Feedback from Shure: “Nothing was changed from MV7 to MV7+ XLR circuitry”. Shure is researching delta between XLR and USB performance. I will make update video and provide info in this pinned comment as new information is available.
I really want to buy this mic but your comments about this specific issue and giving me pause... Fingers crossed there is an update which sorts this out!
Same and I have it paired with the Evo 4 interface, but I am thinking of selling my sound setup to I can get this mic. I really want this mic because of the versatility.
Thank you very much! I was looking at the MV7+ and have been awaiting your review. I'm glad I didn't just plunk down the cash for a lesser quality USB microphone. Wow you got a second mic to confirm the behavior, impressed with your commitment to getting the review right! Thank you!
This is a pretty lesser quality USB microphone. I'm not much of a fan of it. I'd personally check out the Rode NT1 5th Gen instead. Plus you get 32 bit floating point support.
Excellent review, as always. If I were to buy now, I might opt for this new one. But as the owner of the first MV7, I think there is no reason to exchange. For me, one of the most interesting points in the comparisons between the podcast models presented was: we know that choosing a microphone today takes into account several factors, including the status that a brand can bring in the case of use in videos/podcasts. But when listening to the tests here on the Sennheiser HD 560s headphones (which are an excellent headphone for analysis as they show the slightest variations in audio very well) it must be said that the Fifine K688 is unbelievable for the price.
That mic just sounds unpleasant to me no matter the connection method. Like a cheap SM7b ripoff. Weird. I hope Bandrew can return the amazon replacement
Fantastic review and great channel, may I ask you a suggest? As far as I understand from your review (I’m italian so english isnt my main tongue) you are saying that contrary with the original Mv7, this new Mv7+ sounds better on xlr and worse on usb, so my question is; on usb do they sound different? Because i was planning to buy the Mv7 but since this new came out for basically the same price, I was thinking to buy the plus instead, but I want to be sure that it dsnt sound worse, would be dumb for me to buy a worse version for my usage. Thanks and again, very great channel!!!
11:29 as a die hard hater and a certified schizo of programs running in the background, thank you for including this simple but effective test. This feature along with the inclusion of USB-C means that this will be my next microphone once I find a good deal for it.
Perfect mate. Just what I needed. I was thinking about the sm7b, but if this sounds just as good, then why not save a chunk of hard earnt. I have a xlr podmic and want to upgrade to a better xlr. Is this better (using xlr)? I’m using it for voiceover/podcasts. Thanks man.
USB: MV7+ definitely sounds nasal compared to the MV7 which has the warmth and smoothness of SM7B. Sad. Might a firmware update fix this? I notice you said that Shure claims the XLR circuitry did not change, but no comment on the USB circuitry.
I do definitely see the use for this microphone, but the usb output sounds waaaay off. Also, it's not very versatile. And why is it so resonant? I'd just go with the original one
Ah! This is so helpful. I have the Shure SM58 and primarily use the MV7 for podcasting BUT I have a tough time with plosives. Any suggestions? Thank you for the video. I'm a total equipment nerd but get stuck in getting the settings right.
The K688 is pretty good for the price. "Only" 16 bit 48kHz and the zero latency monitoring is a bit quiet. It also needs a pop filter intended for an SM7B, otherways there's barely any space between the pop filter and the capsule.
They're good but overhyped, relying on designs from half a century ago without much innovation. I have the SM7B. It sounds great but is unusable, in my opinion, due to the massively high required gain. It brings the noise floor well into the audible range. Their "solution," instead of engineering a new microphone, was to release the SM7dB which is basically just a Cloudlifter. It doesn't actually change the noise floor at all.
@@lizardpeter lewitt has the 240 pro which imo sounds better than the sm5b but the reliability of the sm7db is the reason i use it, i can eq it by heart and make it sound better with most voices
@@volvvix I'm going to try out the NT1 5th Gen. I've seen a lot of great things. High sensitivity and one of the lowest self noise figures on the market. I love the SM7B sound but for my application the high noise floor makes it unusable after adding all the required gain.
@lizardpeter yea everyone has their own needs for equipment don't even feel pressure to buy a product, do the research and find the right fit I happen to use the sm7db because I'm familiar with its sound and I think it's one of the most reliable microphones I own but the 240 from lewitt is also a microphone I rely on
@@volvvix Yeah, I just took a look at that one from Lewitt and unfortunately I don’t think it will work for me as it has lower sensitivity and much higher self noise than the NT1, so it would probably perform similarly in terms of noise to the SM7B I already have, but thanks for the recommendation!
hey Bandrew I have been following you for a long time, you are definitely the best at reviewing microphones. there is a certain microphone that interests me a lot, unfortunately there are not many reviews about it, could you ask Golden Age if they can send you the Ga 8000 for a video? It would be very interesting and I would finally have a nice review to look at
I just purchased the Shure MV7+. Does it bring much value to use the Shure RK345 Black Foam Replacement Windscreen for SM7A and SM7B Microphones instead of the one that comes with the MV7+?
Perfect timing. I was just talking about this mic as I have one, as does my podcast partner, and people ask about upgrades from Yeti that are USB or affordable. A much needed review, sir!
It’s crazy, I remember buying multiple of the Q2U for like $30 a piece back in the day. I think in 2018. Crazy that it goes for $70 now and is still a relatively good deal.
I hear it. I also listened to several people's reviews after this one, as well as a podcast where a host uses this mic. There is a static noise present in every one of them. Almost sounds like a ground isolation issue. Very interesting piece of tech. The denoiser does a really great job, and I love how it stores settings inside of the microphone itself.
Your level of professionalism in ensuring your reviews are accurate and going above and beyond to even buy a second microphone to do so is worthy of our respect and admiration. Thank you Bandrew.
You been working out bro? I've been watching you for years and you're looking like you dropped some LB's. That and your sexy voice somehow tickles my ears in a slightly different way now. IDK, maybe I'm imagining things
These are completely different microphones 😅 But let me first ask you a few questions: Are you aware of the differences between a dynamic and a condenser microphone? For what would you use them, and how is your environment?
@@justyuriforever Exactly. I have owned a RODE Podcaster mic for 6+ years. Eventually, I decided to try something new. I need a mic for podcasting. Both of these microphones have their pros and cons for me.
Hello, is it possible to record good takes of violin and other acoustic instruments with this MV7+? Also, could you share what shutter speed/ISO do you use? amazing video, you are a truly expert on this!! Congratulations, you got a new viewer :)
I do like the plosive popper feature and the reverb. I have the mv7 and it is nice to have the usb option but it sounds good on the volt 76 interface. Noise rejection is very good and I don''t have to do any post processing on the audio to get pretty good sound.
upgraded from a tonor mic to the Mv7+, I'm happy with it. It gets the job done and I always wanted a mic by shure (I got this used and it was on sale too!). So a fraction of the price (100 bucks) so win win!
Is there a comparison of ALL these microphones in a untreated room? Supposedly, MV7+ performs better than many others microphones specifically in untreated rooms, so I would like to know if that's true.
yes, there are huge differences, and there is a huge difference between DSPs and analog processing ... so much FAIL, if you want real processing, don't use the onboard DSP's
What a ridicullously awesome review this was. This should be the standard, or at least a guide for others to structure their reviews on electronic devices on. Very thorough, no-nonsense, covers all the bases. Thanks for all of the hard work you did putting this together. Also, side note, you are a very talented musician. Enjoyed your rifts and vocals. You have clearly found your calling. Never lose sight of that.
I'm curious, as a MV7 owner/user, is that Motiv mix app available for MV7 users or is that specific to the MV7+? I can't find any walk through videos regarding it. Only thing showing up is the older Motiv app that bugs out for me every so often.
@@BandrewScott Just got home and you are right. The Motiv Mixer app literally does nothing for the MV7 except being able to record from it. The only option is the gain. Useless program for me so it goes bye bye off my computer.
Can you make a test or comparison video with us Windows users in mind, i.e. show where and how much you adjust those "gain, post poost, etc." settings? In your videos, it's hard to distinguish 100 or 400 euro microphones from each other. They sound so similar. When I look at the Levels tab in my Windows, there are two items volume and power increase. I've had to "shout" at the USB microphones I've tried, and if you raise the controls to their pins again, the microphone makes a lot of noise when you don't talk to it.
Love the insightful review as always - and appreciate you going the extra mile! I snagged this mic after using the original MV7 for the last couple years, and I absolutely love the way it sounds. Interestingly, I found that the auto gain significantly hurts the audio quality - it made the audio sound weak. When I toggled that off, the sound improved drastically. Just a word to the wise for anyone considering buying the MV7+
Hello Bandrew! Hope you're doing well. I'd like to ask you something regarding the upgrade of audio gears. I've been using the Maono-USB Microphone for around 5 years and have been looking forward to upgrade to the "Rode NT1 Signature Series" for my home studio solo vocal recordings. But I'm confused about the type of interface I should gear into. I'm on the hunt for a budget-friendly audio interface that offers low background noise while complementing the capabilities of the NT1. Which one would you recommend buying- Universal Audio Volt 1, Behringer Um2, Rode Ai1, Focusrite Scarlett 4th gen, or Steinberg UR12? I'm going to be using it with my PC, so which one among these would you recommend buying? THANK YOU
Thank you for the review. I did buy it and I hope it works out for what I need it for but mainly because I can do the USB for the road or the XLR when I'm at home in the studio. I don't have a mixer/interface yet so I'm going to have to wait to use the XLR. I'm looking for more of a radio sound for a certain application so I'm sure I'll need to get the interface before the end of June.
I'd grab a cheap windscreen, SM58 type and cut it very close to where the rounded end becomes uniform. Stuff that up the windscreen to leave just a little airbreak. Dual filter. That should help.
Great Review, i have some question, you have test two mics, can i conect this mics in a USB Hub?, cam i record with 4 at a time?, can you make that test?, can i use the mv7+ whitout USB connection only XLR?
Been watching a lot of your videos lately. You are the man, man. Thanks a ton for what you're doing. Do you know if you'd be able to review the WA-CX12 sometime?
This is a bummer. As a professional podcaster with MV7s in the arsenal, I've had to have them replaced multiple times by Shure due to the mini-USB port breaking. My hosts travel with the mics often, which creates more wear and tear. Because of that, I was excited to hear Shure had replaced that with a USB-C port, which I assumed would be sturdier. Apparently, it's still pretty flimsy, and the review makes it sound like we'd be giving up some audio quality in the process. Dammit! But a million thanks for the amazing work you do on these reviews!
Doobalee DID!!! Love how i have notifications on and yet dont get notified when one of these drops... yay YT! Got some resonance around the 700 area there huh? The music test is always the star of the show. Still cant wait for that album to drop. Balto would be proud!
Fantastic review. The star of this was the Earthworks mic which sounded great. Then the Fifine sounded good for the koney. The big comparison is to the Rode Podemic USB which sounded okay but i could hear alot of emphasis on the esses.
I just wanted to tell you how incredibly valuable your videos are. You've already saved me a lot of money with what I consider to be the best and most honest tests. But you also cost me a lot of money because of the "want-to-have" effect. 😆 But not the MV7. Greetings from Germany
Love your reviews, probably one of the best reviewers I've seen, if not the best. You keep things concise, simple, and digestable without yammering on about useless information to pad time. I've watched your vids for the MV7, the SM7b, and SM58 as I'm looking for a mic to reduce the background noise as much as possible. Currently in a situation where I am in an open room next to the living room with a tv going all day, and have found some difficulty elimating that noise. Suggestions? Sound treatment, doors, and other room changes just aren't feasable.
Wait a second... are you saying that the DSP settings that get saved on the mic (lets say reverb) using the USB connection... later will not be present if the mic gets connect to a computer via a audio interface and the XLR connection? That makes no sense to me. Or did you mean USB will be later needed IF FURTHER tweaking is desired?
None of the fancy stuff works via XLR. It just becomes a normal, anolog microphone via XLR. If you plan to connect the MV7+ via XLR, you may as well save some money and get the MV7x instead.
hi podcastage i was just wondering what micraphone i should get as i want to have a good but mainly clear and similar to real life sound and not anything to expensive i was wondering what mic you would suggest
