Known by many names, a side kick to the knee can be a devastating attack against an opponent. This strike can be so effective and cause so much damage that professional martial arts are thinking about banning it from fights.
But in a self-defense situation, throwing a side kick to your opponent's knee could instantly put them on the ground and give you a chance to get away. The main concept is to throw a standard side kick that is aimed right at or slightly above your attacker's knee cap.
These kicks can do a lot of damage especially when an opponent has their weight planted on the leg you hit.

Nice Job fellas. On the angle side kick to the knee I like doing more of a Chasse, lifting my knee higher to get more power, but either way works.

I just got attacked on the subway in Brooklyn 36 st station on Tuesday night by a crazy guy when I stepped in after he threatened to shove a girl onto the subway tracks. When he got in my face, I used this technique to buckle his knee after I jabbed my phone to his throat because he had his throat up close to my hand with my phone. Then I tripped his leg, making him lean back to fall, I extended my arm and slapped his throat to ensure he hits the ground hard and falls. He looked like he was going to put his hand into a pocket after that, so I put my thumbs into his eyes to blind him. I barely had martial arts training and didn't exactly know what to do, and no one helped and just made me more uneasy because I wasn't sure if someone was going to intervene and get me hurt because they don't know what was happening. What do you think I could have done differently to reduce risk of injury for me and for him I guess? I feel like if he was competent, he could have pulled out whatever his weapon was and stabbed me a few times throughout the encounter.

First off thanks for watching and so sorry you went through this. You should start training martial arts with a local school with qualified instructors. Only way to know you have the best chance possible is to train and train often. Constant training in a good curriculum is key to learning and being safe. Stay safe and thanks again.

Anyone who starts a fight with you in fair game. Don't wait to be hit first. If they enter your personal space after taking a short step back, let them have it.

One of the benefits side-kicking the knee is to stop your opponents mobility 👍💪

I just saw this video whilst trying to find out how to defend yourself from a kick to the knee....i have no intention of kicking anyone in the knee, but what if the attacker tried it on the victim?

If my opponent is 6’3 and I’m 5’3, would this truly be effective? Im not talking on the mat or in the ring. I don’t see how it couldn’t, I just don’t know if I’d be tall enough to kick downwards, and I’m not going for the groin unless he has a weapon. I always thought my best bet is to use my speed and wrestling techniques I learned in high school, use them and fight dirty at the same time without using weapons. I know it’s frowned upon but the streets don’t give a damn about you.

This is a great question. And we’ll make a video on height as a variable in combat. We’ll discuss this and other potential issues.

What do you think about sidekicking right below the knee?
@NYMartialArtsAcademy

Right above the knee or directly to the knee does more damage 👍

Do you think this could be considered as one of the best self defence tools?
@NYMartialArtsAcademy
@NYMartialArtsAcademy 2 года назад
Sidekick to knee, Front kick to groin, finger jab and eye gouge (yes they’re different) all great. HOWEVER you need the to have the skill to pull it off. Just like you need the skill to land a jab. Will with no skill = nill.

It is. Farthest range, least commitment. Alot of MMA gyms are the new "Mcdojos" creating false sense of reality about self-defense teaching people how to fight in the ring. Practical self-defense tools: sidekicks, knife training, gun training, throws, grapples, takedown defense.

this is the perfect kick for street fighting. bruce lee actually did it, u can tear someones acl/mcl just by kicking this with shoes on. But i would never use it in sparring.
