If silnylon is anything like clothing liner fabric then it can be much more easily sewn when strips of paper are sewn with in it... Newspaper (underneath to help the feeding dogs work better) and some painters tape (so the paper does not move around the nylon) will do nicely. You can afterwards rip away (or make wet and peel away) the paper from the seem... Makes life much easier....
@shugemery
@shugemery 6 лет назад
I did not do it that way but got a feel for sewing it. Made 5 tarps.

I may make a winter tarp in the near future. Watching this video, I had the idea of sewing the doors completely closed at one end, minus the 6-8 inch hole for the hammock line. You're thoughts Shug? I don't need doors at both ends.
@shugemery
@shugemery 9 лет назад
I would not sew mine shut. Sometimes weather changes (wind) and you need to button down one side and open the other. Easier than re-pitching the tarp. That is my thought. Kinda limit your options sewing shut. Maybe buttons or snaps would be better. Carry forth.

Are you heading to the frozen butt hang this weekend?. Going to start to make myself a winter tarp with some temptrol(95% heat reflective)material that is lightweight. More than likely will use the winter tarp plan from diy gear and turn it into a hot hammock tarp tent.wont be able to make the frozen butt hang but there is still plenty of winter left...happy camping!

I am about to sew up my a winter tarp with silnylon and was wondering what you would suggest. I pinned up the ridge line with the bulk and was going to sew it then pin up and make the cat cuts. But this stuff is just as slick as you said and am now wondering if I should but each side out first and then work on sewing it up. What would you suggest? And I apologize if you have answered this already.... every time I start reading thru all the post I see something else that gets my attention and I am off to learning something new.

@bonzaibb12
@bonzaibb12 8 лет назад
+Skhate and Destroy Thanks , I did some further research after posting and found out that it has to do with how curved or straight the hammock is. I was thinking after watching a few peoples videos that sleeping in such a U shape would kill my back. Now I know I just need to adjust the tension for a straighter position. I can't wait I plan on spending 2-3 straight months in it so I will definitely be test running it first for a week.
@shugemery
@shugemery 8 лет назад
+Leona Rose I sleep on a diagonal in the hammock for a flatter lay. Pulling the hammock tighter does not really help much and causes a good deal of tension.....theultimatehang.com/2012/05/the-truth-about-hammock-camping-claim-2-hammocks-are-comfortable/

man, you guys up north and in MN. just really go through a hell in the winter don't you? i mean you have to spend a whole lot more money to have things to fight the cold that we don't in Texas. i'm sure this adds-up to spending a whole lot more money to buy the needed things? where i live there arn't bears. do you have bears in MN.? if you do then god bless you all because i surely would wanna skip a problem with a bear. i'm actually boot-shak'in-scared of bears or even the idea of bears in the proximity. anyway, enjoyed your vid and spirit, too!

Have you ever, or would you consider adding a stove jack to a hammock tarp and "hot tenting" when you use a hammock in extreme low temperatures? Could you close the doors, and lower the edges and make it worth the extra effort?
@shugemery
@shugemery 4 года назад
Not yet. Seems like more work to keep the stove going all night. At least at this point. Be fun sometimes to try but for now I'll just go without.

So, there I am in my kitchen tonight after work, grilling a cheese crisp, when out of nowhere a video image comes to mind. The Shugster is at the park somewhere near the house and down on all fours doing something doofy, like imitating sling blade Karl up close to the camera, when someone else was coming down the trail and out of fear did and about face when they saw you....LOL!!! I couldn't find the video but that's how I remembered it. Great tarp video brother, thank you!

I have oft wondered how to get the the snow to fall off the tarp once it starts to accumulate. This method you have invented with reaching your arm up to knock the snow off seems to me that it just might actually work. I am thinking about the procedures needed to complete such a task and it just dawned on me that I would need to see a video on how to get that done. You might need to do that in a series of videos to show the differences of doing that during the day, or during a windstorm, and possibly 2 for night-time removal because that might get too technical to "cover" in one video! Thanks, another great video here and I learned much as usual!
@shugemery

Add a couple more poles and a couple more flaps and what do you have? A tent :) Now that's a novel idea! A tent with a hammock in it! I am sure it hasn't been done before and imagine the benefits.

I'm surprised you didn't sew in any reflective material to the underside of the tarp to reflect heat to back to you in temperatures that low.
@shugemery
@shugemery 7 лет назад
I'm not sure that truly works unless there is a true heat source to reflect back on you. The tarp keeps wind off and feel that helps immensely in sub 0º temps. Really fine with that.

A couple of good things to have are: A ground tarp under the hammock so you can get out of the hammock in the middle of the night to stand without getting your feet dirty/wet. I have a piece of DuPont Tyvek that weighs next to nothing and is waterproof. I put my pack on top of that to keep it from moving. That way I can get out of my hammock and stand on the Tyvek in my socks without getting them all mucked up. The second thing is 2-4 EMPTY Energy Drink Bottles like Powerade or Gatorade with the wide mouth screw tops. The bottles were full on the first day of every trip, but were consumed on the way in. It makes for easy middle of the night "restroom breaks"! Since you're under your tarp in the middle of the night, a Red LED light clipped onto a baseball cap helps a ton to move around. In the morning you can just empty the bottles out at an acceptable location and reuse them. Make sure you remove the labels from the bottles and/or label them "Latrine Bottle" or something similar so you don't confuse them with your real beverages! LOL I hang my boots inside my hammock (after slamming them together to get all the dirt/snow off of them) by hooking a carabiner though the laces and hanging it on my ridgeline that runs under the bug net. I then slide it down the ridgeline closer to my feet. This allows them to air out over the night, but remain inside the hammock so bugs/etc. can't get into my boots. When you need to get your boots on to go further than your ground tarp, I first unzip my bugnet (I have a Hennessy Asym Zip with the zipper on the side). I transition to the sitting position with my feet dangling in the air. I then get my boots that are hanging on the ridgeline inside the hammocks bug netting and unhook the carabiner and put them on. It takes a little practice but you can get your boots on and off without them even touching the ground. The ground tarp is mainly for the middle of the night quick pee breaks so you don't have to leave from underneath your tarp, which comes in handy when it's pouring outside. ;-)

I just get up and go. Some try to pee in a bottle or such but I like getting up and seeing the night. Feels good getting back in and warm.

Great video shug! A question though.... with the pole on the inside, and the tarp touching it.... would it not want the snow/rain want to come in and drip on you like canvas does? Even in a tent "nylon" it seems like if my gear touches the sides, I get water coming in at that spot
@shugemery

Silnylon does not leak to the touch but I really only use the pole mod in winter so the rain is frozen.

Hey Shug, love your videos, so I made 3 tarps and 3 hammocks to get off the ground. My Thanksgiving camping trip(our first with hammocks) was a bust because our tarps leaked in the rain. I used some liquid seam sealer but maybe it was the wrong kind. I'll address that issue and then we'll try again. Woo buddy!
@shugemery
@shugemery 9 лет назад
Mwaves7857 Was it the seam that leaked? Did you have your line running under your tarps? sometimes water runs down and in. That is why I go with two lines off the ends....
@grappler185
@grappler185 9 лет назад
***** Hey Shug, Can you explain what you mean by "two lines off the ends". I thought I saw one of your videos where you showed your "continuous ridge line". Doesn't the line run under the tarp on a continuous ridge line?
@shugemery
@shugemery 9 лет назад
grappler185 I mean just going off the two d-rings at the end of the tarp ridgelines. Instead of one long continious line. I found that got to be a bit of a hassle for me. Here is a recent tarp tutorial....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4GQPY5BuyPI.html Continious ridgeline is just one way to do it.
