Get up close and personal with an SM58, and the sound gets all warm and deep. It’s called ‘proximity effect’. In this video, Shure’s Chad Wiggins explains that this is perfectly normal - and how a savvy singer can use it creatively.

I've had one of these for about 5 years. One of the best pieces of musical equipment I've ever bought. I highly recommend it.

CHERIZKO VEVO Loom up the Mad World cover on my channel. I used it for that. Plus I have 2 rap songs (meant to be funny) that I used it for also. I run it through a Peavey PV10 USB.

I wouldn’t say that the proximity effect is “a good thing” or “a bad thing” for that matter. It’s just a characteristic of the tool. Knowing how to use it is “a good thing” but that’s just my opinion.

The SM58 has a totally shocking proximity effect when used close up and personal as many insist on doing on stage. I've often mused about making an anti-SM58 filter to try to cancel it. Proximity effect is basicaly bass boost as a result of the physics of a cardioid polar pattern.

The proximity effect is a beautiful thing in the studio. You can control the equalization easier, right at the source. Want more lows? Move the mic closer. Too much low? You guessed it.🤙🏼

I found this very useful. What I don’t really understand is that why vocalists in the 60s ( yes I’m that old) used to hold the mile at chest level, and they sounded fabulous. Then in the 79s vocalists started nearly fellating the microphone and frankly they didn’t sound quite as good. Am I missing something?

Seriously considering recording the vocals for our upcoming album using a 58. I'm finding the condensor is making the voice to present in the overall mix, thinking it might be nice to work with a less frequency respponsive mic. On that note, I think proximity effect is going to make this a more challenging task, on account of that desired consistency we often have for an album.
@totallyfrozen
@totallyfrozen 4 года назад
The Chimney Swifts You should be able to control the presence of the condenser mic through EQ, gain/volume levels, and/or compression. If you want to avoid proximity effect, find the sweet spot for the mic and and stay there while you sing. You could hang a tennis ball from the ceiling at the right spot so that you’re in exactly the right spot when the tennis ball touches your forehead. Then just stand where the tennis ball touches your forehead and sing the song. You could put tape on the floor too, but that won’t keep your head still. It may force you to look down at the floor while you’re signing too. You may have other ideas too. It all depends on what you’re willing to do to get the right sound.

Would a compressor between the mic and mixing desk be helpful in preventing unwanted proximity effect for live performances, or would other crazy things happen?
@totallyfrozen

A compressor would not help that. A compressor controls volume, not frequencies.

Hi! when a singer changes the proximity when singing loud, and pulling the mic back, is the singer making the mic act like a natural compressor (live or studio situation)?
@shure
@shure 6 лет назад
Essentially the singer is lowering the intensity of the sound arriving at the mic by moving the mic farther away. Some performers may also do this for dramatic effect.
@pasoundman
@pasoundman 3 года назад
no, it's not a compressor.
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 7 месяцев назад
Not really but the premise is the same. Singers pull the mic back when they belt loudly so there isn't a huge increase in intensity and volume between the milder singing and loud belting (especially where sharper, higher frequencies are concerned).
@veronicagorosito187
@veronicagorosito187 7 месяцев назад
@@jasonbodden8816 Ah ok, yes that's what I mean when saying it's a compressor-like technique, because it prevents to blow up the mic pre's.

Hey shure, why is the audio so bad on this video?
@totallyfrozen
@totallyfrozen 4 года назад
Bevan Ward Because they weren’t recording this in an acoustically dead space and they used a noise gate. Noise gates sound bad because when the signal is strong, all the reverb, etc. gets through then when the signal drops the gate cuts it off. The result is that when the signal comes through (like their speech) a weird hiss that sounds a lot like a snare drum rattling comes through and can be heard at the tail end of the signal as the gate closes.

To which part of the video are you referring? The intro music (is it mono?) the host? (wearing a clip on lav mic) The guy in the bowling shirt? (his audio changes between a clip on lav mic and the wired mic that he's demonstrating.) Overall I think the audio is pretty good for what the video is trying to show although there IS a pretty big difference in tone between the host and bowling guy. It almost sounds like bowling guy is being caught by a somewhat distant camera mic rather than the lav pinned to his shirt.

Crazy mic for the price 😁 if there was a version that implemented some stupid RGB lights & an edgy design it would probably become bigger than the Blue Snowball back in the day :3 (Not saying this mic isn't extremely popular, just talking about the "gaming/streaming" space)

Hello! All of our wireless systems offer an SM58 transmitter. You can view our wireless options here: www.shure.com/en-US/products/wireless-systems If you're asking about making an existing wired SM58 wireless, you would need a wireless system with a plug-on transmitter. We do not currently make a system like this.

The SM58 is great value but the Beta 58 sounds even better for slightly more money. The proximity effect is normal for a directional microphone and is not a fault of the SM58. It can be used creatively but most times I’m using EQ to counteract the bass boost for a more natural sound.

Space Singer That’s the fault of the vocalist. Proximity effect is a tool that a vocalist has to learn how to use. For that matter, the same could be said of compression, EQ, Autotune, noise gait, etc.

Why don't you introduce a serial number to counter the fake mics in the market?
@musingsofrock
@musingsofrock Год назад
The issue is the mic has such low output that in a rock band you have to put the mic that close to get a decent volume. If you want to hear what your actual voice sounds like, sing 2-3 inches away from the mic but the bad part is that at 2-3 inches the signal is so low that it is barely audible over a loud band. So you are stuck with proximity effect. Horrible mic! Proximity effect gives that wooly sound where all the harmonics are taken out. It takes away the natural characteristic of your voice and you hear the mic more than the singer.

Proximity effect is NOT the byproduct of a 'good' cardioid microphone, it's the byproduct of ANY cardioid microphone. It is in the nature of all cardioid microphones to have this effect, dynamic or condensor. Omnidirectional microphones don't have this effect, End of story. Shure lies to you again !

I've noticed this with other mics as well. However I still love the clarity and how I'm able to play around with it whilst singing. However I would love to get a mic where I can sing whilst singing from a distance from the mic, but I'm not sure which mic is that.
