Shutterstock reveal their new confusing 2020 royalty structure

Shutterstock just changed its earnings structure for Stock photo and footage contributors with the new model taking effect on June 1st, 2020, only 5 days after the announcement.
Contributors are furious, understandably. What information do we have so far to understand these changes? What are my views on the new royalty structure?

Last 5 sales 0.90usd instead of 1,65usd being at level 4. Almost 50% less than before, this is the fact, you don't have to wait one month to know the reality!

Yeah, in the first few days of June, my income has been down as well. I believe it's too soon to tell so I'm waiting for more stats to come in before making a decision.

Happy New Year! I'm estimating Level 1 in Jan 2021, Level 2 in Feb, Level 3 in mid Mar and Level 4 from mid May. I hope to add 600 photos to my portfolio in 2021.

Hey! Love the video! I'm your size of contributor (on level 5) and so far my earnings dropped but not as drastically as I thought. But the way they have introduced the change is questionable to say at least. But in the end I totally agree with you that its better to wait and see what is going to happen.

I'm a newbie and have some questions: 1- can I price my images or it is done by Shutterstock (they have a flat rate for images)? 2- can images be sold individually or they can just be sold as part of a subscription? I'm asking these questions because I didn't understand the subscription model.

Hi David, yeah, I get it... Stock photography is getting very competitive and small royalties don't help people who are getting started :( I'll try to come up with more tips and strategies for people who want to use it as a tool to work on their photography.

i wonder if they should at least give us december sales or the previous years sales as a start in january rather than starting completely at zero january the first. anything is better than what i see of this new system.

According to comment on the SS forum there will be a minimum of 10 cents per sale. Not very good, but at least a tad better than iStock, for now.

I'm glad to hear that! I think setting a minimum is a great idea. I had a flash yesterday and I wouldn't be surprised if they started a new bigger subscription plan (ex: 1500 images a month) and if they did, it would be risky to get 2 cent commission so I'm seriously hoping for a minimum commission. Thanks for posting :)
