when it comes to first aid triage, the guy making no noise at all is a bigger priority than the guy who is concious and shouting about how much it hurts. you can tell the concious one what to do to stabilise himself WHILE working on the unconcious patient.

Damn right. Was in a car accident a couple years ago as a passenger, the driver, who caused the accident, broke his arm and was screaming bloody murder, meanwhile I was sitting there barely conscious with what turned out to be a concussion and internal bleeding. Paramedics showed up and saw to him first, I was left there for like 10 minutes without anyone actually doing anything. When we got to the hospital, a doctor apparently ripped into them in front of everyone when they explained.

I had a fire brigade course late last year. The instructor told me that there was an incident in a car crash where the woman had her face MANGLED, down to an eye hanging on just by the nerve and muscles. And she was _still_ less priority than the husband, who was quiet and pale. Precisely because of internal bleeding.

And to add to that, don't try to be a hero if you don't know what the fuck you are doing. Needless injury and death occurs when people with genuine intentions make a situation worse, like removing someone from car because they don't know the difference between steam and smoke.

My brother learned the hard way that someone can be moving and appear healthy after an accident, but later die because the adrenalin wears off. Also yeah, never move someone that is not in immediate danger. Only move them in case of risk of fire, but in most case, don't move them.

I remember when I broke my back I passed out because I couldn't catch my breath. My body relaxed a bit after I passed out and I came to shortly after, and eventually sat up with two crushed vertebrae in my back. I knew something was very wrong but couldn't figure out what it was. Ski patrol put a backboard on me and laid me down very carefully. It wasn't until about an hour after the crash in the ambulance that I knew I'd hurt my back. 30 minutes later I asked the EMT to give me some painkillers because it REALLY started to hurt. Adrenaline is crazy. I've hurt myself a number of times skiing and riding bikes and MX. Usually for me 30 minutes pass and then I have a better idea of how bad it is. When I did my back in I really had no idea how back it was until I saw the xrays. I remember telling the doctor that showed them to me that it's crazy I was able to sit up with all that damage. As expected, he responded with, "YOU DID WHAT!?!" I was unbelievably lucky to not be paralyzed.

@@simpledj509chromo7 Bro, your guardian angel used all of his power to save your spinal cord that day. But yeah, adrenalin is a hell of a painkiller, i recently had the displeasure to experience it when my car's clutch decided to go full C4 on me while i was on a highway. I got shrapnel in my legs (nothing serious) but the shock and adrenalin made it that i had time to park the car, call a wrecker, call my parents, and wait 30 minute until the wrecker arrived, and he told me i was bleeding profusely from my right leg. Like i said, nothing serious, but the pain came instantly, and i had to be transported by emergency crews to stop the bleeding, and get 32 stitches in total.

@@simpledj509chromo7 yeah. i broke my arm in a bike accident and i actually didnt feel that much pain. they even didnt need to give me painkillers until after the surgery, when they put a piece of metal. i guess it didnt hurt that much beacause it was a clean "cut" after all. i could move my fingers normally even while my arm was brocken. also, i broke my upper arm almost in the middle. it feels so wierd having the arm be kinda detach, while holding together by skin and muscle. another thing i think affected my pain is probably that it was too much that i just didnt register it, at least i want to think that. the doctor said they where surprised of how i could stay that calm and didnt complain at all about the pain. damn. i just wrote a lot of random stuff. TLDR; adrenalin is very crazy and when i broke my arm i didnt really register the pain untill after i woke up from my surgery the day after(the surgery was the day after the accident, like 16 hours after the accident).

At 1:18:40, Lily talks about not being able to cut her toxic grandma out of her life "because family." While she has her own beliefs about it (and that's fine), If you're in a situation like that, know that the toxicity that she described is a *completely* valid reason to cut someone out of your life; whether they're your family or not. It is your life and you get to decide who is - or isn't - a part of it.

Was having this discussion with my Mother about some family drama, basically one of my relatives staking claim to my Grandmothers will.. My Grandmother who is still alive btw harassing her about her Will as if she was already dead, her will is no ones business except my Grandmother and her lawyer and this went on for months. It was disgusting, I just cut all ties to this person as if they never existed while my Mother continues to try and stay connected to them, she wastes so much energy and happiness "Because they are family". People you cannot abide, or who do things you find reprehensible simply should not be a part of your life, doesn't matter who they are. You have that choice, it's not as difficult as people think and you will be happier for it.

When Lily is talking about how it's a good thing, if someone feels the pain right when the injury happens, I can confirm this. I have nerve damage along my brain stem and upper spinal cord after a childhood accident. This has left me with a myriad of nerve and sensory issues, but the main one is my ability to feel pain. Usually, at least once a month, I'll get some sort of injury that would leave another person screaming in pain. But I don't feel any pain. At all. So i don't even know that I've gotten injured! I have ended up in the emergency room multiple times because of this. Pain tells you that you are injured, and it keeps you from injuring yourself further (because you don't want the injury to hurt). Without feeling pain, you could exacerbate a mediocre injury to the point that it becomes life-changing or even life-threatening. I have put my entire hand straight into the heart of a roaring fire, and thankfully, my mother yanked me away before I could get anything worse than second-degree burns. But I didn't feel any pain. I could feel how hot the fire was, but it didn't hurt. If my mother had not been there, I probably would have lost my hand. I've fallen head first off of a bridge and ended up exposing my entire kneecap. I didn't even realize I was injured until I stood up, and my shoe literally splashed from how much of my blood had flooded it. Even as I climbed out of the dead creek and got back up to the bridge, I felt no pain. I nearly bled out that day. Tl:Dr Be happy if you can feel pain. It means there's a chance that you'll be okay.

I've always been referred to as a stick in the mud because I don't like or tolerate jokes or pranks where someone surprises you. Are there plenty of situations where you'll be fine and nobody will get hurt and it's just a harmless laugh? sure. However, it only takes one badly timed joke-scare to severely injure or even kill someone, like that woman who swung a hammer at her husbands head because he scared her with a mask while she was putting up a picture frame. Thankfully she missed, but it was a very close thing. Even when you think you're being careful, there's always room for error and if you can prevent a terrible thing from happening (which would be your fault anyway) why wouldn't you just choose prevention instead of playing russian roulette.

10:07 There is a caveat to that with motorcycles and racing helmets. You can remove the helmet if A) there are emergency pull cheek pads and B) the rider/driver isn't breathing, because you need access to their nose and mouth to provide CPR. Also, you can move a patient of any type of injury if there is a serious mortal threat immediately around them. Otherwise, yeah, call the pros and keep talking to the patient to keep them alert and conscious.
@Charley-ju6yg
@Charley-ju6yg 4 месяца назад
Exactly! It's kinda funny how rare it is for people to not know to let the helmet stay on if possible, considering there are records all the way back in medieval times of people dying as a result, because the helmet was keeping everything together. Hell, there's probably records dating way back before that It's like one of the oldest known first aid things in history
@wildwolfdante
@wildwolfdante 3 месяца назад
Yup, also when Iearnt first aid for my driver's licence they also taught us that removing the helmet should be a two man procedure where one keeps the neck stable and the other removes it carefully.
@simpledj509chromo7
@simpledj509chromo7 3 месяца назад
Recently CPR training classes that I have taken have mostly abandoned breaths and focused on chest compressions as long as the airway is not blocked. Most cheek pads on quality helmets are secured with button snaps or velcro to allow them to be washed and can be somewhat easily removed with the helmet in place using something like a file on a multitool or a decent pair of safety shears (please keep sharp objects like knives away from unconscious people that are knocked out due to a traumatic accident). Removing the cheek pads may allow for the helmet to be gently moved but kept on if severe head trauma is suspected and allow for more free movement of the lower jaw and gain access to the mouth. If that helmet is fucking wrecked I'm probably leaving it alone until the pros show up. A couple light chest compressions with a finger over the mouth will tell you what you need to know whether proceeding with compressions will be worthwhile or not. I'd hate to pull a helmet and have someone's skull come apart. Stay safe out there everyone.

A jack stand, in the proper locations, makes it very difficult to drop the vehicle/object on you. And use wooden blocks too, like behind the tires on the ground so it can't roll back if you're only bringing up the front or back side.

speaking about annoying your pets a little bit to desensitize them to it so they don’t hurt you - keepers at zoos will train some animals to do “tricks” that actually lets them check on the animals health without any animals or keepers being harmed (if it’s a good zoo). things like “smiling” to check their teeth and gums, teaching them to raise their feet so they can be checked for problems. it comes in handy and keeps everybody safe, and can also be applied to pets. it doesn’t work for EVERY animal of course but it can be super helpful

Regarding Lily's comment on being nervous over hurting a dog and it just lunging at her, I work in the veterinary field and I'd say you have a roughly 10% chance of getting attacked by any dog, though there's a lot of if then's for that, much like a flow chart of bite scratch. If small dog that chance is closer to 20, if it's a poorly bred incest breed (looking at you poodles) it's 15-25 depending on size (smaller is worse), if it's on meds for a surgery and recovering its like 25, and if it has any medical nureo problem it's 50 50. It gets much mor granular, but you get my point. Cats on the other hand are closer to a 75% chance, flat out. Size rule of larger equals nicer does apply though.

Regarding gore/liveleak videos: There was a period, I think it was when 9gag was going hard against any nudity, where NSFW was instead flooded with videos of people dying, during that time, as long as you had an account, you would, unanounced, just witness suicide videos. There was one where someone touched and grounded a cable on an electricity pylon, and then fell a solid 20 meters. And instead of calling anyone for help, the person filming ran straight up to the dead body and zoomed in on it. "Not moving someone" can actually be harmful in quite some situations. you gotta be very careful when moving someone after an accident, the risk of a broken neck or back and permenantly paralysing them is very real. thats why emergency paramedics have spinal boards, for strapping the patient down so their neck and back wont move until they get to the hospital.

@@AnikaJarlsdottr Good and all. If the person is responsive. But if they are not, and they vomit lying down, and they are not in a stable position, they literally choke on their vomit. To get your license here, you have to take a first aid course, and putting someone into a stable position is one of the core techniques you have to learn to be allowed to drive. So, again, if they are responsive, you shouldnt move them, and you should even discourage them from moving, but if they are unresponsive you have to take a risk and put them in a stable position. You are also legally obligated to lend first aid to any person involved in an accident, so not moving them, not performing cpr, not calling an ambulance is considered a felony.

@@YTNFSCC that's a myth actually in MOST instances. I was a licensed first responder and emt-b for over 8 years and there needs to be an established duty to act, like a call from dispatch or a request from an actual person. Even then you need permission to do the work. With some exceptions an injured person can still say no and I have had to call back in service "patient refused care" many times. But "failure to render aid" is seldom used because even the law recognizes that a layperson cannot be expected to know how to give treatment and even with certification a medic on a day of can't be expected to fully do their job without their equipment. Here is the law that requires someone trying to get a license to get first aid education: "Whoever is attempting to gain their drivers license needs to participate in a first aid course spanning at least 9 units at 45 minutes each. Some of the advice Lily gives in here about first aid are only... SOMEWHAT correct. For one, about helmet removal; if you DON'T know how to do it safely/correctly, then don't. However, in first aid classes, mandatory as they are for a driver's license where I live, they teach you that removing the helmet is CRUCIAL in performing first aid - obviously, if you aren't gonna perform first aid because you can't recall how to, then don't do a damn thing, but it's important. There are two people necessary for removing a helmet, at least a motorcycle helmet. One person supports the neck and head, while the other one undoes the straps and slowly and steadily takes the helmet off. This way, you do not disturb any potentially misplaced vertebrae in the neck and you can proceed with CPR and the like - the person who removed the helmet uses their thighs as a pillow to keep the head level while the other one now proceeds to check if the person is breathing and potentially choking on something or if they have anything in their mouth. If they are breathing, here is probably an even harder thing to do - you have to flip them on their side while, again, making sure to move the neck as little as possible. All the while someone has ideally already called the ambulance, and you KNOW people might not do it unless told so before everything you'd ideally single someone out from the crowd, yell at them "YOU. CALL THE AMBULANCE" and do the same for whoever you wanna pick to help with helmet removal, because people, no matter how good at first aid, just won't voluntarily approach to help, most likely due to fear of screwing up - but you NEED someone to help you securely help the victim. Someone who doesn't know what they're doing is better than nobody if you can correctly instruct them. There's only one problem with helmet removal that our instructor told us about - there is a small chance, if the helmet didn't do it's job, that the person inside had their skull cracked open and their head might just... fall apart like a cracked egg when you remove the helmet. However, it's a risk you have to take since that kind of person is pretty much dead anyway and the medics can't really save them. You have to hope this HASN'T happened and that you can still help. Not wanting to help because of this, because they might already be dead, is just gonna increase the chances that they really will die.

Lily, Weeping Angels is Doctor Who and Skinwalkers/Wendigos are from nearly every Native American supernatural beliefs. Skinwalkers are literally hundreds of years old, possibly a couple thousand years old. That pants below your ass thing is still very common here in America, it's hideous. It's almost entirely due to rap culture, without most of the people even knowing where it came from. Won't go into it cause it's slightly NSFW, but it's not what they think and they'd be ashamed if they found out from a source other than a white boy from the outside.

Can we actually talk about Ikea though? Prices have gone up, build quality is down, and their instructions here in the US are GARBAGE now. I reluctantly paid $600 for a bed frame with storage drawers and it's shit. I'm handy so I've made it work, but most people don't have a garage full of tools to fix this garbage. I'm no longer shopping at Ikea. Edit: That bed frame was the first thing I've bought from Ikea in about a decade. The quality difference was surprising. Hardwood hand built is furniture is still very pricey, but I'll save my money and buy stuff that lasts in the future. I work too hard to spend my money on junk. But the good quality stuff can be very expensive.

It saddens me to no end that the Lathe, Helmet, Excavator, the truck videos, and escalator ones are so well known. Plus having had to assist a few motorcycle wrecks I will actively hold a biker down and tell them to not move and don't touch your helmet. Broken necks or even partially severed but not yet disconnected are sadly common. A lot of these fail videos are a sick combination of annoying, rage inducing, and horror.

on some motocycle helmets you can even open the chin bar, so the injured can breath free, you can reach the mouth if something got stuck and he can throw up and not drown in it. but the helmet removing thing is highly debated. im glad folding chinbars are becoming a norm in my area.

Lillys comment about Ikea's prices with assembly being more expensive than a "luxury" furniture store is just straight up wrong. My brother works at a real "luxury" furniture maker/store and their prices are insane. At that store their cheapest furniture starts at about 500 euro/dollar range and the more expensive stuff is easily 10x that.

I would argue that sometimes, you SHOULD move someone after an accident, mainly to either get to someone with worse injuries that need the IMMEDIATE help, or because the place where they are is dangerous. Example : on a highway road with cars possibly coming towards them at very high speed. YES, there are risks to doing it, but if the person is likely to die if not moved, then you GOTTA.
