There’s just something about some plain white rice with a saucy protein like beef and broccoli, generals chicken, teriyaki chicken, etc, when it’s paired with plain white rice to cut down some of the overly salty and sugary taste a little bit because dishes like that come with such a concentrated sauce that it makes it taste really salty and sweet. If you were just going to eat the rice with nothing else, then yeah, plain white rice isn’t all that great, but paired with saucy food, it’s so damn good plain.

Pearl onions alone are a no go, however with some green beans or sweet young peas and potatoes cooked right with bacon grease and bacon or ham...that's the damn ticket right there.

Understandable about the unseasoned rice but it depends, some rice like sushi rice is meant take the flavor of whatever it is accompanied with so it isn't heavily seasoned. Like rice and gravy you don't really need the rice seasoned because the gravy will do the work.

In a MINOR DEFENSE of rice, it's a vehicle carb. Much like you use biscuits to clean up the bowl after a soup/stew, rice is made to have sauce put on top of it. To soak up all the goodness. But we Americans treat it as a side and do dumb things with it. When I make rice I use chicken of beef stock instead of straight water, gives it some extra flavor. And use some better instead of oil, blah blah saturated fat if bad for you, etc. But BITCH rice needs something else if you don't plan on dousing it in sauce/gravy, so the little butter will add to it.

Point of Plain rice is to mix it into main, ain't like you'd serve a Cottage or Shepherd's Pie with a side of Rice, Cottage or Shepherd's Pie is a meal in itself, with the meat, and the veggies, and the Mash topping. Plain Rice is more for some kinda Tomato-based dish, or a genuine Indian (or even Chinese) Curry. You mix it in the sauce, it's a good time.
