One of my favs is the NBA ACTION is FANTASTIC where all five Laker players touched the ball on s fast break & Kareem (Captain) finished said break wit a power dunk.

@@davidconejr4206 ...I miss 80s basketball in general. The college game was great, esp. from '79 to '85. The NBA, with only 23 teams for most of the decade, was packed with talent. You could watch a late night game between the Pacers and Clippers and see good, pure basketball.

He ran them up and down the court and they got the spacing right on breaks. It was un-defendable when done right.

Just to make sure you have your head in the right place or get in the right place Kareem magic Worthy Cooper all of them worked hard before they even met Pat Riley so just keep people in their place and you stay in your place cuz Riley was great but the players are always greater just get that straight okay? The spacing on those breaks was a thing of beauty. Pat Riley was the architect.

Norm Nixon was a helluva player but he was a point guard. It's tough to have two master Chefs in the kitchen. The Lakers got better after Norm went to the Clippers (1 Chef).

No it didnt because the Celtics have had at least 2 exceptional HOFers at center who were BETTER on the fast break than Kareem was for most of the 80s-Parish ran the court and filled lanes as well as any big man ever has, and Bill Russell was the engine/sparkplug/GOAT trigger man of the games 1st fast break oriented offense/dynasty-not a shock to hear a you lying on social media tho Rich

The peak Showtime years were 1984-1987. During this time, esp. 84-85, they were Showtime every night. After 1987, although they kept winning, they became "Slow-time." The whole league slowed down (thank the Pistons) and game became less aesthetically pleasing for the next 25 years (thank the Warriors).

Before my parents bought me a basketball hoop, I would take a racquet ball and shoot it into our rain-gutter in our driveway like I was Bob McAdoo or I'd do a "statue-of-liberty" dunk into the rain-gutter like Big Game James! Long, never-ending summer days with all-the-time in the world with zero responsibilities, and always looking forward to the next Lakers game! Ahhh!!! Such wonderful memories Teddy! Thanks!!!

Look now, LeBron is now a buffed Magic and Davis is the new Kareem. All the role players fill their role perfectly. If it wasn't to this virus, Lakers would've won the chip automatically.

I was a huge Laker fan during those years, Reggie. Although I hated the Celtics, I would have like to see the '85 or '87 team play the '86 Celtics. That was a scary club.

Agreed. Basketball got worse in the 1990s. At least, it was harder to watch. CBS and the 80's....those were the days!

The real "Showtime" era was 1979-80 to 1986-87. Although the Lakers would go on to win another championship (1987-88) and appear in two others (88-89 & 90-91), they morphed into "Slow-time." Guys got old. Guys retired and the NBA game got extremely rugged and ugly.

If not for the Celtics and Philly that one year they would have 8 rings.

Scott had more range than Dumars, but Dumars could run the offense in half court sets better than Scott!

You take Magic off this team and place him on any of the top teams in the West and THAT team is in the finals every year. He made all of his teammates materially better.

If today's Lakers were here they would sweep the the entire play-offs.

He's definitely one of the best players to never make an allstar team. Should've been in 88 and 89, but most definitely in 88.

I lean towards the Lakers teams of the early 80s … faster and deeper, IMO.

He was very good, lenny. He had hops like Russell Westbrook (almost) but he could shoot with 3 pt. range. When Kareem began showing his age in the mid-late 80s, Scott and Magic picked up his scoring slack. Byron gets lost in the conversation about the Showtime-era Lakers but, make no mistake, he was a huge part of it.

@@ChrisN1344 ...Too bad Norm was exiled to the Clippers. However, one of the 4 players in that deal was Byron Scott. The Lakers took care of two issues: 1. Problem with two Chefs in the kitchen. 2. Lack of a perfect 2 guard. Jamaal Wilkes would later get this same treatment. He got to the Clippers and, after 2 months, looked around and retired.

He was underrated. But every guy on that team was made significantly better by the presence of Earvin Johnson.

@@PockyCandy rondo could not pass guys open the way magic could.. rondo was great at hitting the open man but magic was the only guy I’ve ever seen apart from bird occasionally that could literally pass a a guy open it was just ridiculous.. how a guy could b covered n he would pass the ball in a way that got the guy open it was incredible.. he’s 2nd best player I’ve ever seen play.. Or maybe 3rd.. the best player I’ve ever seen is 93 jordan followed by 2001 Shaq.. number 3 is 87 magic

THIS was a great group of men. However, there were a lot of coke-heads and party animals, like John Drew, on the loose in those days.

Looking back, the only teams I saw that could at least "hang" with the Showtime Lakers in their prime and give 'em trouble were: Sixers, Celtics, Bucks, and Pistons. 83 Sixers were the best team of that bunch to beat them for the NBA title, probably the best individual 80s team ever. Not a single weakness at either end for that special Philly squad that season and would've swept the entire postseason if not for the Bucks (that team was also title-worthy as well, in any other year that is). What an era to play in, superteams GALORE...
