Maria Theresia von Paradis: Sicilienne for Violin and Piano in E flat major
This music is written by the female composer Maria Theresia von Paradis (1759-1824). She was an Austrian pianist, singer, composer and pedagogue. When Maria was three years old she became blind for the rest of her life. Still this didn't keep her of writing her own music and play concerts. She even played in front of the French royal couple Ludwig XVI. and Marie Antoinette as well as in front of Georg III., king of England, and his wife Charlotte. Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn knew her and she also played their works on her tour through Europe.
Sicilienne is a very calm and peaceful song that is perfect for studying and concentration, stress relief and sleep. :)
violin, direction, sound: Katerina Chatzinikolau
piano: Ani Ter-Martirosyan
Camera & Postproduction: 2917.design - Kai-Uwe Hella
Makeup & Styling: Maria Nikolic
Location: Gelbe Villa
Special thanks: Atelier für Geigenbau Lemke and C. Nell for the kind loan of the violin made by Nicola Gagliano (1737) & Ministerium für Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen

I'm told this composer's works are not so well known compared to Mozart, Hayden and all the boys. Is this simply because she's a woman? What wonderful music, what a sin to pass it over because of bias.
@amj.composer
@amj.composer 9 месяцев назад
That's quite possible. I had the privilege of studying pieces by women composers throughout college and always thought this to myself. Why weren't they famous? A lot of the pieces by women were very unconventional and "brave" for the lack of a better term. I can't help but think that if a man would've written such a piece, they would be considered "ahead of their time" or "unconcerned with the canon" whereas the women composers were simply seen as people who didn't understand the canon or couldn't keep up with the times. Kind of sad to think about, but I have recently seen a terrific amount of woman representation in western music and that's awesome. (My experience is mainly in Solo piano, concert band, and handbell choir, I can't speak much for strings and orchestra).

I love everything about this! Your dresses, the location, and of course your exquisite violin playing. I’m learning this piece and I’m trying to figure out the shifting. How long have you been playing and how long did it take you to learn this piece in particular?
@KaterinaChatzinikolau
@KaterinaChatzinikolau 3 года назад
Thank you so much for your appreciation! I learned the Sicilienne the first time when I was a child. To learn the notes it didn’t take me much time but in order to find the right sound colours and to create the right phrasing it is a never-ending work. The shiftings at the right places, the fingerings and the bow control are key elements for mastering especially a slow piece. I hope the video inspired you to play this piece, too :)

@@KaterinaChatzinikolau Thank you for your reply. You definitely inspired me. I am learning by watching your fingerings and Ivry’s and Pinchas Zukerman. It’s nice you have been learning since you were a child. I began as an adult and I absolutely love violin!

Maria Theresia von Paradis did not compose this piece of music whose melody and harmony are clearly not from a person who was born in 1759 and died in 1824. It is well known that it is a fake created some time in the 20th Century by Samuel Douchkine (1891-1976) who claimed to have discovered it and who was inspired by a theme from the violin sonata (opus 10 no. 1) by Carl Maria von Weber. Of course this has nothing to do with the beautiful rendition of Katerina Chatzinikolau. Thank you for sharing.
