My haflinger has really thick mane (as her breed does) and being that she is young and impatient we are still working on her patience and enjoyment so she is easy and fun to work on in the long run. I even went to cut it short in the beginning to start over and start easier to keep it positive for her. On my long haired dogs I work very similar as you do here and it is so relaxing to fiddle! Which also is part in why I took on a long/thick maned breed. :)
I wish my 23 year old pinto had a mane like this, he barely had a mane all his life, I have seen pictures of his dam and sire and they both have very beautiful full mane and tail. It doesn't help when I finally get it thick enough and he decides to rub. My other two have a beautiful mane and tail. I am hoping to get my colt mane and tail like this
It's beautiful, but I didn't think quarter horses were shown with this length of mane? How do others react? I love long manes and have a long mane on my thoroughbred which normally they are pulled and scissored then plaited for the show ring. I flat refuse to cut my horses mane off! and I HATE pulling a mane as it does hurt the horse no matter what anyone says
Thank you! This is how I brush my own hair! I use a detangler and also won’t pull when I hit a knot. Hand untangle, and remove any hairs that aren’t part of the knot first. I naturally find myself brushing my own horses manes and tails the same way, with minimal hair loss. Do you also keep the hair in braids most of the time?
What a beautiful horse he looks so well behaved bless him I'm defiantly going to have to try this technique don't know if I can get the product tho can you get it online xx
I've had him from birth and this guy is just amazing! He passes his gentleness to his beautiful offspring! You can follow him on face book at Show Me The Buckles!
I've purchased this product. It is GREAT! However, I noticed my bottle leaks a lot. Might be worth it to grab a better bottle to pour it into. Wish they had a gallon of the product so I could just refill the bottle :)
For more photos or info on Show Me The Buckles, see (LIKE) his Face Book page or my website RDSequine.com He's such a sweetheart and even more beautiful! His mane has grown over a foot since this video!!
This product it truly amazing! I use it on my quarter horse's mane, which was really short when I got him, now because of santa fe it has helped with growth tremendously. Any other suggestions on how to grow my horse's mane long like Show Me The Buckles?
Sorry, I just saw this! I'm super glad Santa Fe could help your horse be more beautiful! Just keep using it religiously! I also wash his mane with "human" shampoo with Moroccan oil (argon oil). The one I get is from Costco and wow is his mane silky!!
You can buy it at most any feed store, look for the round brush head. I can't remember the name but any brush will work IF it has thick, integrated bristles, NOT anything that is a separate piece it can bend!
Kat Trina he's a American quarter and I would recommend an American paint horse, appaloosa or the American quarter horse for a beginner. I would also suggest a horse older then 8 and don't go cheap, you don't want to end up with a unusable horse for your level.
Been looking for long mane hair care for my horse. (Finally no more school horses, no more riding the horses of spoiled rich people who want a status symbol without doing the work. No more naughty school horse habits.) But been having problems finding tutorials for actual long manes (apparently most people think longer then a foot constitutes 'long') and I don't want to shorten such a beautiful long mane.
It never ceases to amaze me how many hateful people there are out there, with comments calling you stupid even on a video simply about maintaining a thick mane on a horse, really sad. Your horse is gorgeous by the way.
first tip Don't cut it It's a good help it's called patience and waiting when it gets a little long and when you think it's long enough Then you can start on products to help more
Can someone count and comment how many times she said Santa fe please haha she really likes the product you can tell by how many times she has said the name of the product
lol "Very thick hair" he's a QH, not a friesian, that is not very thick hair. I wouldn't even use a brush, if you really want a long mane don't use any brushes, it pulls out so much hair!
Quarter horses can have very thick manes. I have grown up wit them my whole life I grew up with a quarter horse family. I personally have a quarter horse made with I very thick mane like this.
I don't doubt that they have volume, I myself have a QH, but compared to actual breeds that more often have long manes, like gypsys and friesians this mane is thin.
+candymeadowalmondjoy it is very thick tho his is like my horse's mane it is very thick I do agree that they are not as thick as gypsy or freishans lol it isn't close to those but for a QH it is quite thick

+candymeadowalmondjoy His mane is not really thin. If I make a pony tail of it, it would have a 3 inch thickness. That is VERY thick for a QH. People are always surprised when they actually feel it! It takes me an hour to do his mane. I always use a brush, but as you can see in the video I take great care how I am using it and I never use a brush that has flex to it. . I think the results speak for themselves!
Hi does the santa fe help it grow or just detangle? If not do you have any other product you would recomend for growing? plz reply iv'e been trying to grow her tail for so long!!
+Julia Fagbemi It does much more than just detangle. When used constantly, it doesn't leave a residue build up but it rather coats the hair with a silicone type of feel where the brush glides easily through it resulting in less or very little hair loss which will let his hair grow and not break off. Everything you saw me do for his mane, is what you do for his tail. The principal is the same! The key is use it often. I recommend three times a week or more and TAKE YOUR TIME brushing. Fight the urge to pull! Pretend his hair is a tangled gold chain that you don't want to break! Actually for 30 years I was in the jewelry business and I actually think that my patience and technique stem from detangling so many gold chains! LOL!
Show Me The Buckles thanks so much i appreciate you taking your time to reply! Recently she got a fungus in her tail and she rubbed part of her tail bone raw! Obviously my first priority is to get her comfortable but i think a healthy tail is part of that. Thanks again. btw your horse is stunning!
I found giving a feed that works for your horse and a quality supplement has been the best thing for our cob, we have had him 4yrs and when we got him his main was 3 inches, it's only this year that I can it's really picking up length, only after feeding linseed, coconut, turmeric , seaweed and a supplement or mineral lick, his feet were also poor, which now are great too, I only feed in winter here in the UK .
so im 10 and i o to school so if takeing my time do i have to do it in the mornin when i only have like 45 to half a hour to get reddy so do it when i get home or not?
I've had him from birth so he knows the drill! Plus, he LOVES chewing on his Gummy Bears then sucking the flavor from his teeth for about 10 minutes! It's hysterical!
Jackie VanMeter it doesn't matter what you use no matter what hair will come out because it dies gets caught on things and is being held in by a braid.
+Ilja Meerman You can find it on line. Santa Fe is the name. The price will vary so look for the lowest! I just found it for a little over $10! It's over $16 in feed stores! I ordered another case. No, in case you're wondering... I don't get anything from them for a recommendation. I wish I did!
when ever I go into a horse show with my Welsh pony people are always so snobby to him and judge us . Here is one case we have had.Oh I didn't know that they let scabby ponys in here! Whilst he just sat on his cart . I'm most definitely not saying that you are because I think you great from what I've seen but it just really annoys me. do you agree?❤
This looks kinda bullshit to me. My friends horse also has the same amount of hair also really long, she uses knot aswell and uses cowboy magic works perfect~ she sprays in the manes let it do the job for a few mins while shes brushing the horse then loose the knot and brushes.. By time the hair suffocates while it in a knot and falls out anyways. But yeah thats what i think.
Pestilence your friend is doing something wrong then if its dead right away... also these horses are very very well taken care for at top class facility accommodating to reining horses which he is.
Life with horses, I wouldn't say it's common. He's just a regular Quarter Horse. It's seen but pretty uncommon to see a 4 foot mane and 2 foot forelock! Of course they have to have the genes (although it's not on either side of his pedigree) it's certainly not ALL product. If it were then yes, it would be common! But anything you can do to improve the condition of their hair will help to keep it and allow it a chance to grow.
Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair. Lovely mane and horse. My wife's mini has a long mane too (in proportion) like Buckles. His tail drags the ground; she's always cutting a few inches off. She uses Santa Fe as well as Cowboy Magic.
That's why I french braid it. I don't ever put small braids, they will break the hairs but since his mane is very thick (FOR A QUARTER HORSE!!) The big french braid doesn't break the hairs and cools him significantly!!
Emmie Godeaux You can use any heavy plastic brush that is one integrated piece, including the bristles. Not one that has any flex to it, or where the "brush" bristles can come loose. You can find these in most any feed store or on line. "People" brushes work just as well as long as theyre solid.
