As a german i would like to thank southgate and deschamps for their inspiring fluent and aggressive football. Really nice of them to give other nations a chance.
@@ivandankob7112 cos Individual class got them there. I think both southgate and deschamps are good at managing the dressing room but in terms of their footballing philosophy they are sub par.
The thing is, as a Frenchman, we got the same problem with Didier Deschamps with a very pragmatic approach to the game of football. The other side of the coin is the results: 2016 Finalists 2018 World Cup Winner and 2022 World Cup Finalist, and we nearly won the bloody thing despite being ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED DURING 80 (FKN) MINUTES... in 202Ø-1 When we were eliminated by switzerland, everyone in france, pundits, journalists, even in social media, went on Deschamps' throat and begging for his sacking to replace with Zinedine Zidane... despite being victorious on the last 2 international tournaments (yes, I include the Nations League) so I can understand the Gareth Southgate problem in England...
I defended Southgate for quite a while but damn that is some of the worst, most uninspiring football I’ve ever seen. What the hell is going on with this team the tactics and cohesion are just not there we are really going to go out at the QF again. Whyyyyyyy????😢😢😢
Same here, I understand why he played the way he did a few years back as I felt like the team wasn’t all that great. Now it’s becoming a joke and holding the squad back for me
Irishman here. The style of play England are playing is how WE should be playing. It’s the way underdogs should play. If Ireland was playing Slovenia or Serbia and went 1-0 up, it would make sense for us to then sit back because we’re trying to maximise every result we can get. But England is completely different. The team England are able to field is an incredible one. Your starting XI is genuinely one of the best I’ve ever and anyone else has ever seen on paper. It’s out of this world with talent. A team like this should be let loose. Don’t settle for 1-0. Go and get another. This is the kind of team that needs to be pushed and set free in terms of style. (Side note: I am still Irish so it’s been great seeing England play like this and I genuinely hope it continues for the next 100 years until I’m dead) 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
England keep reinforcing the phrase “it’s the hope that kills you” because every single hopeful English fan get their dreams crushed consistently because of southgate’s incompetence. England should be better than this but unfortunately they have a League 1 or Championship level manager ruining all their amazing talent which should’ve absolutely been dominating football along with France for a while now
@@Vizeh good guy boohoo , he was a useless tool when he fucked up in 96 and he has gotten worse since. You have the most incompetent manager not only at the Euros but in every top 3 league on the Planet. He would get Real Madrid relegated for christs sake! Even Georgia has a Willy Sagnol, who by just being french tops everything you have to offer in terms of football management. When Eddie Howe is the only englishman who deserves a top flight Job, you are done mate. Always have been always will be. Why? Because everything good about "english" football comes from foreighners. Pep, Klopp, Arteta Emery. Your best players dont even play there anymore. You are by FAR the most arrogant footballing nation on the planet yet you never achieve anything! 66. Is this a joke? Im german born in 81, care to count how much silverware i witnessed personally in my lifetime? We have been shit for some years yet our last title was "only" 10 years ago. Maybe a very smart guy like you might see a pattern here. So please keep Southgate as long as possible its really fun from the outside. But even without him, you will never get anything, because of your disgusting blood money league that leaves your national Team with NOTHING! Foden is nothing without Pep holding his hand and i could make a list for days. But of course nothing like this would be happening if you had Calvin Phillips....😆😆😆 does he listen to himself? Love the Channel btw but that had to be said
Frankly, that's insulting to League 1 and Championship managers! There's actually some pretty decent managers down there! Southgate would look out of his depth even down in the Isthmian League though!
That's it then. I don't understand why the England fans keep believing in title hopes that are unlikely to materialise. Nearly 60 years and counting during which England have never been good enough and there's been 3-4 better teams at least in every tournament. Why do you folks keep believing?
I'm Italian and I'd give anything for 🇮🇹 to have someone like Cole Palmer or Ivan Toney our lack of an offensive threat is embarrassing yes we have Chiesa but he's a not a goal scorer he's a creative player and Scamacca is USELESS yet 🏴 have this wealth of offensive fire power on the field and the bench yet when they score Southgate sits back like he has prime Maldini Cannavaro Baresi or Bonucci and Chiellini back there its really mind boggling
I remember when Belgium were first starting to show signs of their golden generation losing their edge, Roberto Martinez played in a way that compensated their weaknesses instead of capitalizing on their strengths, because the weaknesses were more pressing than the strengths were strong. Southgate's doing the same thing, but the strengths here are really fuckin' strong. You've got a young team and you don't press, probably the best attack in international football and you're playing in such a pessimistic cautious manner, a defense that let's face it, isn't exactly world class, and you're playing uber-defensive football, one of the best right backs in the world playing in defensive midfield, one of the best 10s in the world playing on the wing, and 3 of the best players in the prem this season making cameo appearances like Ryan Reynolds in that Fast and Furious movie. His strategy is anti-everything England's team is good at, that's why they suck.
My game plan would be to play two up top. Basically a 4-1-2-1-2. A glorified 4-4-2. The defence is doing fine. Trippier is the only weak link because he is out of position because we took one left back. CDM: Rice with Mainoo as the sub replacement. Wharton third choice. left; Gordon with Eze as sub option, Right: Saka with Palmer as sub option. Bellingham behind the strikers free role box to box. Double pivot off the ball, behind the strikers with it. Foden can be the second choice (he has gone home for his kid, so he might be out now). Kane and Watkins up front, together. Kane works well in partnerships. Especially a fast counter part like his time with Son. Watkins can be the leg man. Kane likes to drop deep he can feed Watkins, While Watkins can create space for Kane. Toney as Kane's sub after 60-70 minutes. Bowen can be Watkins under study. That's my smooth brain, no coaching badge opinion.
There’s no way on earth that wouldn’t be much much better than current tactics. I honestly think you could get your average high level England fan (who thinks about tactics, lineups, watches lots of football content) and give them the job tomorrow and 90% of them would do better than Southgate.
This is the reason i love Bielsa. Despite the little defending in his game, the all out attacking style would always be entertaining. Even if leeds lost, I could still say I enjoyed the game, and on their day, Leeds could've beaten anyone, I mean they beat man city away with 10 men. If England signed bielsa and we still didn't win anything, I would still love to watch them, because they would be such a joy to watch.
Same. I’d rather they didn’t go as far as the finals but we actually got to see what the players could do. We haven’t really seen anything, nothing to give us hope.
I said it after the last euros final: England hit their ceiling under southgate then and there. If they were serious about winning things they needed to move on. Of course, I was met with "but he's done way better than previous england managers! He doesn't deserve to be sacked!" When I asked them if they honestly thought Southgate could take that team further, they just deflected to "well what was their ceiling under previous managers??"
Tbh... I think Southgate's been very lucky with the teams he's faced in comparison to our other managers. If Sven-Göran Eriksson had the run that Southgate had during the 2020/21 euros and the 2018 world cup. He'd have won them imo (or at least lost to France in the final instead of going out to Croatia).
@@doodlebug4360 this. Under southgate It's the same story every tournament. They beat weak teams and then lose to the first strong opposition they face, and now they can't even beat the weak teams anymore.
They played a good semi vs the Dutch. If it was Italy, Southgate would be considered a genius for getting to the final today. I will root for Spain, their football is much better.
People saying it hasn't aged well because they played well for 30 mins against the Netherlands. England should have walked this tournament with the amount of quality players they have yet they were 30 seconds away from going out to Slovakia, and got a dodgy pen V the Netherlands. Spain beat Germany, France and England playing positive possession based football.
Shoehorning players to fit into a system and playing them out of positions is what England do. It’s Scholes at left wing all over again. It’s a double edge sword for Southgate because what he really needs to do is drop one of either Foden or Saka to allow Gordon to play a natural winger on the left. Then we need to have the conversation regarding Bellingham and how he basically operates in the same exact area as Kane. I’m not English so I don’t have a horse in this race. But what I see England as is a mess of players out of position and southgate has very little clue as to how to put all the pieces in place. You’re playing a RB at LB despite the system reviving around wide players crossing and playing around with each other. You’re playing a RB at CM when the RB wants to push wider and interact with the wide players. You’re playing a natural 10 or RW hybrid at LW. And you’re giving Bellingham and Kane the exact same position to operate in. It’s a complete mess and it shows on the pitch.
The biggest thing that gets me with all this is how nobody is talking about the players coming out after the Denmark game saying that they weren't playing the way Gareth wanted them to. That just sounds like he has lost the dressing room and the players don't understand/want to play to his tactics
I thought that the last Euros and World Cup we were a bit unlucky but with how he's disrespected young talents like Wharton Palmer and Mainoo and saying that they don't have a replacement for Kalvin Phillips. If England wins it will be because of the players who deserved it not the manager.
We basically had a home tournament in 2021 and failed to win against an ageing Italy team. I still find it hilarious how as a nation we let that slide. Southgate should have been forced out that same night.
As a Dane, the only game of our three draws I was satisfied with was the one against England, because it was the only one where I felt like the team tried for the full game (unlike Slovenia where we pissed away the game, and Serbia where we also fell off at the end). It's frustrating to see a team that you know can do more sit back instead.
The problem with Southgate is he has no motive to win or take risks to do well. This is the best job he will ever have. He will never manage in the premiership or any big league. No one would have him at a top 4 club around Europe, so he has no motive to use any risky or attacking tactics. If he loses a game 0-3 or more he will never work again. Its safer for him to just tell every one to stay back and we take our chances here and there. Put Klopp, Arteta, Pep, Ancelotti etc in charge of this team at the start of this tournament and England would be scoring 2 or 3 a game. Why does he get a pass? Even Mourinho would have this team playing better than present. This group of players could easily handle a high line and focus on the attackers staying high and in the opponent box. You have one of the fastest full backs in world football and your telling him to sit on 30 depth stay back don't overlap tactics. Mind numbing. I honestly think Jude Bellingham has more football IQ than the manager
If England win the Euros its despite of Southgate not because. Their squad is probably the most complete of any of the tournament participants having finally developed some genuine midfield talent. The fact that they barely look like a threat going forward is honestly impressive.
----Pickford---- Walker Stones Guehi --Rice Mainoo --- -Foden Bellingham- Saka -----Gordon ----Palmer----- We need to change up the way we play and actually try and attack with players who can run instead of players who try to play left back after scoring and stop playing backwards and so deep
He's a lovely man, he speaks very well and I admire how well he treats his players on a personal level. He'd be good to have in a coaching set-up as a spokesperson and a big brother figure to the players, but he's definitely not a manager.
My argument at the minute is who are we going to replace Southgate with? We all want Pep and Eddie Howe but the Fa are probably going to look at Michael Beale or Liam Rosenior. They got lucky with Southgate cause Sam Allerdyce couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
I’m not English but as an American I can relate with your in terms our national team manager. We don’t play to the sum of parts and it’s a waste given the talent we have. Berharlter is tactically stunted. I write this at halftime between USxPanama Copa America. Keep up the excellent work. You’re one of my favorite football content creators.
To be honest the England performances remind me of the dark days of 2008-2016. Great players on paper but the manager ruins it all with bad player selection and tactics
Never really got the level of the hate for Southgate before 2024 because realistically he got our best results in recent years. But he’s levelled up recently, and is genuinely the worst manager I’ve ever seen. I fell asleep during the match on Tuesday. I was on a bench in a park
The thing is England could still stumble over the line and still win the tournament .. I don’t think it will be down due to Southgate but the players are there to do it ..
As a Man United fan, I don't know how we were linked to this guy, I do not rate him at all. He literally has one of the best squad, and if he doesn't win the euros, it's a shambles.
0:44 Excuse me, what? That is kinda the most popular opinion in these Euros. Everbody is sick of Southgate. Fans are sick, players are sick, whole Europe is sick.
The only time England looked a threat against Slovakia was when Mainoo decided to say fuck the script and play direct, and Rice having a go from outside the box.
On the bright side, I haven't seen any cars with those stupid little flags sticking out of their windows this tournament. I think we've finally collectively given up.
As a german i can just imagine how depressed some english fans here feel about their team. Imagine spending a lot of money to see your national team in another country just for them to play like a team of 60-year-olds.
coming from an Italian, if we meet in the quarterfinals (big if, we're in a big identity crisis ourselves) it is going to be the biggest battle of mid history has ever witnessed lol, England has an extremely talented team but Southgate has blood on his hands
You’re all crazy Southgate is a genius, he’s got us into the easy side of the draw again while only conceding a 0.1% worldie and somehow resting the players while playing them by telling them not to chase the game and play relentless low tempo. Man’s playing 4D chess while everyone else is playing snakes and ladders
Southgates strengths were cohesion and using the players that fit his system why guys like Sterling who stretched the field for Kane would always play and Maquire is a competent defender in a back 3. But everyone was pressuring Southgate to take inform player's and use Foden use Trent and it's not working. He should stuck to his guns, It's a ridged system and Deschamp isn't some genius either he's pretty ridged which is why when Portgual played the counter attacking role France was uncomfortable and lost the final.
Hey says he doesn't listen to the media, but he really needs to, then he would know what team and formation to play. Everyone knows what to play except him, he's in an echo chamber on his own.
You can see it when they come out and for the second half there is no character in them they look like zombies shuffling out deflated. This is the managers fault how can you have that guy inspire you and give a fighting talk to his players
*Honestly he redeemed himself for missing that penalty against Germany in Euro 96 by winning a penalty shootout, a knockout game against Germany and a semi final. He’s righted a wrong that’s most likely haunted him for years so at least he can leave with his head held high.*
@@Sortep13 Might be Switzerland and if you watched Switzerland play this tournament, they actually look really fuckin good. I'd honestly rather play Italy
@@Vizeh He did a fair job and so did the FA of a complete rebuild but this is one tournament too many for him. People who backed him like Henderson are not there so i dont think the players respect him as much.
As a Romanian, my main concern for the English National Team is how they're wasting their golden generation with this style of play. Going conservative against Serbia or Slovenia isn't going to win you the tournament, And the mentality of defence wins games isn't wrong but isn't right either, if you're a top national team with all kinds of players, I'm sure you can control the game by keeping possession and having a really good attack. And if Southgate doesn't realise this, imagine the horror against bigger national teams like Germany who if they score, won't stop attacking. All the best though at the Euros
@real_overtale I saw them against us in the World Cup Qualifiers, we took the lead in Hamburg 0-1 but the moment Germany equalised in the second half, they became more and more aggressive and scored from a practiced set piece in training (For context: Talking about the Germany 2-1 Romania match in the WC Qualifiers). It's a part of their football, once they score, they won't stop and it proves especially in the 7-1 game against Brazil too.
Football is a game of momentum, once you have, you never want to lose it. You lose it, you're screwed. England lose the momentum by going defensive for no reason due to Southgate.@@ptopds
As someone not English, the England national team are absolutely dreadful. It is genuinely shocking how bad you are. Why Southgate has stayed manager for 8 years is beyond me.
They were dreadful even before that. Try to watch any games from the Roy Hodgson era, the Fabio Capello one, the McClaren one and the final years of Eriksson, and you understand what England are all about: stodgy, unwatchable football in which defenders and defensive midfielders pass the ball amongst themselves. Then the Premier League starts and everybody forgets about those issues. It's not that I rate Southgate at all but this is the history of England over 18+ years. It's about time they start asking themselves the right questions about the sort of footballers they produce.
I knew he wasn’t good enough since the Croatia game. The man had the easiest routes to finals that I’ve ever seen in over 30 years of watching football. He’s beyond predictable and England have no chance of winning a competition with him in charge.
i think saying that at the time is harsh considering england hadn’t won a knockout game in 12 years and crashed out to iceland two years earlier just coz southgate is doing a shit job now let’s not rewrite history
@@esseffseei personally gave him a pass then but I also didn’t give him any particular credit for beating Columbia and Sweden. Even the teams of the 2010s would’ve reached that semi final precisely because of who we played. Never mind the golden generation. I soured on him mid 2019 when I realised that he actually played tournament football in friendlies because he has no idea how to coach attacking output and our big wins in friendlies were only achieved because England faced terrible sides like San Marino and Malta.
@@karmaascendant3936i do agree us beating colombia and sweden is nothing to write home about but we can’t say england team could do that after what euro 2016 served up 😭
Southgate is spineless and too afraid to make changes. Before the Slovenia game, Goldbridge said "I guarantee you, he won't change the team except he will take out TAA and put Gallagher in" and look what happened.
Some argue England made it to the semis and final under Southgate so he is a good manager. But I think if it were another manager who was better than Southgate we would have won these tournaments. The footballers and fans are so good they deserve a better England manager.
It’s funny how southgate costed england the euros as a player and as a manager. 1996, the only player who missed the penalty in the shootout vs Germany in the semi final and does it again against Italy in 2021 as a manager
@@esseffseecommon misconception mate, Southgate banged his old 96 kit on and his old battered umbros and missed. Saka getting it in the media was just a distraction tactic used by the English media
@@esseffseePutting a teenage Saka on to score the 5th penalty as well as other young players like rashford and sancho was a major tactical error from Southgate. Putting players like them under major pressure that they had never faced before was idiotic
The reality of Gareth Southgate is that he has rode his luck massively over the past 6 years, if you go through the World Cup of 2018 & 2022 aswell as Euro 2020 you will see the favourable teams he gets drawn against in group stages and knockout stages. Even with this luck he has struggled to create a team that blows away opponents, scraping by against national teams that aren't exactly world beaters like Ukraine, Senegal, Colombia etc. The fact of the matter is Southgate is below average manager whose luck continues as we get a favourable route once again to the final of Euro 2024, the problem being that when we do meet that big international team hurdle, Southgate is more than likely going to fall at that hurdle once again.
Na fr, we scraped 1st, which was lucky as the result we had, made things out of our control. His tactics are non existent. Sometimes in football you have to take risks, rather then sitting back and absorbing pressure from the opposition. If we took more risks against the Italians in the final, rather than sitting back, I am 99% sure we would have won that match. He is wasting our golden generation. Most of our starting eleven positions are held down by world class players who could easily slot into any team in the world and become a success. I could go on. I’m so fucking sick of excepting this mediocre football. We deserve better. Our golden generation deserve better. Even if by some minor miracle we get to final and lose or win. Southgate needs to go. Fuck the FA and fuck Southgate.
You could technically win the tournament by not scoring and conceiding a single goal, but its those moments where the team actually puts effort in and plays beautiful football that the tournament actually becomes memorable and meaningful
Yep depressing, negative football, odd balance, players out of position, everyone looks knackered as well, no natural left back. So many bad decisions. We have the likes of Rice, Foden, Kane, Bellingham coming off huge huge seasons where they have excelled and we are either playing them out of position where they had that success (Rice and Foden) or in situations that don't really suit them (no runners going past Kane). Whilst other players just seem really restricted, like Stones, one of the best ball playing defenders in the world, who has basically created himself a new role at Man City, who excelled in the last two seasons progressing the ball from defence both with his passing and movement, yet for England I have barely seen him move or pass more than 5 yards. We have gone to an international tournament with a 33 year old solid pro of a right back, doing a job at left back, unbalancing the team, whilst natural and talented left back like Mitchell or Chilwell were left out completely (of a 26 man squad btw, 3 more than most previous tournaments, so we easily could have taken 2 normal left back AND taken Shaw gambling on his fitness). He has played Trent in midfield as this pass into space, big switch, quarter back style player, with no runners in the channels or in behind. So frustrating on so many levels. Also all on the back of what was generally an exciting squad where he ditched old favourites and picked exciting in form talents.
If you want , England could be World Champion, urgently call "Pepe Guardiola" England has the best players in history, but let's be honest The English team has never stood out abroad, obviously, the local league, the Premier, is the best But now it has been demonstrated that what is missing is to improve the level of English coaches, In fact, the majority of the coaches who stand out in the P.League are foreigners. Something is wrong, I don't understand why the English coaches fail when they train the English team. This is also happening to Brazil, surely the next coach will be a foreigner Excellent video
"The best offence is a good defence" - Sun Tzu. It may work in war, but it doesn't work in football. Especially when you need to score goals to win, and your team is holding hands in their own penalty area.
Imagine both Mourinho and Wenger getting together to call him the new specialist in failure. Gareth will accuse them both of being voyeurs!😂 English will need someone like Guardiola or Klopp to wield them into a great team with that drive and winning mentality. Instead England is being filled with doubters!
