Summary: presumably improved cognitive function and brain health based on animal studies using INSANELY high doses that would not apply to humans. Has complex polysaccharides which are beneficial for the gut microbiome. As an uncontrolled supplement there have been quality concerns with preparation and packaging, and may have a negligible amount of the beneficial agents. The only couple human studies looking at cognitive benefit were conflicting with one showing improvement over the control but the other showed improvement in both the lions mane AND control group. There is currently not enough evidence and no clear correct dose. Shameless plug: if you enjoy the summary, I’d appreciate if you take a few moments to check out my channel and see if it might interest you!

IDK why we pay attention to studies using INSANELY high doses when there are ones that use low to moderate doses, like one study investigating the effect on behaviour caused by a simulated depression in mice, which found an equivalent dose of 1.25 g (for a 75 kg person) to be INSANELY effective, significantly more effective than half that dose and with little further improvement with twice that dose. In another study they induced Alzheimer's and investigated the effect of lion's mane supplementation for 4 weeks on characteristic behavior and acetyl choline. Lion's mane was INSANELY effective at counteracting the symptoms and raising acetlycholine. The most effective dose for restoring acetylcholine was indeed very high (corresponding to 19 g for a 75 kg person), but there were clear improvements even with the lowest dose of 1.9 g and in terms of behavior, the lower dose actually provided most of the maximum observed benefits. Since we know that lino's mane take quite some time to produce its effects, had the study been for more than 4 weeks, I'm pretty confident the difference between the doses would have gotten even smaller. "The other showed improvement in both the lions mane AND control group." So what? That's the whole point of a control group, to eliminate any effect not caused by the intervention by comparison to it. If you do that you see an INSANE improvement vs. control.

Great video Rhonda! Lion's Mane is very easy to grow inside your home. You can order a kit and you just add a little water and wait. It tastes very similar to lobster when cooked in a pan with ghee or butter. However too much gives me a headache. I would avoid commercial preparations for the reason's mentioned. Also it is worth noting that all mushroom types are great at absorbing and sometimes breaking down poisons and toxins in their proximity. However with this in mind I generally avoid anything I did not grow myself or know the source due to the risk of contamination. Sadly many are sourced from China these days.

I can confirm through blood tests that reishi and turkey tail mushrooms do in fact raise white blood cell counts which is a bonus to your immunity. I pick the fruiting bodies myself (ozarks) and cut them up. They are kept in a tea bag inside my tea kettle that I use to make my coffee each morning. I switch the bag out every 2 weeks or so. Works great!

I find lots of Lion's Mane hiking in the woods where I live in late summer/early fall. I cook and eat it shortly after I pick it and also dehydrate it if I have too much to later add to smoothies, rehydrate and add to stir-fry, etc. I will say anecdotally that I have experienced better health including cognitive function in the past 3 years I've been consuming it, but that may also be to making many other positive health changes. For me, Lion’s Mane seems to actually work. I take very high doses as well, and I feel like my verbal fluency and overall cognition is better. Hand-to-eye coordination also seems to benefit for Thai boxing. I also don’t think that it’s placebo, because I’ve taken many other nootropics and for many, I’ve had expectations just as high if not higher than I did for Lion’s Mane, and yet the effects were either much smaller or non-existent. So it would be unusual if the placebo effect worked extremely well on Lion’s Mane and not at all on other nootropics, despite me having more faith in the other ones, like alpha-GPC, CDP-choline, Bacopa Moniere, Rhodiola Rhosea, etc. Apologies if I misspelled some of them. So yeah, I would say that if you can find it in good quality, get it and try it out, but again, go for higher doses. Also gives you weird dreams as well and stimulates you, so I would take it in the morning/afternoon. I buy from Bulk and am located in the UK, but I’m sure you can buy it from other suppliers.

Honestly - you can't trust the quality when it's on the shelf. They don't use fruit bodies, which contain all the beta glucans (where the health benefits are). Amazon and grocery store products are largely myceliated grains, and the studies are on the fruit bodies itself and NOT the mycelium. I would only buy the fruit body or dried and powdered fruit bodies from a local cultivator. When you supplement, don't supplement daily. Keep on a schedule only... 4 days on, 3 off... or 2 on, 1 off.... or 1 on, 2 off... Some people have an adverse side effect from daily supplementation of Lions Mane. Start low and measure your doses.
