The overhand setup may also work with a front push/snap kick, chasse frontal or lead teep. Its basically a nice "feint" with many options.

People who say sidekicks don't work just don't know how to throw one. Seen a sanda guy kick someone in the streets using sidekicks got me into kickboxing. That kick was probably the most powerful kick I've ever seen.

Everything thats survived new world martial arts has its place. Would i personally side kick in street? If i had to force distance, yes, otherwise my round house and teep is far better and id rather throw a kick i (personally) know i can finish from (liver round house, kick out their legs to G&P). But to say it wouldn't work would be absurd especially seeing how good people can side kick such a Stephen thompson

Side kicks do a lot more damage than roundhouses and teeps. The side kick is probably the second most powerful attack the human body can do, first being the back kick, but in my opinion side kicks are more practical for fighting than back kicks.

I always started ALL street fights with side kicks. Most time it only took one to put them down and they stayed down for minutes. They power comes frome the ground then to the hip. It takes tons of practice and sparring to develope properly. Still my number one go to kick for all combat.

For a practiced fighter, the side blade kick is an excellent counter for a punch. You get to sway back away from your opponent's fist, and you can deliver a counter strike with the combined force of their punch and your kick into the side of their rib cage.

Besides the special flexibilty, I find it really difficult to kick sideways, when you are used to more square forward stances, like in Muay Thai or Kyokushin. You know, to make the Kneestrikes frontkicks, roundkicks and fists best working with both sides, this sacrifices the intense training of "sidewards movement" and "sidewards tactical thinking". I don't think I will ever bei good in this "sidewinder stuff", but I am pretty impressed and fascinated how you use it.

Sidekick is one of my most used kicks. They defently do work in a street fight for self defense. Also most people expect you to throw a roundhouse kick nobody ever ready to defend against a sidekick

(this story relates to the turning for the side kick/ back kick) I have practiced Martial arts all my life but took a brief hiatus to learn how to breakdance for a while. I was on a scholarship at a dance studio for Hip Hop and it was mandatory to take other styles, so I also took Ballet. Unknown to me until a year after I practiced dance, when I finally went back to martial arts the ballet classes increased the potency of my spinning back kick 2 fold. I was so surprised at myself. The training to learn how to turn in ballet helped me transfer energy through my kick immensely. Learn how to turn and your side kicks/ back kicks will be more deadly!

@@SenseiSeth I'll have to watch some of your videos for better technique I'm sure. I love them but I have a tendency to aim with the ball of my foot instead of the heel and I end up hurting my toes a lot.

@@Mharriscreations Try doing them really slowly and pay attention to your foot position, you should almost feel like you're pulling your toes back a bit while extending your heel outward. Once you're able to get that positioning right consistently, then move on to trying it on a bag.

One of the best parts of side and back kicks is they give you an attack off your center line that doesn’t involve changing your stance or position. If someone cuts an angle to your outside you can easily throw a sidekick at them without any real setup.

Sidekicks work perfectly for keeping drunk douches away from you when they wany to fight...but it's without hurting them too much. Just makes them sit on their ass real fast. It's almost sad how easy it is.

The only time I have used jump kicks whether jump spinning back kick, jump side kick, jump front kick, etc. is when I needed to close distance and am moving foreword. Jump kicks do deliver more power but it is because of the added foreword movement so doing them when not advancing or closing a gap really doesn't make sense to me where a standard side kick, spinning back kick, etc. is the best option. I have used a side kick in a street fight two times and both times they were effective.

Switch to strong side forward, then hit them with a lead leg, skip-in side kick. It closes the distance fast, and has tons of momentum behind it. Striking surface could be blade of foot but usually it comes out heel/sole of the foot; especially if you are in the street. Target could be the junk with the heel, but normally I aim for the bladder or a little higher. I used to train it on a heavy bag swinging toward me. I've hit a lot of people sparring with it and they usually have to "take a minute". You can follow with a backfist... I mean a hammer fist to the head. lol. The great thing about a side kick is your head is leaning away from your opponent's fists; a good place to be. Being a vertically challenged person, I like to close the distance with a kick.

Amazing concepts, love your videos, thanks a lot! Although the skipping sidekick and my kung fu training worked for me in a street flight in a movie theater in Mexico City back in 1992. But I have to admit that I worked the guy out first with front kick, and elbow, a knee to the stomach, and then skip side-kicked him trough the emergency door exit, and as he rebounded after hitting a wall gave him another side kick to the chest and then swept him to the floor. Still, you gotta work for it, that’s for sure! All the best and I´ll be on the lookout for more training tips! Be safe and thanks a lo!t🙏

Sidekicks lack power and range? That’s their biggest advantage. They take a bit longer to throw unless you’re using a sideways stance (in which case the front kick takes longer). Anyways good video, If I lived in the states I’d love to collab and spar with both of you :)

The lure of a turning spining sidekick is the easy target.... Mauy Thai predator mode vs Tea Kwon Do/karate. They turn away and you charge in... meeting that instestine moving sidekick. You quickly learn to check the side turnig kick by check kicking at the hip turning -> stopping rotation and disruptiing balance of the kicker. Then things get fun at hand, knee and elbow range.

Set up combo kicks such as front Shin kicks right above the ankle with your boot then throw a quality hard line side or back side kick low line area.. can be effective.. depending on the level of training the defendant had with street self defense.. I love your channel..

My personal solution is (in a right handed stance)switch round kick to the body as they chamber their foot back in or a front kick. Basically pepper tf out of their body with your own kicks. Once their pace slows straight punches and low kicks

Thrusting straight punches and kicks are the hardest to perfect, but science supports them as the most powerful(kinesiology). Like anything, do what makes you happy. The most important punch or kick is the one that gets the job done. I appreciate your point of view.

Have kinda a funny story from back in 1986. I was 19 and did American Kenpo (did Hapkido and then switched to mma after after 3rd UFC-was differnt then). Was sparring with a friend who was much smaller than me me 6'5", 220. Him 5'4" Korean). He decided to pull a flying jump kick to my head and before I could even think I just did a front push kick and caught him in the thigh while he was chambered mid air. He came flying at me in one direction and then BAM! He went flying 7 plus feet back in the opposite direction! Of course I sked if he was ok. And he said yeah while shaking it off. When he stood up he had a size 15 foot print on his thigh just like Bruce Lee's Game of Death! We both had a good laugh 🥋😅!

I love what you said and it is the most important thing I've heard in a long time, You're not the first person I've heard say, you won't be the last. As long as the street fight is deemed mutual combat it Can be legal depending on local laws. Even then it doesn't matter if the prosecutor feels like charging you because the process is the punishment.

Great video, I still have a fucked up rib that protrudes because of a spinning back kick over 20 years ago. Initially the X-ray were negative but doctors said I may of had a hairline fracture the calcified over.

The spinning one i used alot last time i sparred with 2 muay thai guys... They had been practicing muay thai for abot 2 years and did a fee years of taekwondo before... My strategy was to try to stay for as long as possible at side kick distance... Every time they threw a kick of any type i sidekicked at them and if they tried to get closer i tried to do the spinning "retreating" one... It worked for a ehile, then they caught me and i had to change my strategy... It was alot of fun!

I call that kind of side kicking frontal side kick. The kicker is facing the target and the other will turn his side on the target and kick sideways. A side kick is when your side is toward the target and kick sideways from that position.
