Thinking about studying architecture? Architecture could be a career path for you. Here are 5 questions to help you decide if architecture is the right profession for you.
If you’re thinking about studying architecture, ask yourself these 5 questions to help you choose the right career. Is architecture a career path for you?

Preparation:
The first question I would ask myself is, why am I considering architecture as a career? Do you have a clear reason why you’re thinking about it or are you parents forcing you into it? Are you doing it because a friend is doing it? Are you thinking about the money (if you are I would be thinking about something else)? Or, are you considering it because of the freedom of location it can provide by working remotely? Do you have a passion for buildings? Do you have a passion for design and creative pursuit? What are the reasons you’re considering architecture as a career? This question alone should solve a lot of concerns for you.
The second question I would ask myself is, what do I think architecture would involve? Write down what you think being an architect would mean for you. Visualise it - see yourself doing it. Can you see yourself doing it every single day? Do you even know what an architect does? If not, that’s ok, now you can research about it. Visualisation is so powerful, if you can visualize yourself 10 years in the future, being an architect, do you see yourself enjoying what you’re doing?
Skillset:
Are you creative? - you don’t necessarily have to be good at drawing, painting, or that - but do you have a creative mindset? Do you think outside the box, do you enjoy problem solving, which stems from creativity? Architecture is a field of design, ultimately it’s a job that requires you to solve problems for a client. Are you creative? Are you a good problem solver?
Are you a people person? - if not, that’s ok. In fact, I’m a pretty big introvert. There’s such a wide scope to the profession that there’s a place for everyone. However, architecture has never been a sole person profession. The idea of the “head architect”, managing a team below them, controlling every decision is no longer relevant. Architecture is now a team game. It’s unavoidable that you’ll have to work with people and be able to do it effectively. It’s a service-based industry. You are a servant to the people you work with and to the client. In both situations, with the “head architect”, and the “team architect”, you are dealing with people.
I don’t mention having to be good at maths or science because I don’t believe you need them to study architecture. Any mathematical or scientific equations or methods you need to know, which are very minimal, will be learnt once you start your architecture education.
The final question to ask yourself is, do you think you’ll be willing to not only put in 110% effort into your education and career, but sustain that effort of the course of your education and career?
A job shouldn’t just be something you do 5 days a week to pay the bills. You can get paid to do anything you want, anything you’re passionate about. If you’re choosing architecture because it’s a safe career and pays well, you might want to reconsider why you’re doing it.
It’s when you get paid to do what you love that it isn’t regarded to as work. That’s when you can sustain a 110% effort for the next 50 years, because you wake up, fired up to do what you’re getting paid to do. That’s much more rewarding than doing something to pay the bills, go home, wake up, and start again.
That’d be my advice and the final question - are you willing to sustain a 110% effort for the next 50 years to do architecture?
And I’m not going to claim that I’m like that. I definitely couldn’t answer this question with a yes before I started architecture. But over time, you can find that passion. You can build it up by actually doing it and finding what you like about it - running with the things you love and ignoring doing the things you don’t love. I always think it’s best to focus on your strengths, rather than your weaknesses. If you’re not good at maths and you hate it, but you’re good at art and you love it. Drop maths as a subject and double down on art. Don’t do what your teachers push you to do and let your passion for art drop off so that you can practice your maths and balance it out. Double down on what you love doing and you’ll become the best at it, you’ll find a way to make money doing it, and you’ll attract success.

Why am I considering architecture as a career? I'm currently studying Interior Architecture. The idea of designing rich people's interiors and million dollar restaurants freaks me out. Even working for 'sustainable' interior firms, there still just designing for ultra rich sustainably minded people. I need to be giving back and helping in someway. I want to be working on social housing and community projects. I'm worried that with my current degree/career path, that won't be nearly as possible as it would be if I were to pursue architecture. What do I think architecture entails? I know it's going to be a lot more technical then my current course. I know there will be a massive chunk of years in my life where my creative freedom is 0%. I imagine I will be way more out of my depth then if I stuck to interiors, but I think I would be excited for the challenge. Am I creative? I would literally die without my imagination. I love problem solving. I love creativity. I am a people person. I am very good at all of the above. I'm great at drawing and have a strong understanding of the software I'll need. But: I'm not confident with maths. I am more then happy to get tutoring for it. I love the idea of becoming confident. I would do it. Could I sustain enormous amounts of effort for the next 50 years? I'm 30 years old so I won't be going until I'm 80 years old haha. But yes. What do you think??

I am currently studying architecture in high school, and I love it so much. I believe that I have a God gifted ability to use creativity to impact the environment around me. More specifically, I want to go into residential architecture. I believe that getting to see my creative abilities and other design gifts to help others enjoy their quality of life even more is just so inviting. Residential architecture is not special to me because of the money, or self-benefits, but rather to help others and become someone who is able to bless people with a structure that they build a family in, or retire and enjoy time in that area. I would recommend exploring architecture to anyone interested. Have a great day everyone!

Thank you for this. I wanted to do architecture because I’ve thought about it since I was in 2nd grade. From time to time I’ve had an idea of changing and trying out different courses but I always came back to architecture. I kept thinking of going a different career path where my yearly wage can be above 100,000 like a CS engineer, dentist, etc. My family’s supportive, but from time to time I hear something like “being a computer science engineer pays well in comparison to let’s say architecture” from my relatives while they look at me. Then I say that I don’t mind if I don’t make as much money, but then they go “oh you WILL once your dad stops paying for your insurance, bills, and all that.” So I got anxious once again and kept thinking if I should really get into architecture. A lot of the videos I found on yt were all quite discouraging saying stuff like “architecture school gave me insomnia.” However, this ended on a good note and kind of encouraged me once again that I want to keep going with this. I’m gonna have to keep myself in a room with a pen and paper one day and think deeply about these questions.

If you enjoy what you do you'll find a way to make money doing it. If you go into something for the money, it's very difficult to find the passion to do it. Obviously one method is more sustainable than the other! Don't be too hard on yourself though. Whatever you choose to do, you'll find what you love about it and can go from there.

Thank you so much Kimberly! I appreciate your support :) I wish I had gotten some experience inside a practice before starting my education. Perhaps while still in high school. You don't need to get a full time job, even just spending a day inside a practice to see how things are done. Buy an architect lunch and chat for 15 minutes to pick their brain etc. I also think reading is a big one that many people forget about. Not only reading, but also online courses and videos on RU-vid etc. All very underestimated and can boost your skills very further ahead than your peers. Hope that helps :)

My reason for wanting to go for architecture is that I've always been into buildings:from an early age I've really been into lego blocks, and from my own imagination I was building ships, with different shapes and structures, because I was also into ocean liners and I still am. Second of all, drawing gets me. When I draw, I try to give my best and feel like I'm doing something that I love. Maybe a third reason is that I'm a person that loves planning. AND DAMN HOUSES. Especially old ones, I like analyzing them, thinking what could go better and how would I do it. But still, I'm not that sure that archi is the way, but hopefully I will set my mind and go for what will make me happy.

my reason for going to architecture is that i noticed as a kid, i loved building houses out of paper and i had a suprising talent for it. Plus i love building and creating things so i thought maybe i should try architecture since it was the only career that stuck out to me. If i were to visualize myself doing architect i can see myself cursing at past me for choosing this course but yet enjoy it all at the same time. I can see myself communicating with my workers, discussing about what plans would be necessary and the joy id feel once the project was finished. in terms of creativity, i think im not that creative but i do have the mindset. I like solving problems, i find problem solving fun and enjoyable but im not good at it. im a very people person and love talking to people. so im confident i would do fine in socializing. I cant say for sure i would be willing to put 110 amount of effort into architecture but i can say as of current i find the prospect of architecture more interesting than other courses. Right now the only thing is holding me back from choosing architecture is the fact that im not good at drawing, technology related things and organization.

Have been an architectural designer for 7 years. Wish I had this video in high school. It only gets harder and with more responsibility as the years go on. Great advice from Kyle overall… especially that you should double down on something you’re interested in and you’ll find a way to make it (wish I had that advice back in high school). I chose architecture because I was into fine art but I was afraid of being a starving artist (why I convinced myself of this I don’t really know). I didn’t know much about architecture at the time but it seemed to mix being creative while also being a practical career. In retrospect I don’t think it a good enough reason not to go into art school. My advice is, go for it if you have a passion for architecture. Think twice if you don’t - you can always enter the field later on if you change your mind.

@kylesinko
@kylesinko 3 года назад
Hey DJ. Thank you so much for the kind words! The answer definitely isn't the same as to when I first started. I was talking to an interior designer with 20 years experience the other week and she said something like "along the way, you try new things and discover new scopes to the profession that suit your character - things that you never realised you'd enjoy before." Through the journey, you discover parts to the profession that tailor to your personality that you never realised existed before. Keep doing those things. Originally, it was something that my brother talked me into. I had no idea what "architecture" actually was. That understanding grew over time and the more I learnt about what it is, the more that passion grew. I hope that helps somewhat

7:34 I’m in grade 9 and this is probably the best advice i have heard so far. I know the “math and art” were examples but i really enjoy doing art (specifically drawing and using the elements of art to create cool pieces of art) I also love designing and coming up with things that could be put out there. I’m not too good at math (i’d say average) and I love science. I was wondering if landscape architecture (the career path I have been thinking a lot about) would suit me or if i should go full on art. Anybody’s thoughts on this would help a lot.

Hi Olgica, I wouldn't be worried if I were you! You'll learn everything you need along the way. In fact, after 5 years of architecture school you still might feel like you know nothing. But, you pick things up as you go, especially once you begin working. The great thing is that all architects are the same and expect graduates know very little about practice/documentation. Good luck :) You've got this

hi I'm 17, senior high in italy and my toxic trait is i can see myself enjoying it more and more everyday in the future in spite all the negative aspects it has. It's the career i think I'll love doing even with it's "bad" sides, is it bad that it's the only option i want and have in mind? talking about grades, physics, maths, arts and English had always been my highest but I'm afraid I'm not creative enough, i actually think I'm not imaginative at all and school ain't really helping me improve that and i don't know what to do about it, same with problem solving. I don't really know what other majors I'd like other than architecture and maybe it's the fact that I've wanted this for so long that's why i can't see myself doing another thing, but i can totally picture myself doing only that in the future

Is there any way to tell if a university has a good architecture course? Are there any universities you would recommend for an architecture degree? I'm considering Al-Qura University for its Islamic Architecture degree but there aren't many reviews on whether it's good or bad, can a university be bad? Also, what's it like working at a firm? Is being a summer intern hard? Is there anything you need to prepare for? You don't have to answer all of these questions I'm just really curious😊

@kylesinko Год назад
Hi George. Like anything with architecture, you'll learn the skills you need along the way. However, having an artistic, or at least problem solving background, will be beneficial and give you a headstart. You won't be at a disadvantage if you aren't artistic, as you'll learn what you need along the way. I know a few architects who work remotely, though this usually comes after time building trust working in an office. You can work for someone across the globe but most companies would prefer a local for hiring in my opinion.

@kylesinko
@kylesinko 3 года назад
Hi Stephan. That's a good question. I'm guessing a building designer would do a lot that an architect would, and would more than likely work with architects to get a project done. The course won't be nearly as extensive as the architecture course but it'll teach you what you need to work on conceptual projects / the resolution of designing a building. The only problem is that with the number of architecture graduates available, the competition might be fierce as you lack drafting and technical abilities. That's not to say it's impossible, it's just more of a challenge if you want to take that road. Not a bad idea in my opinion.
