In Sicario 2: Soldado, the drug war on the US - Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) reteams with the mercurial Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro).

There should be a third. The operation led by Josh Brolin is brought before a Congressional hearing as in the War on Drugs by Reagan, Bush and Clinton and all hell breaks lose, particularly for B. del Toro. In question is whether it was a success or were the Mexicans just corrupt? It should also shed light on the unofficial US-Mexico relationship.

Oh, so he is on board; good. Seeing how much this trailer zeroed in on the shoot-em-up stuff, I was worried that Sony execs smelled money and were just churning out a sequel... But with Sheridan attached, I feel better. His screenwriting career has been stellar imho- Plus, the fact that he basically strong-armed Wind River away from The Weinstein Co. after Harvey's piggish, despicable actions came to light only makes me respect him more. 🤙

I don't want to jinx it, but yeah. I was thinking about Sicario recently and it's one of those movies I fondly remember as a classic. I was one of the lucky few that did catch the film in theatres, and to be honest, nothing else felt like it at the time. It was like an art house film with a larger budget and stellar production that elevated this film to another level. It's by no means a perfect film, but it felt like seeing Star Wars in 1977, whereas The Force Awakens felt like watching Star Wars for the 100th time in 2015-17.

Im excited, but also a little worried. The first movie was a very dark, gritty exploration of justice and a brilliant character study. This looks more like just another action movie. But I guess we’ll see!

Nicholas Vittorio I think this one going to explore a wider universe of the cartel world and it's rivalries between them and our guys going to make them fight each other while slaughter the remaining survivors when the dust settle down, and yeah... it's going to be more political where many bodies from Pentagon, Capitol Hill, Langley, Oval building, J.E Hoover building, Fort Meade want to get their hands in and the rivalries.

I agree. The first one is excellent as a standalone film. That said, I'm still excited for Soldado because it's written again by Taylor Sheridan and is directed by a mature and talented director who's familiar with this kind of gritty mob warfare. It doesn't actually look like it's the same kind of film either, which is another plus in my opinion. The trailer plays more like an action film like John Wick than a taught thriller like Collateral or Sicario.

Daniel West idk though cause the first one was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who makes nothing but masterpieces (like sicario), and the fact he’s not back directing the second one scares me a little bit. Plus the story doesn’t make sense to continue considering (SPOILER ALERT) Alejandro, Benicio del Toro’s character, killed who was responsible for his family’s murder which is why he was apart of it in the first place

Yeah, the character of Alejandro was fascinating and I'd love to see more of his backstory. As to why Villeneuve isn't directing, I'd imagine it's not because he didn't feel the script was worth it. I imagine it's so he could helm Bladerunner, which is a dream come true. And the funny thing about it is, Ridley Scott gave the direction to Villeneuve who totally nailed his vision for the sequel. If Villeneuve wouldn't do the same for a respected visionary director, he'd be kind of a douche, and from what I've read about him, he's a sound enough chap.

fightinphiIs that’s a really good point actually I didn’t really think about it like that. I think I’m just more upset that denis villeneuve isn’t directing it, cause the thing that made the first movie great was the way he layered suspense with slow build up and the cinematography. From this trailer (which of course isn’t the actual movie so I don’t know for sure) it doesn’t have that same feel as the first.

This looks like it went from a thought provoking film to an action movie sequel. Without Emily Blunt's character, it will be hard to have that emotional center that this film needs. The audience got brought into the world of drug cartels through her character. Brolin and Del Toro's characters worked better as costars. I hope I am wrong, but since Denis Villeneuve isn't directing the sequel I will temper my expectations. He was the main reason the first film was so good.

A lot of people seem worried about this being a shitty action flick but the important thing to keep in mind is that this is written by the same man who wrote the last movie, as well as wind river and hell or high water, and is directed by the man who directed Gomorrah. This will be good, trust me.

yea but he was less annoying and seemed more intriguing than the female lead. from what i recall of the first movie, she was absolutely boring. brolin and del toro made that movie for me. im not mad they focused on them for the sequel

If you can ever find it, there was an old show called The Pretender that he was in. I can't remember when he came into the show, but it was pretty good, and worth watching if you need something to burn time.

Worried about this one. The first movie was a slow-burn drama which pretty explicitly communicated that there were no real "good guys", and anybody who tried to be one was likely to get themselves killed and forgotten. This looks like a pretty standard action-thriller without the ethical ambiguity of the original.

Yeah, I'm with you here Eoin. Taylor Sheridan returning to write is the only thing I'm optimistic about here. The first one was a great film - it struck me as a modern Chinatown by way of Traffic, but simply not the genre of film I'd really care to see a sequel for, so hoping this thing doesn't muddy the reputation of the first.

Benicio Del Toro did a great job in Sicario. Alejandro was such a compelling character. I'm still sad they couldn't get Denis Villeneuve back to direct or get Roger Deakins for the cinematography. Emily Blunt will be a miss too, but we've still got Taylor Sheridan returning as writer so that's great. Definitely looking forward to this.
