Hi, Sorcerer, actually, i study maths, because it has become a habit, it's like brushing my teeth in the morning for me. I feel like this is part of me now and for the rest of my life.

Calculus is what led me into mathematics.

When I was in second grade my teacher put math problems on the board. Every student went to the board to try to solve a problem and be the first. I was the only student who could not solve my math problem. Despite the efforts of the teacher and classmates to help me, I just could not figure it out. The teacher was so frustrated that she shouted at me and sent me back to my desk. I was crying. From then on I felt like I just sucked at math. My high school counselor recommended that I focus on humanities. Years later I wanted to study science but knew I would need to get some math under my belt to do that. I started with remedial courses in order to sharpen my skills. I began to do well in my math courses and now have a math degree!

For me, the question is: If you love mathematics, got the best grades in your class during your Bachelor's degree, and enjoy self-studying mathematics in your free time, should you formally study mathematics (such as pursuing a Master's degree), considering that you are a 40-year-old engineer who has always worked in the industry and earns a decent salary?

what are you planning to do with a masters degree in math? also have you considered self studying? sorry for the yapping , but you are asking a good question .

@@Kristielina are you studying mathematics??

@javierfernandoagudelogomez1794 7 дней назад
@@Kristielina I already self-study math in my free time. I'm considering a master's degree in applied math; however, I haven't yet made that decision. When I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering 14 years ago, I wanted to get involved in research, but I couldn't because I needed to work. I have always done my work well, but I've always wanted to switch to an "academic job". Right now, I work for an international engineering company, I'm doing well, and I earn a good salary. However, I've always felt that "man does not live by bread alone"

For me it's the opposite. I'm interested in math, but I don't really like calculus...

@@vagabondvinlandsagashamoan2046 Well, you can get familiar with many concepts by coding. There is a great book by Robert Sedgewick.

im currently self studying calc 1 for the clep exam, but im struggling to understand why people like calculus from a calc 1 perspective. the main reason im doing it is so i can learn calc 3 and linear algebra and beyond btw. but can someone educate me

I studied a lot of non-calculus based physics before I got to Cal I. I remember the physics professors often stating that many of the problems would be easier with calculus. Once I finally got to Cal I, I immediately could see its usefulness. Without the physics experience I don't think I would grasped its applications.
@notofthisworld5267

@fellowtrades7438 I think you're right. Calculus alone seems as if it's missing some element. It's as if there's a few prereqs to understand Calculus the way it should. Just working a problem to be passing a course seems pretty useless. One needs to grasp the concepts in depth, or it all seems so superficial and "loose".

Just because you like sex doesn't mean you have get a PhD in sexology. Look at all those porn stars out there. How many of them have a doctorate? Maybe a bad analogy but not that far off in making the following arguable points (and perhaps less arguably comically). Like anything, if you love something and you keep doing it with effort and attention, you usually only get better at it. But just like you don't need to have a PhD in sexology to be good in sex, you don't need a PhD to be good in math. Yet the the converse really doesn't hold: unlike there are no PhD holders in math who aren't good in math, there can be PhD holders in sexology who are not good in sex. I know; I dated one. So do what you love and ideally can get good at. Usually, we get to love what we get good at regardless and hung up on the silly thinkings it must be one way or the other. _You must understand that there is more than one path to the top of the mountain_ -Miyamoto Musashi
