The Bard is notable for being one of the shortest, as well as one of the most evocative of all Sibelius' tone poems. The striking atmosphere of this piece is achieved with elegiac harp solos on top of a rather minimalist orchestration, showcasing Sibelius' mastery of orchestral color and mood.
Petri Sakari and his Icelandic forces deliver one of the finest recordings of this elusive work. The final climax is especially chilling.
