SID CAESAR: Der Flying Ace [FOREIGN DOUBLETALK] (CAESAR'S HOUR - VERY rare sketch)

Sid Caesar: Your Show of Shows / Caesar's Hour / Admiral Broadway Revue

Another of Sid's masterful foreign doubletalk sketches, this one spoofing WWI "German Flying Ace" movies.
NOTE: No date is available for this sketch, which has only been released on very rare out of print VHS/Betamax tapes. My undying gratitude to KJH, the uber-fan of Sid Caesar in Pennsylvania who found these tapes, and allowed me to transfer them digitally so that I could make them available on RU-vid!

Only on a show with talent like Sid Caesar and Carl Reiner, could Howie Morris be regarded as a Third Banana! I agree, he had remarkable range--doctors, best friends, stage managers, you name it, he could play it. He was also the only one of the quartet (I'm including Imogene here) who had formal acting training. He was a drama major at NYU for a time. ---kjh

Talented people create a great show. One of the beauties of “RU-vid” is that the public can create their own tv show, skit,or short funny movie. Sid Caesar was great at whatever he did. Jack Benny, Red Skelton, plus thousands of others can do funny things, you are the artist. The canvas or “Silver Screen” is in front of you. What will you do? To create laughter? Television was invented by Philo Farnsworth in Idaho, on his farm. His intent, Pat Weavers intent was to make the common man into the uncommon man. The airways are in “the public’s trust.” Use common sense to persuade, inform, educate,etc. Help people become their “BETTER SELVES” by helping strangers. The “Today Show” was created to give people something to talk about at the water cooler. Steve Allen could cut up, play the piano, make people laugh, drain off the stress of the day, fall asleep easier.. Make tomorrow your best day ever. . .

I think this is being shown at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in the world war one exhibit near the beginning. I saw a Sid Caesar WWI sketch in there showing on the TV.
@sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
Didn't know about the World War I exhibit at the Air and Space Museum! Do you remember when this was? At one point, they were showing a spoof of "Breaking Through the Sound Barrier" ; Sid and Imogene's version was "Sneaking Through the Sound Barrier." It was very funny, but, alas, is there no longer. Glad you're enjoying the sketches!--kjh

Have you seen the fantastic special on PBS about Sid Ceaser, with tons of footage and interviews and insights with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks? It’s great!! Also, from what I understand, this entire sketch is now available on the (I think 5 disc) dvd set called Sid Caesar - The Works. I’m planning to buy it asap 😌

I appreciate the level of goofiness they put into the introductory crawl, especially in light of the fact that the only ones able to read the thing when the show aired would have been the writers themselves. :D
@sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
I've only just found out recently that this was actually edited down for reruns-- there was more to the opening that was edited out! I have no idea at this point how much else of the sketch was edited down, but I'm still very grateful to be able to see it in any form. [wgw]

Nah, maybe 30%. 30% plain English, 20% English with fake German accent ("Das is nisht rain, das is shpit"), and 20% Gibberish (native to the Gibber peoples).

Why are so many of your shows, especially in the Caesar's Hour playlist Private Videos? we'd really appreciate it if you made them public. thanks you, and good work saving out dear friend Sid Caesar!
@sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
The private videos are just videos that are already uploaded and SCHEDULED to post over the next few weeks. When scheduled videos are included in playlists (which makes life MUCH easier for me in posting the shows and maintaining the playlists), this is how they show up, as "private", because, well, RU-vid is stupid. But rest assured, all those videos are going to be made public over the next few weeks. Thanks for watching! [wgw]

From the primitive look of this kinescope, I would have bet this sketch was from the early days of Your Show of Shows...are you certain this was from the later Caesar's Hour?...secondly, I believe as folks look back so fondly, on both programs, and memories get a bit hazy, the thought is that every skit/sketch/bit was an absolute homerun, as if every skit was equal to the fabled "This is Your Life"...I know that both Sid and Carl Reiner were masters of foreign language double talk and they used it often, but this particular effort (for me at least) falls pretty short...I just didn't find it particularly funny..( I know others will disagree)..but while I was only about 4-10 yrs old during the live showings, I have to think like any other show, there were super highs and mishits...thanks...
@sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
Yes, this is from CH--the quality of the video is because it was taped from Comedy Central. Agree that it wasn't the best. Even that writing staff didn't always bat a thousand. What's amazing about YSOS is how MUCH of it was good. Watch "On the Docks " which was just uploaded. IT is a classic from CH! --kjh

This actually isn't from Comedy Central-- it's from a commercial video tape you sent me, kjh. :) It was just a very low quality tape. This is actually one of three sketches from that single complete episode of CAESAR'S HOUR you found. (If this was from Comedy Central, you'd see a network logo on the screen.) In any event, I agree that of course not every sketch was a home run. It's worth noting the above, though-- that this was simply one of three sketches that was in a single complete episode that happened to end up on a cheapo VHS release decades ago. This wasn't a sketch that was singled out and repackaged in, e.g., "Best of" home video releases, or-- as far as I know-- the Comedy Central reruns. In any event, I still find the doubletalk itself masterful, even in a lesser sketch. I think the real problem here is the length-- if this were trimmed down by at least 25%, I think it would have been much stronger.
@sidcaesaryourshowofshowsca2250
wgw is absolutely right--this isn't from Comedy Central. I had "On The Docks" on my brain. 🙂

While it may not have been the best writing for this team, there are still an awful lot of good laughs. I was unlucky enough to have to sit through an hour of "Two Broke Girls" at a friends house this Friday and I think there are more honest laughs in this 20 minute video than there could possibly be in an entire season of that...thing.
@daniellack3559

kjh...you are absolutely correct about just how much of YSOS was good/great..but as you point out, even with a murders row hall of fame writing staff which Sid had, the incredible pressure of coming up with the long ball week after week 39 times/season, made it an inhuman/impossible task, to think there was going to be academy award material every step of the way...as for me, I defy anyone to watch Al Dunfy being dragged on stage for the This Is Your Life take off, with Uncle Goopy draped all over Sid, and not laugh till you cry!! :)
