This was made for the south African market...and it can be attached with cable ties, done right it can throw a bonito head and an 6 ounce weight but most of us send ours to rod builders who attach it like how the eye would be

I was able to put a 5000 reel on my rod thanks to offset mounting! Thanks for the tip. The bail doesn't hit the cannon anymore. Also, instead of electric tape, I used friction tape. Now it doesn't move, or wiggle, or slide. No movement at all. Very solid.

Very glad to hear that. Thanks for the update.

Good one sir, you were ahead of time ! Greetings from South Africa, now in 2022 - just got a new Horizon Zero rod, it came already mounted with the bionic finger (as it's known in SA) already factory mounted exactly as per your method.

Really? Glad to hear that! My good friend here in Hawaii Mark Gonsalves showed me that simple modification. Thanks for sharing that:)

@@ScubaChris You're welcome ! I'm old school, been using Penn multipliers my whole life, but since these new rods are all made for coffee grinders with braid, I'm having to retrain myself. I'm still working on exactly when to release the trigger when casting.
@ScubaChris

@@maaifoediedelarey4335 As with everything you go by "feel". Start casting short distances then increase your distance slowly.

I'm going to make your suggested change to the mounted position of my Breakaway Cannon. When mounted in the manufacturer's recommended position directly above the reel, I've had a my reel's bail make contact with the cannon's u-shaped line keeper. During reeling, the bail will bounce against the metal line keeper if the trigger is in the closed (pre-release) position. An advantage I can see to mounting the cannon on the side of the rod is it moves the trigger out of the way of the reel's bail. Good idea!

Hi Jeff, I first tried this with my smaller whipping spinners with thin braid about 2yrs ago. Never occurred to me to try it with my larger dunking spinners using braid until i met a angler Mark at a fisherman's meeting last month. After i tried it i think i can cast farther side-mounting the canons. Hard to prove but the line releases "cleaner". Hey, i was hacked several months ago and i had to re-add all my friends. Please accept my request. Thanks Jeff! Chris:)

Great idea I might try this on my latest rod, I have seen people put them on top of the rod

thanks for this tip regarding the canon. will give it a try w the side mount method. By the way was it u who suggested in another video of yours to wind your braid around the canon not once but twice for the extra security of it slipping during the cast?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 7 лет назад
Yes sir. I wrap it 2x when i cast heavy baits, 1x for light plugs. Good luck & thanks for watching my channel!

Instead of the breakaway cannon do you think a glove covering your finger would work? Someone suggested cutting off the finger of a dishglove plus easily slides on and off and is a thick rubber material. The breakaway cannon seems like a good idea and I may try it but just wanted to see if youve ever tried this?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 5 лет назад
I've used finger gloves before, not the same. I've been doing this for so long that braid has never cut me. Yet. With the Cannons i can really put everything into my casts! No more being "careful". Only thing i can say is just try them. I did & have 5 units now.
@randomamerican3287

I use gloves, and am looking to invest in a cannon. The gloves work for me, but I feel that releasing with my finger is imprecise, and it’s hard to find the sweet spot for the line, with my gloves on.

Since the spool moves up and down as you retrieve line, do you want the spool in the all the UP or all the way Down position when you align the cannon knob?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 4 года назад
Good question by the way. It doesn't matter. I found using 50lb braid or lighter may cut you easier to if you use 65lb or heavier you may not need it to prevent braid cuts, but it'll help on your casting distance.
@drkrm
@drkrm 4 года назад
Scuba Chris So, I see these things priced from $10 to $40 from different manufacturers. Is there THAT much difference in the quality of the cheap vs expensive ones?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 4 года назад
@@drkrm All the same. I found a listing on eBay that sells them for $10ea from the UK. It is worth it by the way.

Is this good for casting 8-10oz lead?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 6 лет назад
If you're using braid, yes. Not needed for monofilament. Thanks for watching my channel & good luck!

Do you need a shock line when using the canon?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 6 лет назад
There's no need for one.
@kevinthrift9655

surfboard shack If you mean a leader then yes. Absolutely yes. Good rule of thumb is for each ounce of weight you're throwing you need 10lbs of test weight leader. i.e 4oz=40# test leader.

Would 2 zip ties work to hold the cannon down instead of electrical tape?
@ScubaChris

No, it would still move.

I've attached mine with Zip ties and had no trouble with it. I didn't want to put anything sticky on the finish of my Rod!
@ScubaChris

I understand that , for me using electrical tape is much better then 2 tie-straps. Doesn't move & i put a lot into my casts. I need the canons stationary. Been using them for years like this.
