STORYLINE:
An astronaut collapsed twice Friday, a day after she returned to Earth in the shuttle Atlantis, and officials attributed her wobbles to the adjustment from 12 days at zero gravity.
Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper left the welcome-home ceremony at the hangar at Ellington Field, in Houston, Texas, but was not taken to a hospital.
NASA officials and her husband Glenn Piper both said she was doing fine.
Piper blamed his wife's collapse on the combination of effects from her recent return, a relatively warm hangar and the excitement of the ceremony.
Piper, the fifth of the six astronauts to speak, appeared to be confused before her legs buckled during her address.
NASA officials and crew members braced her and lowered her to the ground. She stood up again, and the crowd applauded.
"Boy, if that's not a little embarrassing," she said.
After speaking for another 30 seconds or so, she again appeared confused and gripped the podium before starting to collapse. Fellow crew members stepped to her side and lowered her to the floor.
Two NASA officials then helped her leave through a side door, and she was allowed to return home by early afternoon, according to Smith Johnston, the crew's flight surgeon, who was at Piper's side when she fell.
Astronauts typically lose 10 percent to 14 percent of their blood volume while in space, usually regaining it in a day or two, Johnston said.
The Atlantis crew returned to Earth on Thursday after performing the first construction work on the International Space Station since the Columbia disaster three-and-a-half years ago.
They performed three gruelling spacewalks to hook up a seventeen-and-a-half-ton addition, which included a giant set of electricity-producing solar panels.
Piper, 43, of St. Paul, Minnesota, is a US Navy Commander and was a mission specialist and cosmic electrician aboard the shuttle.
She carried out two of the spacewalks, joining an elite club of only six other US women and a single Russian woman who have walked in space.

One in five shuttle astronauts experiences dizziness and even fainting upon returning to Earth. This is because the fluid shifts in their bodies when they feel gravity once again, and this can lower their blood pressure. To prevent the problems, they drink a lot of water and broth just before coming back into the atmosphere.

Imagine suddenly having to support your own body weight after an extended period of not having to even think about it. It must be a hell of a drag, like running a race with iron boots on. Several astronauts have spoken about the difficulties of readjusting to Earth's gravity after returning from lengthy missions, my favourite is the story from one who said that he would often drop cups and other items because he had got used to just letting them go in space. He also mentioned that after starting to move in a direction he would just stop because he was so used to momentum keeping him moving.

Sure. But a space shuttle mission only lasted 1 - 2 weeks. Imagine what it must be like after months on ISS, Tiangong-2 or MIR, when it still existed!
@MartinFinnerup
@MartinFinnerup 3 года назад
Minor correction: It was likely less about supporting her weight, and more about the long term effects of microgravity on her cardio-vascular system. Her heart is no longer used to pumping blood against gravity, so it needs time to readjust.

Mike G Usually the reason for fainting is blood loss
@Aetherian1
@Aetherian1 2 года назад
Interestingly, while the amount of blood in an astronaut's body does fall by about 20% in space, that's not the main reason for this. Being in low gravity for that long caused her heart to shrink and weaken. This means that not only does she have less actual blood volume decreasing blood pressure, her heart is capable of generating even less pressure than normal too, so when she returns to regular Earth gravity her heart has effectively grown so lazy it can't supply her brain, similar to how fighter pilots faint in extremely high Gs. Ironically, it's not the physical stress on her body, but chronic lack of it, that caused this.

Then, a space station between Earth and Mars and then a base on Mars and we can refuel at the station between Earth and Mars and have a ship that stays in space and can run its engines for long periods and refuel between destinations so it doesn’t take months but weeks to get to Mars. and and and.... oh, we kinda need.. ya know, “money” for all that, huh? @Michael-mh2tw

Not entirely true, astronauts exercise to keep muscles capable; it's blood cell count that drops, so it's 'tiredness' in a way - not actually tired, but not enough oxygen getting to the muscles and the brain, made worse by gravity acting to pull blood to lower parts of the body.

I think it has to do with the heart not pumping enough blood to the brain. Usually your body pushes blood up with higher force to counteract gravity pulling it down. This is why astronauts will have their face red and swollen on the first week; their body is still pumping blood to the head with greater force even with no gravity. The reverse happens when they land; the body has learned _not_ to counteract gravity so the blood stays in your legs and feet. When standing the brain isn't getting all the blood it needs. After a couple weeks an astronaut shouldn't faint while standing up, although it'll still be difficult to stand for long due to bone and muscle loss.

Damn right it is! That's our man from Sarnia, ON, Canada. Chris and I went to the same elementary school (King George VI), except he was there way before me. When he was home on leave he would take time out of his day to come see us and sing us songs with his guitar (in the gym). Our school motto was, "The Sky is Not the Limit", since he went to space! And our local airport is also named after him. An all around great guy and we are all very proud of him.

They're doing so to show respect that she's trying her best despite the hardship's she's going through reacclimating to gravity. It's no different than applauding someone who's trying their damnedest to win a race but collapses from exhaustion. They're applauding her just TRYING to do it to the best of her ability, which is very much admirable.
