"The Swan of Tuonela"
2nd movement from "Four Legends from the Kalevala"
Orchestre de la Suisse Romande - Horst Stein
(Dedicated to Theodor W. Adorno, whose narrow minded, fascist and German-centered theories on "musical sociology" and numerous insults about Sibelius's music didn't prevent the value of this Finnish artist from being appreciated everywhere in the world!)

A while back, CBC's Peter Gzowski's radio voice was as comforting as the most priceless, down-filled feathered pillow, that is resting on a bed made of chocolate truffles. It was about 7 or 8 pm. Pitch wintry black outside... even the trees where shivering... then Peter's voice filled my little parking booth with a description of this Finnish folk tale, to which he concluded by setting Sibelius' song free. I was pretty much in "7th heaven" from this.

Tuonelan tytti (Maid of Death) by Vertti Teräsvuori (1997). Teräsvuori is a photographic artist, nd so this is not a painting but a photograph - hard to believe at first sight!

Tuonela = Manala = Hell/Heaven (the place where you go after you die) In ancient Finland they didn't separate heaven/hell.

Beautiful. I agree. Heaven or hell depending on one's spiritual journey.

Who does it to day, I think, sometimes to day, that the earth is the hell, and the heaven is when you are free for everything, there is no fier, no had, no problems, you just exist, or who knows, but, I think.. vi just don't exist, just like vi did'nt exist befor our birth. I think, that, we people are only very skaery to die, and that's why I'm wondering, why are we killing each other.

Nyt alkaa tämä pian menemään musiikin suhteenkin hieman vihapuheeseen, että täytyy ilmeisesti lopettaa... Voikaa hyvin! Thank You too much.

Compelling because as I listen to the music, and look at it with a loose rather than intent gaze, I get the real sense that there is rippling of the waters. A sort of visual trick, or mental artifact. Watched the video again, paying close attention to whether there was any panning or zooming in and out that was causing this perception. Finding none, I have to assume that the combination of the photo and music have 'moved' me. Or at least my sense of reality for 7 minutes and 24 seconds.

I don't know that any other instrument could have played it with such longing and grief. This was obviously the right choice, but I would love to hear it done by the French Horn too.

This looks surprisingly like the Kay Nielsen visualization of the Swan, designed for Disney's Fantasia. It was dropped, along with Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, because of the war, when Finland was technically enemy, but it's been reconstructed from the original designs. Looks good, too, though it's not exactly the Finnish myth version. Agree about Adorno, by the way -- you don't have to be a Nazi to be a cultural Boche. Unfortunately, and despite efforts of Karajan and a few others, you still get that view in Germany today. Also France, sadly.
