Ashkenazy achieves great concentration of feeling in this Fourth and his terracing of dynamic contrasts is caught superbly. There is splendid dramaand intensity throughout in this very impressive performance. One is bowled over at first listening, especially in part 4....

This shymphony has all the greatness of Sibelius soul and also magistrally reveals his inner drama, pain, loneliness and disgregation, especially in the fourth movement.carefully listen at the final crescendo... MASTERPIECE.

Ashkenazy complete cycle has been under rated. His 2nd was brilliant, and hearing this 4th again is turning me back to the others in his cycle for another hearing...

Stunning Ashkenazi version, perhave same level with Karajan. Thank to Finland misterius foggy landscape as a visual background.

This recording does capture the personal struggle involved in this piece. It's like extracts from a diary at a difficult time. Sibelius is so oblivious to his audience here. I can hear him saying "You lot won't understand this piece. Sorry about that but I had other things on my mind."

This, Symphony 7, and his Violin Concerto are his three greatest works. 21:42 one of the greatest crescendos of all time.

The older I get, the more this symphony grows on me. It always warrants, and rewards, a very careful listening.

It's really the psychoanalitic symphony of my favourite brilliant composer, it leads us the deepest part of the human soul. And the performance is wonderdul. Great Sibelius, great Ashkenazy!

It's a great work by Sibelius, but I always find this depressing to listen to (and it's meant to be). The end of the last movement reminds me of a dying bird. And then it just ends. Without meaning. Like real life. Vicious real life.
