Pretty much. My dumb kid self didn't even get the not-subtle satire of RoboCop, it doesn't surprise me the Showgirls meta flew over most peoples' head at the time
I was a teenager when this came out so, naturally, it was much beloved by me, and every male I knew. Keep in mind this was before everyone had access to the internet in their house, and those that did and managed to find porn, it was only still pictures. So this was a big deal. That said, even as a hormonal teenage boy who wore out the already bad VHS copy I'd pulled from most likely HBO, I knew this was a satire. I wasn't even that interested in the process of filmmaking at this time, but this was just so obviously a satire that I was surprised few people seemed to get that. But I was too busy shaming myself to one of my celebrity crushes from "Saved By The Bell" to really make that big a deal about it.
When he says that there is so much nudity it just becomes background noise, I disagree. Most young men just watched this movie in 5 minute increments, if you catch my drift.

Dick Laurent correct me if I'm wrong, but did anyone say this was a Satire when the movie originally came out? I've only heard the Director and cast talk about it being a satire years later. Also, why not just advertise it as a satire, it still had copious amounts of female nudity so I'm sure people would have gone to see it otherwise.
Well telling from the clips and what happened, a lot of black people got beaten, raped, and abused for no reason and with unrealistic expectations. People of all ethnic groups get treated like this every day. No one in real life would just continue a show if someone is injured. That didn't happen for spiderman turn off the dark. Not only that but people who act like Nomi in real life aren't treated that nicely. People don't get attached to mean crazy women who have no clue how to act in public. They get put in an asylum or told not to do certain things. Real life isn't over cruel. I'm sorry but if this is your idea of reality, you need to go outside. And I didn't laugh one bit at this movie.
I've never seen this film but from the clips you've shown, it really does seem to be a satire and I would agree with you. Things like the sex scene and the dialogue really scream satire to me.
In my opinion this movie isn't satire or bad on purpose. This movie is so bad it's good. There is a difference. I think people that may not be fans of movies that are so bad they are good are trying to convince people there is deeper meaning here or this was satire or done on purpose. If this was done on purpose it would have come off as forced. Many movies have tried to fake so bad it's good and failed.
Showgirls is a rag to riches story in which the protagonist found herself right where she started in the movie. If anything, she and us, have been conned into thinking we can win against the House.

It also stars Demi Moore, Robert Patrick, Ving Rhames, and Burt Reynolds. Much like "Showgirls", "Striptease" is also considered to be one of the worst movies of all time and that's why it would qualify as a bad movie that is worthy of a review by FanboyFlicks. Demi Moore portrayed a stripper in that movie so I can imagine a lot of people watching it on home video back in the day.
This movie is so bad that the writer (Joe Eszterhas) wrote into the script of Burn Hollywood Burn a reference to Showgirls calling it "terrible." If the writer later admits that it's bad, it's really bad.
Well he did get to have simulated sex with Elizabeth Berkly or maybe he really did for all we know and It was pretty hot to be fair. It does happen in movies occasionally to make it seem more realistic. It all depends how far the actors want to take it.
There's a reason this movie bombed in the box office only to become a modest success on VHS, and I suspect it has little to do with a sudden cult following..

I think this movie is more relevant today than when it came out. You mentioned the press making things in the entertainment industry seem more important than they are. The Kim Kardashians and Amber Roses of the present are a prime example of that. And the internet just amplifies it.

Showgirls is a worthwhile movie. I think theres a good movie in there but its a bit of a mess. the plot is a bit boring and theres not much suspense but theres some memorable moments. Gina gershon is great in it and theres some interesting relationship dynamics going on in the film.
While the Andrew Carver scene might not make sense you most people, it's not weird at all for someone who is seemingly a popular, well-liked person to become a vicious rapist behind closed doors. In fact, that's how most rapists conduct themselves so they can get away with any allegations towards them. I'll give you the beating part, that was a little out of context & unexpected, but again, this isn't exaggerated because it does mirror real life scenarios.

Great review. Yes, people have been speculating that it has a deeper satircal layer for ages, and I think it probably does. I can understand why it was misunderstood, because it was one of the first big budget R-rated movies that tried to go mainstream. but I think it shows a picture of the showbiz, and its not to be taken too literally. Its also very cheesy at times, but that just makes it fun. A very different movie, and I have to say I'm a closet fan as well.

An old drama teacher of mine from HS actually trained and knows Elizabeth Berkley. He apparently called her after she did Showgirls and he asked her "WTF were you thinking?" She confessed to him that she wanted to do an "adult role" and didn't realize all the exploitative elements until the filming started which she found embarrassing (or so she told him). Sadly though, that was the last time they spoke.
I just wanna know what kind of direction Paul Verhoeven gave Elizabeth Berkeley in order to get her to act like she has electric eels in her blood stream.

It's not too far fetched that the black chick is that nice, most people go above and beyond to be kind to very aesthetically pleasing people. It's just human nature, vane or not, for humans to want to be around and impress beautiful people whether your sexually attracted to them or not.
She is the only character in this movie that I thought was legit sexy... I've been a fan of hers ever since. I actually thought I was bi for a long time because of her (And Angelina Jolie back then, lol)
Dang I’m almost a decade late ⏰ to post a comment. My wife and I love your videos Brother! Watching this film 🎥 so long after it released becomes a time capsule of how weird the 90’s were. I agree especially with the part that this was definitely ahead of its time. But being in my 40’s it kind of does capture the insanity and vile ridiculous nature from that decade… both in life and the story itself. I do agree it’s hilariously tragic watching it, but there is a much deeper story buried in the shallow-like dialogue. Almost as an evil 👿 genius plot… hidden behind the madness.
When it comes to bad actresses, Elizabeth Berkley is the measuring stick. "Showgirls" was the true highlight of her career and it's considered to be one of the worst films of all time. It's very obvious as to why all of her other movies were straight to DVD and home video releases. I'm not even going to mention "Saved by the Bell" because that show is so bad that it could be used as a form of the death penalty. If people enjoy "Saved by the Bell" and "Showgirls" and want to watch it then they are entitled to their own opinions and interests.

I do think Showgirls is a great fairytale. And it's superbly filmed. I love it so much! Snow White does Las Vegas, defeats both the Evil Queen and Prince Charming and moves over. Verhoeven never disappoints...
