This is exactly what the antique singer embroidery foot does. It costs like 800$ plus if you can even find it. It is so pretty. I hadn't though about guiding the heavy thread by hand. It would work with yarn and crewel and other fibers too. Super awesome!

My Bernina 590 has the hover mode as well :) love it

I LOVE all of my Bernina’s. Yes the hover is awesome, I have it on the 830 & 880

My Brother vm5100 has the hover mode as do other machines. It is wonderful.
