Hey guys, as promised here's a casual video of me practicing a bit of shred type stuff, which to be fair I've not done for quite some time. For those of you into this style I thought you may find it a bit of fun.... It'll certainly take me some more time to work it up to the standard I'd like and over the coming months I plan to work on this side of my playing (amongst other things) just for the hell of it.
Sweeping and economy picking is great fun when you can get into the flow.....
(Thanks to Frank Gambale for giving us this awesome technique to play around with, he's the true master imho)

I heard some Gambale and Greg Howe in there. But the economy picking is really amazing. and the jump sweeping where you literally jump back down to high strings and sweep up over and over is pretty effective. like a pianist or keyboard player is able to do easily.

@@AlexHutchingsMusic Yeah, man, I am a "good" guitarist. you know, 70s/80s rocker/wish-i-could-shred guy. People say I'm great but I know I'm just above average but I really admire and appreciate guys like you and all those people who clearly have gone way above and beyond what was considered great back in the 70s and even early 80s. That whole GIT explosion in the late 80s just was crazy. Everyone had an instructional vid. haha Anyway, great to see you reply and best wishes to you!!!!

Musicians! This guitarist actually sounds musical unlike a lot of “Shredders” . I usually don’t hear melody unless I am hearing Malmsteem or Vai but in this case this musician sounds rather good 👍🎸Enjoy!!

Too many shredders sound like they're stringing together a whole bunch of really fast-played rudiments and exercises, alternating with some tricks or gimmicks. Music first! Alex is among the best of the bunch.

I'm not a Frank expert, but I've seen a bunch of live videos and got his modes DVD back in the day, like I was ever going to master that... anyway, point being I don't recall a moment where he seemed to be arrogant or self-praising.

Aw mate you're too kind, it's more about the flow really, I haven't really played this way for ages now, like at least 2 years or so, during the tour 2018-19 I don't think I so much a swept or played in style once.. so it's more about me wanting to incorporate it a little more smoothly etc... But I'm gonna work at it this year for sure. Hope you're well mate. All the best

I've replied to a comment you left a week ago where you were very kind on another video, thank you! Regarding utilising techniques etc, I totally get where you're coming from. I remember doing a run of shows playing only Soul/Motown for just a few months ( I loved it!) but in that time I totally forgot about huge chunks of my playing in other areas. It can feel like we've left something behind, but we haven't! You've got such a high calibre of technique and taste that I don't think its going to take you long to find that 'flow' that you're personally looking for. Thanks again for all you do!

Well said, I LOL'ed because I never thought if it like that but you're right, Gambale uses the pinky as an anchor or fulcrum too. Troy Grady video of Gambale entitled "Frank Gambale's Cascading Sweep Harmonics" shows the master in closeup, Alex is absolutely the most worthy successor to Frank's astounding playing in my humble opinion, their phrasings and note selections and playing technique are truly godlike.

And this now also explains why it was such a problem when he broke that pinky on his picking hand, I never realized how important that "forgotten little finger" is to this style of sweep picking.

Alex I've been playing guitar for the best part of 40 years and still not up to this standard. Sounds amazing. I had an accident where I chopped through my picking hand thumb a year ago and lost the feeling in the tip of it so don't have as much control over the pick as I used to but still love to play and am getting back to where I used to be slowly. You're a real inspiration.

Alex...You are the absolute benchmark for melodic shred fusion!! Your playing is kinda what hear in my head when I'm imagining solos, but my musical and fretboard vocabulary lets me down drastically.

1. First time I hear someone play ghost notes on hammers(?) (0:56) and palm muted slides (1:57) not accidentally and in musical context. 2. Alex, if you still have this guitar, I think playing it more on the channel will make you stand out even more. It's a gorgeous guitar that does catch an eye and it fits you well.
