The Crusaders wrote this song and originally released it in the early 1970's. But in 1976, SideEffect turned this jazz piece into a very dynamic masterpiece with that funky bass line. The chorus was very simple with only one phrase - the title to the song. Then the jazz organ sets the ultimate mood of the song with that gospel feel emancipating the soul from deep within. The trombone follows to end. This piece piece brings you to your knees or have you religiously search for divinity with open arms.

The added "why don't you keep that same old feeling" vocals on this version is such a weird decision, doesn't add anything to the song and actively distracts from it. The trombone solo was good on this version, but so was the original.
This reminds me of my mom and here 1976 4door Buick Electra she had this in her 8 track and us driving down Lake Shore Drive on Saturdays. This song bring back some great memories.

Listening to this takes me back to a time that was so wonderful & simple. I was 14 graduating from 8th grade & ready for Freshman year in High School. I almost want to cry. This song sounds so good. Life was so free. No cares. No worries.

My husband woke up to this song every morning .he claims it got him started to get ready for work.but sometimes he'd have to listen to it just one or two more times and of course show up late for work.Nobody loves this song more than my man.

1976 I was sixteen years old when side effect came out with this song keep that same old feeling. I had the album also. And 2 this very day I love this song by side affect. They sure don't make this kind of music anymore.
I've seen this album go on eBay for more than $50. I waited about a year later (in 2000) and goy it for $12. The best memory is how Side Effect stole the show at the San Diego Sports Arena, in March 1977, from New Birth, The Barkays, and Brick! What a concert!!! I fell in love with Helen Lowe that night!! LOL!!!
I had almost forgotten about this group. I was looking through some vinyl at the Mad Platter a record store that keeps LPs alive here in Riverside California and I ran across this album. Good stuff.

1976 I was 16 years old when that song was out. I loved this masterpiece it's one of a kind the remake from the crusaders. The crusaders also made that song as well. When I first heard this song over the airwaves by side effect now that's something different and new. I even had the album also.
This song was originally released by "The Blackbyrds," but I love "Side Effect," Augie Johnson and the group...a.k. later as The LA Boppers. Nice horn section. Thanks for sharing this rare groove. Love it!
Reginald Butler Wayne Henderson is right, 'Big Daddy' produced Side Effect via At Home Productions and he can be heard playing the trombone on this track! However, Chain Reaction... is wrong. The album this song is originally from is 'Those Southern Nights' by The Crusaders. It is the last album with him as a member alongside Joe S., Stix H., Wilton F., Larry C. & Pops Popwell. (this might have been addressed as I didn't read the entire 180 comments!)
The Crusaders wrote it and released first, but the Side Effects turned it into gospel jazz. The Hammond B3 organ solo was enough to get you on your knees followed by a trombone solo of equal expression. This song was enough to send you to blues and jazz heaven topped off with that gospel feel.
I Love this ole school song's side effect is one my ole school groups and the song keep that same old feeling I love it!!! Back in the day I use to listen to jazz and r and b music. I personally love my ole school jams.
This is the feeling! I saw Augie Johnson's Side Effect @ a Hollywood Sound Studio 2 weeks ago. Augie said he was preparing for a tour. They sound great!!! WoW. They signed a copy of the New Album "It's About Time" for me. Keep that same old feeling...
I remember when I was in high school in the early 70's in Phoenix Arizona when low riders and cruising down Central Ave up to South Moutain and park the hoopdies and pop the 8 track of Side Effect in the ride, watch the honeys cruise up to your car 8 to10 deep . Man what a life we lived.

I'm so honored to have met Augie in Long Beach 3 yrs ago at his favorite eatery. I kept looking at him and was wondering where I've had seen him before... Then it hit me... Hot Damn! Its the singer from Side Effect!!!! I wasnt sure if Cat was his wife-girlfriend, so I approached him. I told him I was such a huge fan. He was completely stunned once I told him I'd loved Side Effect back when I was 11 yrs. old. Mikki Howard was lead singer. My favorites was" I Can't Play" & "Keep That Same Ole Feelings."... Well actually all of them..I bugged Augie about him doing a concerts. Asked for his cd. Augie promised to make me a cd. A day later Cat called. I went to get my cd. I went bragging to all my friends and family. Thanks Augie for treasure memories. God Got You. My deepest condolences to your family and friends. Yolie4gl

Brother you guys are so unsung, the power house vocals of a young mikki Howard, who in my opinion has always been in the same sentence as whitney houston, augies direction and super great musicians...so unsung... this song soeaks volumes of that.

The Jazz Crusaders & later, the Crusaders, were the inspiration for two of the best songs on this album. Which makes The Crusaders a fantastic band, check out ALL their albums Youll come out double buzzing, fantastic stuff. The best fusion band on the planet, for the amount of great songs they made. Wilton Felder & Joe Sample, you wont find two smoother dudes this side of Pluto.
