I am a huge advocate of home made footwear- from sandals to boots and everything in between (more videos about all these subjects are on the way!). In terms of barefoot feel- moccasins are about as good as it gets, lightweight and flexible and providing some protection while still allowing your feet to move naturally and really feel the ground. In this video I walk some folks through making a pattern for my version of a side seam moccasin. This is my favorite style- quick and easy to make, comfortable, uses hide sparingly, and replaceable soles. What's not to like?
Recorded at Saskatoon Circle Ancestral Skills gathering June 2019
PS- this style is geared only toward brain tanned buckskin. Other leathers don't move the same way and wont work for this pattern.

Yes please make more videos on boot and moccasin making. Really interested in water-proof winter boots?

Thank You so much for explaining your version so well! I think it’s a great idea because I never made this type of moccasins due to not being able to use two different weights of leather! This is awesome!

There is a relatively simple way to find a center line of any shape, but it wouldn't work in this case very well because you'd need to cut off the excess material first, so you'd have to use more paper and transcribe the center line. What you do is take your shape and pin a string to an edge with enough excess string on either side that you can hang the shape by it and the other end of the string hangs down making a line through the shape. The line of the string, if everything is able to move freely enough, should split the mass evenly. If you do this more than once using different anchor points for the string the intersections of the lines should actually mark the center of the mass.

Regardless of people’s opinions, nicely done, very helpful, thank you for posting! It was very good and instructive in regards to making a moc!

Not at all - it’s a very poor design and explanation- but that’s the difference between real moccasins and leather shoes -(and they will not wear the same - I can guarantee too you that - everything around her tutorial is TOTALLY INCORRECT-/

A gentleman with the fur trousers looks nice. Probably he wants to say something, but cannot - just dancing with his legs :-)

Definitely so cool. Do you have a publisher lined up? I want a hard copy of your book pretty bad but I can't wait so I'm probably going to spring for the package next payday. P.S. I just finished alone. You were brilliant.

thanks so quinton! and no, i don't have a publisher lined up for it, my plan has always been to self publish.

Hey Woniya, I ordered the part from you of your book on making these mocs. I have a question. Do you add a welt into the side seam?
@BuckskinRevolution
@BuckskinRevolution 5 лет назад
yes, there is a welt in both the side and the heel seams. welts are crucial in moccasins as they are what help the seams stay very tight so the mocs don't fill up with dirt

@@BuckskinRevolution that’s not why you add a welt -- but might be why you don’t cut side seam moccasins to begin with more than once- hmmmm who taught you.?

How can I make suitable turnshoe/moccasin leather, which holds moisture (or is it even possible)? I know, that elk, deer or cattle skin is the best for them, and bark tanning (birch, willow, or spruce) is perhaps somewhat the easiest way to create it. (I know one man, who tans himself with urine, but I don't know how good they are for shoes. He does at least jackets and trousers) After that I believe that stretching is the way (when it is a bit moist), do I have to know something else?

Nope that’s not a side seam moccasin but it’s a good try * please call these the HEELCUPMOC- it’s cuter and truer.
@BuckskinRevolution
@BuckskinRevolution 4 года назад
this is my own modification to a traditional side seam pattern. Instead of a one piece pattern folded along one side, I cut the pattern where the fold would be, then I have two pieces and can cut the sole piece from the thickest toughest part of hide, plus I can easily replace the sole piece when it wears out. In my teaching and my book I refer to it as a "modified side seam moccasin" but that seemed a little technical for the general youtube audience.

Buckskin Revolution the whole point is it’s not a side seam moccasin design which TRADITIONALLY DOES NOT HAVE AN EXTRA CUT- I learned from an Elder-it’s very particular and no need for people to confuse an indigenous art form for one that’s made up and is definitely your own interpretation-
@oliviahart7983

ITS HARDER BUT SUPPOSED TO BE ONLY ONE PIECE- period. It’s no longer a “side seam” moc.
