Should YOU Start an Art YouTube Channel?

If you are an artist, have you been considering starting an art channel? It seems like there has been a lot of hype to do so lately...is it a good match for your life and art practice, though? I have some helpful questions and also a tool that I made to organize thoughts when deciding whether or not to start a RU-vid channel. The tool also can help with honing your ideas about a channel--how to make it work for you, and what you can best offer to people for greatest success.
The idea I mentioned about consistency being a promise you keep for yourself: this idea draws directly from a great conversation with ‪@JackieWolven‬ . If you haven't seen her channel, I highly recommend it! Her wisdom and truth bombs and art sessions are like medicine for the soul.♥️

Thank you for this video Anne. I love that it is so honest, and not sugarcoding what starting a Yoou Tube channel is about! And I will absolutley print out those diagrams, perfect to get clear on thoughts and wants and so on.

Thank you for all the thought you put into your channel and this video. I am not interested in starting a RU-vid channel but it helps to hear about your decision process as I am working out other decisions in my life. And, I enjoy spending time with you via RU-vid! This is a great video and one the likes of which I haven't seen before. I can't stand those "start a youtube now, here's my course" or even worse "how I earned a kazillion dollars on youtube and here's my course" videos. I guarantee that if you do an ASMR painting video I will not be watching it and that would make me sad. For some people ASMR is relaxing, for the rest of us it is like nails being scraped down a blackboard. I have seen so many comments on art youtuber channels where people say they had to click away because they couldn't stand the sound. Even worse is videos that have some puke worthy generic music (it used to be called Muzak back in the day, after the company that put music in elevetors) while someone paints. What I would watch is you painting and talking about your process. The painting in the background is really interesting. I love the bold statement of the window and having it jut out at that angle makes for a very compelling composition. Adding the landscape in the background gives an amazing depth of field and the cool night colours really draw you into the centre of focus being the window and the female subject. The warm/cool dichotomy in the colour scheme is fabulous. I'd watch you paint and talk about all that, in a heartbeat.

@@bluewren65 Good feedback! And to be honest I myself do not enjoy watching ASMR vids either. So that probably wouldn't be on track with my preferences! I also enjoy watching people paint and also talk through their thought processes. So that's probably good news!

@@annelivingstonart I'm not sure that's something you should boast about 🤣. Also, re my comment on painting videos: I, personally, would feel tremendous pressure to record an entire painting process and talk about it intricately, plus it would kind of suck the life out of the whole endeavour, for me. But what I really like, is snippets of painting with background on the why and how of what you're doing. I love what you are doing with your channel. It's very much your own thing which is what made me add you immediately to my subscriptions.

My best friend asked me if I’d like to start a channel with my kookie sense of humor about the mundane or senseless beauty. My answer came from my most honest ADHD/Dyslexic part of my brain: HELL NO! My perfectionism is crippling at best. So, no I am not interested in starting a channel, but will be working on teaching some classes at our community art collective. I am not willing to endure the learning curve related to computer/ phone, film editing skills. I’d rather go paint. Very best wishes to you and everyone out there. I'm so glad you started up an Art RU-vid Channel Anne! I think I need to fill in an Ikigai diagram again as I have done in the past to keep me on track. I am so time poor at the moment (due to being disorganized) that I still need to go back and watch your older videos. The only reason I initially started up an Art RU-vid channel was to keep me on track with my desire to become a professional artist. My channel was called 'My Journey to Become a Professional Artist'. I soon realized that people were not interested in 'My Journey' and I think they want to know 'How to Become a Professional Artist.' I changed my channel name to 'A Creative Life' to reach a wider audience. I feel like I am at a crossroads. If I do an art process video, I am not fully engaged in art making because I am conscious of being in the frame and make rash decisions in applying the paint. I am wondering if I am vying towards the art making actually being the 'art' of making the video! I'll stop writing now but I feel I have so much I could say about the subject. Just to add, you make great art Anne and you are a great educator and I would like to see you talk about the materials you choose to use and why and how you go about coming up with a design for a painting.

For those who cringe at themselves in front of a camera, it's also ok to have a channel where we don't see your face! Lots of channels show only the hands, and some don't even have the voice. If you do want to talk, you can do a voiceover so you don't have to improvise on the go.

Great video Anne. Really enjoyed your honesty about the whole thing. Im in great need of face discipline too. 😂 What do you use for a microphone?
@annelivingstonart
@annelivingstonart 4 дня назад
@@TheArtofSaraSokol Hahaha! 😂 most of these videos have me using just the microphone on my phone , although a couple of the outdoor ones I was using a cheap lav mic that I wouldn't recommend because it doesn't work anymore. When I'm doing voiceovers from the laptop I have been using a blue yeti and I think it needs one of those muffler things to put on the head. My garage studio could probably stand to have some more soft things in it to improve sound quality as well. I need to figure out the lav mic situation for sure?!

I love you, Anne! I laughed out loud to the RBF moment. We all make weird faces. 😂 Seriously though this is so useful and will help even if we have a channel because refinement is key to the process along the way. I can already feel that. Also!!! There’s room for everyone. There really aren’t that many art channels. We are a small niche. And the door is wide open for everyone. And thanks for the shout out. Maybe I should offer clarification coaching. I’ve done it in the past, but maybe! ❤🧡🩷

@@JackieWolven I forgot to mention one of my other default faces: pain! I first learned about it when I looked into my baby's face about 16 1/2 years ago and said "I love you" and she mirrored back a look of woe with tiny eyebrows. Later looked in the mirror and realized wow. Every time I really really love some thing I have this look on my face like someone told me terrible news! 😅 good point on people with channels using the venn diagram thing! @@annelivingstonart Back in the day I was a professional cellist. We classical musos all practiced in front of a mirror, partly so that you were always visually checking your technique, but largely because faces do all kinds of crazy stuff when you are really concentrating. When you are performing solo, you are not just playing the music, but you are conveying all sorts of emotions with your face and you want people to feel the music without distraction.

Hello Anne... I started my channel two months after you started yours. My reason for starting a RU-vid channel is to try to and get monetised, to supplement my state pension, when it eventually arrives. I am really enjoying the process and interacting with my subscribers, but the time commitment is significantly more than I anticipated... 12-15 hours per video for filming, editing, etc. Don't believe the pundits who say "you just gotta hit record..." No, no, no... and you don't need to pay for a course either. There is plenty of free information out there, you just need to search for it. I was initially uncomfortable about showing up in front of the camera, but no one is watching anyway, and those that do, are really kind and encouraging. You do need to post regularly to grow you channel and be very determined and consistant about it. I can only manage one video a week because of the day job, so I applaud you Anne for accomplishing two videos per week. You are a natural in front of the camera. I always look forward to your videos...🥰

@@ArtBookNook It reminds me of my younger friend who was deciding whether to have kids or not, and her friends were saying, "Don't overthink it!" And I was like, "What?? It's good to overthink it!!!"
