SIADH Treatment and Nursing Interventions | Nursing School Lecture
In this video we're walking through the nursing treatment and interventions of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, aka SIADH. Now with SIADH, there is too much antidiuretic hormone being released, which tells the kidneys to hold onto water. This excess water dilutes the sodium levels making them decrease. So all of these nursing interventions really do have something to do with either fixing or tracking fluid volume or their sodium level.
SIADH Nursing Interventions:
Neurological Assessment and monitoring: Increased intracranial pressure and seizures can happen because SIADH keeps the body retaining too much water, there can be too much fluid shifting into the neurological system, along with a decrease in sodium because it's so diluted, from all the excess water. Monitor for symptoms such as headaches, confusion, vomiting, weakness, lethargy, and other mental status changes.
Fluid Volume Status: Weight gain, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and a bounding pulse, decreased urine output, concentrated urine, GI disturbances, decreased deep tendon reflexes, neurological or mental status changes, low body temperature.
Monitor Sodium Levels: Now since there is excess ADH being secreted, and the fluid volume is increased, we know that the sodium level is diluted from all the extra fluid, or decreased.
Monitor Intake and Output: Accurately measure and recording their intake and output to track their fluid.
Medications: The doctor might prescribe fluids or other medications, such as diuretics to help the kidneys get rid of some of the fluid, and possibly IV fluids such as hypertonic or isotonic solutions.
Education: You'll need to educate them on the purpose of this, the fluid restriction parameters that the doctor has ordered, and encourage them to adhere to it.
I hope this video helped clear some of these nursing interventions and treatments for SIADH up for you. You are doing awesome, friend!

Hi Christina👋🏻 actually i study pharmacy not nursing but i really enjoy your videos they are super special and cheerful , every time i watch you i take a lot of notes to help me while studying pharmacology bc i suffer a lot with it ,,, but i wonder if i bought the Davis book ( Davis drug guide for nurse )would it be helpful for me as a pharmacist or it’s just helpful for nurses (i hope it can help me bc iam so lost 😞) FYI i bought the lippncott pharmacology book but i really suffer studying it …. i liked the davis book bc it’s simple and give the most important info directly and that’s the way my brain can get it

Lida H, we cannot speak to your pharmacology courses because we have not experienced them, but our best advice would be to reach out to another student who has taken the courses you are taking and ask them what their best advice is on this. You are doing awesome, friend!
