included a lot of these small channels, I loved the conversation and camaraderie. Now the feed is all the same stuff, its horrible. But I have recently found that using Bing or another search engine still reveals the more obscure channels, that's how I found this one. Again great video, thanks for taking the time to get together and post it up!

Glad you liked the video. You are right, the RU-vid search engine is optimized to present highly watched content not what you a looking for.

We've a group of 5 50+ DnD 2e group of old friends (high school chums) from S. FLA. I would love to stream this old school, rated R, non-PC festival of shenanigans. It is hilarious. How do we go about doing this?
@DungeonClass
@DungeonClass 3 года назад
If you are live playing in person, I would start with one microphone ( make sure everyone could be heard ) and use one camera. Start small and see if you like it. Getting everyone in frame will be a challenge. After a while, you could add cameras and microphones if you want but that gets more complicated. If you are not together then you can use Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds and there is a way to stream through those platforms.

@@marca81 check out this video . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OVvzsFJQvQU.html It should answer the how technical stuff. One tip I would give you is to make sure everyone’s mics can be heard. Bad sound is the number one reason someone would strip watching. Cameras are secondary to audio. Also, don’t expect a lot to watch your live play video. People just don’t watch them much unless you are Critical Role. Even big channels like Dungeon Dudes who have a huge following don’t get many views. I think it is an attention span thing. I still think it would be fun and you should do it anyway.

Sometimes there is a benefit to breaking a 2 to 4 hour live stream into 1 hour or 1.5 hour blocks.

Big fan of Fred's. Sad to hear him say not to start a channel because I think it is possible. I think it was Wally who said, find your corner of the market and majority of people just do the same as others. It is not unique so it will be hard to grow. I started realizing that and now focusing on bringing more value to the watcher. It would be awesome if you could give our channel a look or review and let us know your personal thoughts on how we are doing! We just started getting more subscribers this last month and gaining more each week. Talk to you soon! - Hector Salgado

Thanks for this informative video! I'm a new DND RU-vidr and am curious as to how much editing you think should be committed to the campaign's episodes? I've just been posting the raw footage, with some small edits like a title sequence and credit roll each accompanied by some songs my friend wrote.
@DungeonClass
@DungeonClass 2 месяца назад
@@PorcinisMushRoom welcome to the the family. I would seek to get right into the action as soon as possible. In the early days of D&D RU-vid everyone had an intro (we did, too) but nowadays attention spans are pretty low and people will click away if you don’t get right to it. People tune into a real play vid to see some real play. Of course introduce everyone but the sooner you get into the action the better. After that, I would say only edit out any super long pauses and breaks maybe. The trend right now is minimal editing which is great. Editing a 3-4 hour video would take forever and you have to think of this as a marathon not a sprint. If you spend hours and hours editing, you are going to burn out quick. I wouldn’t spend too much time on the credit roll either because like it or not, not many will make it that far or even see it. Just the hard facts. Good luck to you:-)

@@DungeonClass Thank you for the warm welcome and for the detailed advice. It's very helpful! I'm happy to hear I don't need to spend a lot of time editing the actual gameplay. That would definitely be exhausting. I'll keep it simple for the long episodes and will continue to make shorts out of the funny scenes.

Most channels in this space have a catchy title that clues the viewer into what the content is going to be about. The best title would answer the value proposition question-what do I get if I watch your channel. That is easier said than done, though. Good luck to you.
