one of the toughest and coolest bass lines ever. ABC's first album has some of the most underated bass parts of all time. from start to finish. good job shelby
ABC, Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, all bands well before your time, but clearly you have good taste in music. Would love to hear you emulate Peter Hook from New Order.
EVERY song on ABC's first album has awesome bass parts. I saw them at the Hollywood Palladium in 1982, they had to play several songs both in the beginning and end of the set because they only had 1 albums worth of material.
Was there as well, actually Only played “The Look of Love” twice. Closed the showed with it after playing it earlier in the set. So Cool that U were there also!
Fab! With your help - slowing the video down - I've managed to play the intro lick that I had never been able too. Thanks and well played. Also like the kajagogoo vid.
The first few bars are pure Mick Karn. The master of the fretless. But I'm sure it's Mark Lickley on Bass on the Lexicon album. Anyway, ,,, you nailed it. Top stuff.
Well, let me say this...superb choice in artist/title; and that's just to start. Absolutely top-notch performance in your playing, intonation, tone (and most importantly, the correct 'rests' so that the song doesn't get cluttered). EXTREMELY well done! I look forward to other fretless bands/artists that you may be covering in the future. Would love to see you tackle Paul Young's "Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" with Pino Palladino's exquisite bassline all throughout.
Fretless bass surely deserves more love! And wow, I've never heard this one. That intro is quite karnesque, love it! And your intonation seems to be spot on - and on an unlined fretless it's an achievement I really admire :-) One thing though - you need to make your bass a bit louder :-)
Brad Lang had a fantastic tone and feel on this track. I've just got my old Jazz converted to lined fretless, and came to look at playthroughs on YT, and you did a great job!. Fretless bass is such a great instrument - having great fun with it.
Amazing. Watching you play that is like watching someone perform actual magic. So cool. I'm seeing ABC in concert here in Cleveland in a few weeks and your video is getting me hyped for it. Also, how does someone your age even know ABC songs?
A favourite of mine too (I'm old enough to have bought the album in the 80's!). Unfortunately none of my previous bands have ever been interested in playing this. Great video!
I´m a real child of the eighties and I love this song! Stil got this on vinyl, released in 1982. I´m searching for the bass notes for this song, perhaps you could help me. Would like to play it on bass, too. By the way..... great performance!
Wow!! Can you please show a tiny, slow-no clip of the lick a the and of the fourth measure… about seconds in? I don’t understand! Sooooo appreciate your work!
I don't know why I'm subscribed to your channel I'm very forgetful and you have no previous videos? But I love fretless bass and this is an excellent performance! So past me did a good thing by subbing haha. Rock on!
@HereIsShelby I do follow Mike a little but.. I think I saw some fretless playing of you in front of a window or smth, also on fretless bass, at the end of this video, it recommends me an unavailable video so maybe that's the one I saw from you, anyway I'll stay subbed, have a great evening :)
I thought so. I have a Mazeti fretless 4 and a Mazeti fretted 6. I own a few Mazeti's in various configs. (basses and 6/7/12 strings) I was a kind of Maz Nut! . I know some of the history. Well played.
