The original source of inspiration and meaning behind the song and video is irrelevant: we can only interpret it from our own point of view. In my opinion, it's about facing your demons and whatever is chasing you. Nobody walks through this life without suffering the slings and arrows that test our resolve as human beings.

Has anyone else noticed in the beginning, only a single wolf was chasing the guy on the motorcycle, but when we see him again later, a lot more are chasing him. And then, at the end, there's a whole horde behind them. Almost like it's saying that running from your problems instead of facing them only creates new problems and makes things worse in the long run.

My favourite part is where the girl's initial reaction to the wolf is to just fucking smack it round the face with her skateboard

Ik everyone under the sun has talked about the symbolism of addiction with each character but I really enjoy how each character reacts to the wolf and the details you can derive from their reactions. how the glasses guy who a lot of people think he's an alcoholic but I don't think people ever really say that the coin he has is likely a sobriety chip, the way he examines it and hands it away after getting that drink makes it feel very much like it is him falling back into the addiction rather than it being a constant, and his reaction to the wolf reflects that as he runs out of fear of his addiction returning. the girl initially reacts with some fight, but after seeing it has no effect resorts to running, which could give the idea that she's tried to quit before and failed, ultimately choosing to run from the problem rather than stand ground and face it. even though we don't really see the reaction of the biker (probably because with his addiction theorized to be thrill seeking and speeding it's likely the wolf just showed up while he was riding and he saw it) what you can see is how determined to outrun the problem and when finally has to confront the wolves he is visibly teared up over it but ultimately chooses to stand his ground. just love the personality of each character shining through and giving a insight as to not only their addictions but their willingness to overcome them

See, i half-disagree with the people saying that the girl breaking her skateboard over the wolf is a symbol of her fighting back. I see it more as a symbol of addiction taking everything, even what one loves to do. In her desperate swing, fueled by the fear that the wolf was there, she destroyed a healthy way to destress in outdoor activity and also a passion of hers. Skating seems very important to her, and the destruction of the skateboard could mean loss as much as it means fighting.

Just realized the line "not too young not too old." Is a reference to the fact addiction can literally hit you whenever, also I'm in a state where my flesh is crying out for more, thanks for helping me through

Only a masterpiece such as this could be such a banger, yet tell a story with deep lyrics and breathtaking animation. This song is the epitome of timelessness.

The creativity level behind this video is unimaginable.

I wanna add that when ever the wolves are in darkness they transform and become more monsterlike i think this represents that if you just leave your problems alone in the dark they won't get better only worse also the guy at the beginning since he keeps only running away they multiply also showing you can't run also notice how the wolf that attacks him in the front is the original wolf and he had to deal with it

Honestly, the attention to detail in this video amazes me. I've rewatched this video more times than I can count, and here's a few things I personally noticed after my rewatches: - The zoom-in to the wolf's eye at 2:10 represents an insider look into the struggles the 3 main characters face and how each of their respective addiction takes hold of them. A notable example is how the man with the glasses curls up into a ball as he clutches his head. Because of his polygon-like character model, he ends up resembling the cubes of alcohol that swirl around him, showing how he has become one with his addiction (and how the alcohol/mental turmoil is messing with his brain). - Another cool example of the "addiction" motif is the girl with the cigarette. There is special emphasis on the cig being lit, hinting at the fact it's her personal coping mechanism for whatever issue she's dealing with. We see that it's also taken hold of her, though. At 1:32, we see the wolf coming from out of the shadows. But at 1:34, when the girl looks up, all we see is the cigarette smoke right where the wolf was positioned, which is metaphorical for how the wolf is her smoking addiction incarnate and that they are both one-in-the-same. - The use of black and white goes a long way for the thematic of "the only way to solve your problems is to confront them directly". Throughout the video up until the very end, every shadow is perfectly animated to either exist alongside a character, be next to them, or be behind them as if it's following them. There are so many examples of this throughout the video, but my personal favorite is how the motorcycle man's relationship with the shadows progresses over time. When he goes through tunnels with shadows casting over him multiple times, it's metaphorical for how he's been through multiple lapses of struggle (I'm guessing mental health) and has spent his life running away from his problems alone. However, by the end of the video when he finally has friends around him who can empathize with his struggles, we see a fire (representative of his newfound confidence within himself) burning behind him, casting his own shadow in FRONT of him for the first and only time. He then actively charges in THE DIRECTION OF his shadow, finally showcasing how he's built up the courage and intent to face his problems head-on. I thought this particularly was a REALLY cool detail. Kudos to RUDO Co. and SIAMES for making this artistic masterpiece. It's so much fun to analyze and you notice a new detail with almost every rewatch. EDIT: After posting this I noticed another neat thing, which is that when the girl smashes the skateboard across the wolf's face, the wolf is startled for a bit and doesn't immediately chase after the girl. This is possibly analogous to how your hobbies can distract you from your addictions and mental turmoil, but it's not enough to keep them at bay forever.

My theory is that the third character is dealing with his own problems (he is on the highway, the bike could represent that he is doing well on his own problems because wolves can't caught him) but then he find people that need help too so he stops and help that person(first the girl and the crash the bike to the wolf that is with the other guy) but when everything seems lost or bad, he gets himself stronger so he can deal with it even if it seems impossible.

While many people (including me) are hyped about the music, i am also absolutely fascinated by the character designs, and the animation is outstanding. This is a masterpiece of a music video.

7 years, first video and it's a massive success...hella deserved, I dont even feel nostalgic yet this is STILL a banger

To me this song kinda symbolizes how serious things can get when you hold onto problems way longer than you should’ve. Then, as anticipated, turn into real problems and then you have no other choice except to face them head first and prove that you can do it.

I think that the fact that the video does not show us if they defeated the wolves is what really gives the message. This video is not a promise of "face your problems, and you will defeat them" but instead an advice that we all should try to face our problems even though we don't actually know if we will succeed by doing so. But, as everyone in the comments has said, we should help one another with our problems in order to truly be able to face them. Note that the girl at the start tried to hit her wolf, but failed and just ran away. They only were able to fight them when they were together, showing that being with other people makes your problems easier to handle.

So, I just noticed that in the video, you can clearly see there are 3 people. Which represents the head, heart, and mind. And at the end of the video, you can see there are 3 main wolves, which also may represent the head, heart, and mind. I really never thought about this from the beginning. Since all I payed attention to was the song. Now, I am just realizing these types of stuff in the video. This is just a theory.

I’ve been looking for this song for 4 years, it’s even better then I remember, and it’s animated so well, definitely one of my favorites

The Head is the Glasses dude, The Heart is the girl and The Mind is the bike guy The glasses dude escapes from stress, maybe family one (the red scene the guy grabs his head, with stress you get headaches) The Girl has a broken heart, The red scene shows her trying to grab someone, even screaming. and the Bike guy is depression, falling into the sad abyss, everything is be sad, every moment every decision, maybe that's why there is many wolves.

I only discovered this song recently and it is now my favorite song of all time, i like to think of it being about the struggles of addiction, the glasses dude is an alcoholic, the girl is smoker, and the bike dude has an addiction to living on the edge, as we can see him driving without a helmet, each time a wolf appears is when they give in to their compulsions, but even without the philosophical aspect this song is amazing and the animation is incredible

Many people have probably already said this, but I think that the wolves aren't even real. They are simply the people's problems fromes into a physical manifestation. Everybody tries to run away from their problems, one at a time, but as the wolves become an army, it symbolizes that the problems are multiplying, that running away from them isn't gonna solve them, but just make them worse. The finale also symbolizes them confronting their problems, the man getting up, screaming as he runs towards the wolves. The lyrics sound like they come from the enemy's perspective. "cuz you can run but you can't hide, I'm gonna make you mine!" is basically saying that the problems are slowly taking a toll on them with each passing second. The lyrics "I'm out of my head, of my heart, of my mind!" emphasizes that even more. Even the fact that nobody else notices that shows that it is happening only in their minds.

First time I watched this I was high on opioids and thought it was a cool song and cool animation. Second time I was fresh out of rehab and actually registered the deeper meaning and it made me cry realizing how badly disconnected I had been all that time

This song is just perfect, and the meaning behind it is just as wonderful. The guy in the beginning was already trying to run from his problems while the others were having the shock of reality that their way to scape stared to chase them, so they also ran away. The greater the charge, the greater the explosion. Also, when the wolf turns into a type of "spider" rememberd me of Kaonashi from Spirited Away. He transforms himself based on what he ate, the Wolf also looked like a spider and it seems that he ate a lot, meaning that addiction is like being in a spider web and that it makes you full but also insatiable.

it's really interesting, having rewatched and replayed this video so many times and looking at the comments a lot... a few months ago all the big theories were about addiction and fighting against addiction while now it seems like we've broadened the overall theory to emphasize how the video is about running away from / fighting against problems.

I've listened to this song again in a many years and finally the realisation of the meaning hit me. I remember that I witnessed this song only on a one million views and it introduced me to your songs in a first place. Today I realized something. Something I've probably always subconsciously known throughout the several years I've continued coming back to this video and never tiring of it. Something inevitable, and definite but also something I somehow never grasped as a fully formed thought. Anyways, here it is. My aforementioned epiphany; This is my favorite song of all time, and my favorite music video of all time. It's the all-in-one package of mastery. I've never seen something like this that has literally infinite replayability. I never tire of it. It's always amazing. Every single time I come back here. 10/10

Various people suffer because of various reasons! The wolves are a metaphor for human problems! Each of the 3 people shown in the video are suffering because of different reasons, but they are trying to escape them. Then they learn that the only way to end their suffering is to face their problems together! that's why the bike guy helps the girl and the other guy. I think this video is an allegory for how the society should work and how it shouldn't.

6 years later and I'm still obsessed with the animation and the meaning behind the lyrics and animation

From what I gather, it seems like this song is about facing your vices, or problems. We instinctively drown our sorrows in a variety of ways, be it drinking, smoking, driving, gaming, ect. Every time we choose to face away from the problem, the wolf gets stronger, and ultimately harder to escape which is one of the hardest truths of addiction.

You can't outrun your demons, but you also can't face them alone.

The destruction of the bike when taking care of the other persons problem could be symbolic of how he's giving up his easy life while attempting to help this guy. Helping others isn't easy and when he does help the other man from his wolf, his problems, it makes him vulnerable as well. This could also be shown by how he had the other girl jump on, he's taking on her burdens to try and help her *escape* (big difference) alongside him. By committing this sacrifice he no longer escapes his problems while helping others, by helping others he now has to learn how to fight his own problems.

People should be like the biker! Even though he had his problems MULTIPLYING, he still chose to help both the girl and the other guy without leaving them :)

For me, the most colorful part of the song - where the entire background is red - implies to me that it takes place inside the belly of the beast. Each of the three characters is in an infinite free fall, where they have discovered that being consumed by the wolf is not rock bottom...it is falling through rock bottom into an infinite downward spiral. Giving into their problems will not result in one bad consequence, but in an infinite chain of them, as they have finally lost their freedom to do anything but fall. It's like when someone's drug habit becomes so bad that they become homeless, or when someone's mental disorders make them unable to provide for themself, but then discovering that this wasn't the worst case scenario...it was only the beginning of a downward spiral into death. Luckily, we can tell by the fact that this is taking place inside the wolf's eye that this little scene is only taking place inside of the wolf's mind's eye...it is an expression of its desires, of what it wishes to do to its victims when it finally catches them, but that this terrible reality hasn't happened yet. When we cut back to the outside world - the monochromatic world - we are shown that the victims have not actually been caught yet. They have not yet been reduced to the figures in a free fall inside of the crimson belly of the wolf; they're still running for their lives, running from the prospect of an infinite free fall into destruction. Sometimes I think that I have been partially swallowed by the wolf, but I've kicked and thrashed my way out at the last second. I've seen glimpses into the red belly, into the particular fate that waits for me if I succumb to my problems, and despite all the scars I carry from being in its jaws and partially digested at points, I've never fallen so far that I've lost myself. I might be exhausted from running from my wolves, tired of fighting them, struggling to find ways to fight them that are actually effective - but I refuse to let them win, and if I see anyone else in the jaws of a nearby wolf, I have a habit of shoving my entire arm straight down the thing's throat and grabbing the person being swallowed. Sometimes, I get hurt while trying to yank someone else out of their own wolf, and it's especially difficult when that person has decided to surrender to the wolf and stop fighting it (leaving me to attempt to drag them out without any help from them.) Maybe it's stupid of me, but I can't help but leave myself arm-deep down a wolf's throat as I cling desperately on to people who refuse to fight the wolf themselves, or simply don't know how. It's exhausting, especially while I'm still trying to fight off the wolves eternally biting me, and it's soul-crushing, especially when those people are people I love. That red belly...that's the part I relate with the most...I've been there...I think a _lot_ of us have been there, due to a wide range of problems...and if you're there...please don't slap away the hands that are spending their own strength to reach down the throat of your wolf and pull you back out. And if you have no one reaching down the wolf's throat for you, call for help as loudly as you can, and take whatever hand reaches out to you. And if no one comes...still keep fighting. Maybe someone is coming, but you just don't know it, and when your hand finally exits the wolf's mouth, someone will see it and grab on. But in any case, don't ever give up...don't ever let the wolf win. I've let it win sometimes, but it turns out that letting it win doesn't make it stop. It just feeds it.

This reminds me of the Native American story about how everyone has two wolves inside, eternally fighting. One is all things good - hope, love, faith, generosity, kindness, empathy, and patience. The other is of evil - hate, jealousy, rage, sorrow, selfishness, and guilt. The wolf that wins is the one you feed. When you allow addiction to control your life in an attempt to drown out guilt or loneliness, when you give into anger or jealousy...you feed that evil wolf inside and let it take control. It is essential to have balance and not let the darker side completely consume you. It will always be there, but the good wolf must be fed to hold back the evil wolf.

Since I see people looking for the answers still...here's what I took from it... The wolf represents your problems, The Guy on the bike is running away from his problems, The guy buying the alcohol is an alcoholic spending his last coin on alcohol, and the woman is addicted to cigarettes, the end of theusic video represents that everyone is stronger together and as such you can face your problems together

I've been disappointed for a long time about how most music videos nowadays are just the band playing the song, and at best they might have some interesting set to play on, or cool visuals in the background. I'm glad to see that the value of a truly kickass music video is not lost on everyone

Some can always say "It's just one drink." Some can always say "It's just one smoke." Some can always say "It was just one mistake." One drink can lead to another on a bad day. One smoke can lead to another after your shift. One mistake, one that you don't learn from, will always lead to the same outcome. You may think you can control it, that you can stop whenever you want, but it starts to control you, and then once you try to fight back it will only lash back even harder than before. You can't run from the wolves, no matter how much you think you can. Fighting them is hard, but sometimes you just have to do it.
