What a delightful review. I am building a humble recording setup for demos and zoom. I was just watching a zoom recording w 3 people. The host audio was so clear that I began to study the mic which was visible in the shot. That brought me to the 51. The SM7 seems to be the darling in podcasting currently. But the the 51 is SO clear and succinct! I’ll be getting straight away.

Hello, just found you from mixer vs interface vid. I invested in one of these last year as I contacted them for a mic to use when streaming live to TikTok. I play saxophone am a little dispointed. It works fine on TikTok but the sound quality with backing music isn’t as good as I want. Will comment on setup on other video. Great post!

Hi, I don't have a shockmount ... I didn't experience any problems with that mic. In fact I loved it. I am not sure whether you could use it with a shockmount actually, because it isn't a standard shape. Thank you for this video, explaining the Shure MV 51 microphone. It was a really good review. However, I need to ask you, maybe a difficult question? I am blind and I was just wondering, how easy do you think it would be to change the different modes, without sight? Are there buttons on it? Or is it a touch screen and if so, is there some kind of vibration to indicate you are moving from one mow to the other? I really like the description of this microphone. I am just starting out on my recording journey, but this Mic seems to have everything I would require. Singing, speaking, instrument pick ups. I know I’ve put you on the spot, and I apologise, but if you were able to give me some advice that would be great. If you don’t think this Mike phone would be accessible for someone with no site, could you please advise me on another type of microphone? Hey! is it necessary or do you recommend using the mic with a mixer/audio interface to do recordings? I’ve got a docusrite itrack dock audio interface btw but unfortunately I don’t know if there’s a way to plug the my shure mv 51 into it...
I bought one but am going mad. The sound is lovely but why do I have an echo in my headphones. The headphones are plugged directly into the microphone. I called Shure but they were no help at all. What am I doing wrong please?
You mention that you use a USB extension cable, but no details. I want to buy an extension cable to be able to record video of acoustic piano using ipad and mv51 for better sound. 1 meter is too short. Can you give me more info on the extension you are referring to. Thank you
Just a great review! This seems like an ideal solution for my acoustic & electric (in front of cab) guitar and drum recordings for Instagram to connect to my iPhone. I've used a Zoom H2 for years to get good sound, but it is a hassle to combine it all in iMovie on my Mac. I would just love to get good sound on the video-file from the get-go, stereo or not. Would this work nicely for my needs or are there good competitors? Cheers!
I don’t think this will record your voice when the video app is recording you on your iPhone. It only records your voice when their own app is open on your iPhone.

Him I just got the MV51 and was trying to figure out how to use it to record a Facebook Live or RU-vid Live while using my IPhone. I can't seem to get the mike powered up without it connecting to the app on my phone, which then doesn't allow me to use FB or YT :(
Hello - just reading your review above - thank you. It has a number of settings for various different scenarios but if singing and playing guitar which setting would you suggest i.e vocal or acoustic, and would the mic pick up both sufficiently? Thank you.
I am struggling to get the Shure MOTIV software for iOS for MacBook that is compatible for MV51. The one they have on the website shows compatibility limited for two other options. Kindly advise and share the right link to download. Many thanks
I’d say the most basic and simple recording app on PC is Audacity, I see it as a must have for anyone who’s starting out with any type of audio work, who doesn’t feel like spending money on something like Ableton.
Can I use this prototype to interface with GarageBand iOS? Like I want to monitor with headphones while I track vocals. Will I be able to hear all of my tracks playing at the same time if I use this device w headphone monitoring? Or will it just monitor the single voice going into the phone? I use newest iPhone 14 GarageBand iOS and it’s very nice. But I need to mic now and hear the music same time via headphones. Would you know the answer to this? Please and thank you.
Hi, I haven't tried it outdoors. I think it would be fantastic for a mobile setup ... and excellent for guitar and singing. But outdoors it might pick up a lot of background noise as well You might want something more directional?

How are you making the video? You can connect the MV51 direct to a mobile phone if you are using that to film. Otherwise, you could record to a laptop or mobile device the audio and later match it to the video
