Should You Use Double Poly Walls For Passive Solar Greenhouses

In this video I talk about the type of glazing material you want to choose for your passive solar greenhouse. I get a lot of questions about if I would use double polywall as a glazing surface and so I decided to make a video on what my thoughts are on double poly wall versus a polycarbonate wall.

My greenhouse only has a single layer of poly and the hail in Calgary hasn't even left a dent yet after 2 years. Every time it hails I go out to watch and it just bounces off like a trampoline! I've had hail up to loonie sized and no damage. I have video footage of it.

I’d like to see ‘r’ value testing for air inflated double Polly. I know for double pane windows the size of the air gap makes a huge insulation difference, and double Polly has gaps that can be one or two feet, not one or two inches. Places have ranked it at ‘2’ but I truly believe it’s closer to 4 or 5. Also doubke Polly seems to work better in high winds, acting like a cushion rather than a sail diffusing the wind energy. There’s also the issue of cost, double Polly is literally in the range of 10X cheaper than double polycarbonate. It’s possible to build greenhouses very pretty and amazing with unlimited budget but if you HAVE to consider ROI if you’re using your greenhouse commercially. No one wants to be paying off their building for 3-5 years longer than they need to.

Simple Tek the gap in double glazing has to be too small for the entrapped air to set up convection currents, or it loses most of its R value. Have a closer look at some commercial double glazed windows, the gap is a lot less than an inch - at a couple of feet I would expect the R value to be very poor.

The r value of 6mm twin wall is based on the material only. It needs to be vented, in order to drain any condensate. Two layers with a sealed air gap between would create additional R value of R1 per inch of air space. It would be better to create a vacuum, rather than positive pressure. You need to get rid of all moisture. Vacuum also prevents convection.

Hail so big they paid at one point for advanced cloud seeding never thought of that hazard.

My experience two years ago was inflated poly wall bounced hail off without damage but my acrylic panels were pock marked with cracks after the same storm, needless to say never again.

Is it useful to do a double Polycarbonate or Polycarbonate and a poly ? I'm a hobby greenhouser and I live in central Albert. Thank you for sharing .

Central Alberta here as well. What covering did you end up going with and how has it worked out ? Oh, as well, did you build your own greenhouse or did you purchase a kit?

clear corrugated poly can be used and is ridiculously cheap here in the UK. n its own in a single layer prob not brilliant but I've even seen someone using the corrugated foam you put down before the poly goes on and put 2 pieces back to back on top of the first layer of poly to create a gap to put a second layer on giving you an air gap and increasing the r value. definitely worth considering if cost is an issue.

I'm looking at building a solar hot air box and was wondering whether a double or tripple poly wall would benefit the project? Does a double poly wall reduce the heat needed or increase the heat from the sun? I understand the thermal effects of holding the heat in but am concerned about reduction of solar heat. Any help on this please.

They make twin wall polycarbonate. That can have 70# snow load with 24” support. It is also tested for golf ball sized hail.

Has anyone looked into clear solar panels for greenhouse skin? Apparently they are in the works but not sure when or ?$. Grow food and generate power with the same building.

Hi Rob, I live in a heavy snow load area (Oswego, New York) and am reassembling a 50-year-old Lord and Burnham aluminum and glass greenhouse. I am not going to be installing the glass on the roof. I've been thinking about installing polycarbonate between rafters (where the glass was and using Solexx on the outer surface as a covering. Do you have any experience with Solexx or using a double layer polycarbonate? We also don't get much sunshine in the winter due to the lake effect cloud cover, so maximizing the r-value is one of my reasons for going with two layers. Thank you for your thoughts.

I would recommend you etfe foil, in the Netherlands and Germany they use it for greenhouses. And even architect's use it for houses. I also would recommend blowing air from the outside in, so you dont get condensation in between the layers.

Q: So, can a double polythene wall, with inflated air gap withstand hail and snow load?! Does twin-wall polycarbonate break under strong hail? I'm in Alberta too .. Big decision. Which is best for Calgary ?
@VergePermaculture
@VergePermaculture 6 лет назад
I think it is a question of the size of the hail stone. The air seems to give it some give and bounce so I think the answer is yes to a degree.

From memory Curtis uses a fan in his microgreen house to keep the poly layers apart, so you may also need to account for the electrical cost of the fan in that situation.
@SimpleTek
@SimpleTek 6 лет назад
Craig Overend the fan is under 50 watts, peanuts to run
@CraigOverend
@CraigOverend 6 лет назад
Power systems can have many hidden costs over their life cycle, not all monetary. 50W running 24/7 currently costs about $110 per year here in Australia on coal/gas fired grid, peanuts perhaps, then add the fan cost and any installation cost if you're not DIY savvy. Maybe you have a solar/wind and battery/controller system cost and savings too, and replacements when they fail over the life time of the greenhouse. Then consider the energy and environmental impact used to manufacture or recycle these support systems. Yesterday I watched someone dig old greenhouse poly plastic out of their soil in pieces. I also read how commercial biowaste digester plant compost contains 895 microplastic particles per kg. Then a dead sperm whale in spain with 30kg of plastic film inside it. Maybe double poly still costs peanuts compared to other options. Or maybe a longer lifespan material with high recycling yield makes more sense over the greenhouse lifetime.

Craig Overend you’re probably the only person I’ve ever met worried about 50watts power usage. Did you calculate how much it cost you to make that reply?
@FrancisoDoncona
@FrancisoDoncona 6 лет назад
My three 95 x 28 double poly inflated inflator cost was less than 20 US dollars for a year, you are running too big an inflator. It is only static pressure not pneumatic, no air should really move unless you have leaks. This was a test year new electric service just to those houses, no other load. Correction 21.90

You should look into more factual sources so you aren't damaging he climate and enviourment by feeding into scams instead of focusing on issues that matter.
