Shure SM7B vs Audio-Technica AT4040 (Rap/Pop Vocals)

The AT4040 is such a good mic, it’s a workhorse mic, it’s smooth and bold at the same time, subtractive eq your vocals properly with proper mic technique ( try rapping more towards the top of the mic rather then in the middle of the capsule) super smooth and clean, stacking vocals and doubles with this mic is insanely good aswel.

AT4040 destroyed the SM7B on the guitar. On the vocals I think the AT4040 was tracked too hot or underpowered because on 2:55 you can clearly hear it distorting, and since it's the raw track it can't be compression or other effect.

very good video, I have an at4040 and I use it for rap voices boom bap and if it is true that I am always fighting against sssss, I liked shure but if you have an alternative that knows shure better? for boom bap style rap vocals? first of all thanks.

The At 4040 is more than 400€ now while the SM7B is around 380 😢

So after years of working things out with just the mic I have I decided that I want to upgrade since I'm not getting hot signal (I don't have a Cloudlifter) Sm7b is basically industry standard these days but I happened to know that Joey Sturgis (one of the biggest metalcore producers in the world in the last 15 years) used to usually work with the AT4040 I know I've said metalcore but I actually need a mic to record lots of *clean singing vocals, not only screams Again, I don't have a Cloudlifter, so that's why I think to go with the AT4040 but afraid to make a mistake because I never had a condensor before (I do have phantom power on my audio interface that I know is necessary for condensors) , what do you guys say I should go with? *I do record scream vocals but it doesn't necessarily means that the screams have a super high output.. Most of the time the clean vocals signal is actually hotter

Perfect example of horses for courses. Singer in red has a higher, harsher voice and the SM7B is perfect to shave it off and give him a silky sound. Singer in black (terrific singer BTW) has a more midrange, nasally voice and that 4040 shaves the mid, accentuates the high, and creates color. One size does not fit all. These two mics are both great. For my mid-rangy, flat voice, the 4040 is awesome and gives so much character as well. It is not a transparent mic. The SM7B does me favors if I'm singing in falsetto. BTW, for me a high-end Neumann sounds raspy and low in character next to 4040. The two mics you have demoed here are both absolutely fantastic mics and you can get both for a reasonable price.

sm7b in my opinion sound more compressed and or has less high up. I did enjoy the at4040 but I prefer the crisp sound of the sm7b. Thank you for making this video.

you should have used the output gain on the 610 to add the gain to the Shure SM7B because using the drive knob also makes it a darker sound so the raw comparison isnt 100% in my opinion I believe the SM7b could have been a bit brighter

For rap, which microphone would work best, At 4040 or Neumann tlm 103 ? (Your opinion) 🙂

this got damn video is the shit....ive ran the song back a hundred times obviously trying to find the difference......its wierd......the at4040 and the shure handle the black dudes vocals rather well but when the white dude comes in hes a clear improvement on the shure....that may be about understanding range and just being a little too loud for the mic but regardless......shure sm7b handled the hi's......but yo......"what mic....ro...phone do u liiiiiiiiiiiiike" ....that shit is gonna sound good on ANY mic!!!! this is my personal request to ask yall to upload that song so i can buy it or i am def gonna just rip it from this youtube video so i can tear it all down...fuck it all up...blow it by the pound yea!!!

Just as I suspected. You can hear the microphone distorting or the gain is too high. Seeing the SM7B can take far far more in volume then you obviously set the gain too high. When Horizon sings across the room you can hear he sounds normal and not the overloading sound. I've noticed this in a few of your videos now. Which is weird cause the mix sounds good. Turn the gain down or get new mics as they are defective or replace whatever component is distorting because it's defective. I truly doubt it's the mics or the equipment though. So it's more than likely a gain issue. Also if it is you need to remake all you videos as I'm sure they all have the clipping in them seeing how at least 3 have it. You can't compare anything if it's clipping and that's a fact. You should be recording with at least 6dbs of headroom not if 10dbs. You're loudest sounds should be 6dbs down from max output which is 0db not plus 4db or plus 10dbs which some soundboards and audio equipment lets you push things to. Idk why others can't hear the clipping? I don't have that good of ears. Hope this helps or someone can explain what I'm hearing. I don't hear it on over videos. I like some of your jams. Peace
