Delbert Walsh Yes, one way streets :-) We weren't driving. I was on a tour package and Sicily has a car club which can be hired to do specific tours such as this. They picked us up at our hotel in Ragusa and drove us to Modica where they dropped us off for dinner - our tour bus later picked us up and returned us to our hotel. I think the drivers probably do this tour several times a week so they know every turn and twist the whole way, and I imagine the residents know when to keep off the streets and out of the way!
There are some two-way streets in Sicily where cars going one way wait at a wider portion while cars going to the other way pass. Then they give a quick beep of the horn and enter the bottleneck.
